Army now targeting little kids

GRADE LEVEL: 2-9

In the News:
The May 2006 issue of COBBLESTONE magazine has been the subject of several recent news reports. The issue, titled U.S. Army: Duty, Honor, Country, discusses the history of the U.S. Army. The magazine's content has sparked a discussion about why the issue was published and whether it is appropriate for children.

America's present political divide and involvement in the Iraq War has unexpectedly made our issue a controversial topic. Despite what one thinks about our current military involvement, we believe it is possible to report about the history of the U.S. Army without delving into the politics surrounding it. Contrary to some reports or interpretations, our issue does not condone or promote war. We do not editorialize history; we simply report facts. We feel we presented an accurate and historical look at the Army.

Is our issue appropriate for children ages 9 to 14? We believe it is. Each month we try to produce an unbiased, thoughtful, content-driven history magazine. We introduce readers to topics, help them to understand them, and hope they are motivated to learn more. While we did not create our Army issue to start a political debate or instigate controversy, we feel our presentation is an ideal catalyst for discussion about the U.S. Army and its role in America today. The issue can be used as a resource for discussing different views on the Army and its many components.

You can see from the top that the magazine is marketed to 2nd graders and above. Usually found right near the Highlights Magazine. Boy things are tough out there for recruiters.

1. I have a nephew in middle school and they have a jr. ROTC program which he
is in. They took them to camp Pendleton a few weeks ago for some camping and training. He has to learn a bunch of military lingo. His parents are fundies. I was at there house and all there except me and my wife were just so trilled about it. I kept thinking that none of them pays much attention to what is going on around them. How could they train their kid to fight in on of the neocon's wars.

2. Next: Bu$h Youth.
The military-service turd will be polished until it is gleaming and ineluctable. The helicopters are sexy, the F-16s are awesome, the tanks are strong, and the battlefield computers are cool. I see this shit pushed every day.

They never talk about Graves Registration, VA rehab programs, or PTSD. They say: "Each month we try to produce an unbiased, thoughtful, content-driven history magazine." Sure. Do they tell the little children about My Lai?

3. Yep. Problems raising your kids? Just give them to Uncle Sam all of you
weak, inept, incompetent, stupid, failed Parents. That's what Army commercials tell us we are.

I witnessed the harvest every spring in high schools I taught in. Have even observed family members brainwashing their kids.

It's sooooooo depressing. We create this world of violence and hate. It is who/what we are.
