DailyKos.com: Al Zawahiri Releases Audiotape; U.S. Media Mum

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/20/15029/4624

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, the media couldn't wait to break out their flashy "breaking news" graphics to cover bin Laden's audiotape, but a new audiotape by Al Qaeda's #2, Al Zawahiri, has gone relatively unnoticed.

This Australian article has the details:

AL-Qaeda's number 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, paid tribute to the Islamist "martyrs" in Afghanistan, in an audiotape posted overnight on an Islamist website purportedly from the target of an air strike last week.

The tape, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, gave no indication of when the recording was made. But the website said it was "a new speech by Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiti, may God protect him".

In an update on the Pakistan strike, Zawahiri's brother-in-law and a "bomb maker" for Al Qaeda were purportedly among the four terrorists killed in the strike. But confusion still surrounds the issue, as that claim is not based on any physical identification of the bodies. The corposes of the 4 terrorists could not be found at the scene. Today, some 8,000 took to the streets in Pakistan in protest of the strike. Protesters chanted "Death to America" and "Jihad is our way."
