THE PERFECT POLITICAL STORM
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 10:10 AM by berni_mccoy
As if things weren't bad enough for the Republicans, they are being setup for one of the worst elections ever to hit the GOP.

Recently, Bush asked the Republicans to focus on THE ECONOMY for their campaigns. That was a major misdirection. Just released is news that will devastate the 3rd quarter GDP numbers for 2006: EXISTING HOME SALES DROP to their lowest in 2.5 years: http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/060823/economy.html?.v=9 Earlier this summer, new home sales and new construction dropped significantly, but for existing home sales to drop is going to be a hurricane of bad news for the economy. This is especially bad news for the government, as the government created their budget last year assuming the GDP for 3rd quarter 2006 would be an increase of 5%.

This will have a significant impact on the GDP since the housing market was the last pillar holding the GDP up besides government spending. With one of the last two pillars taken out, the house comes tumbling down with failing job rates and massive trade deficits. And the government spending pillar won't be maintainable much longer.

So, Republicans, go spin that one. Spinning is all you'll be able to do as your political ship sinks in this perfect storm.

2. I don't think people are likely to believe them when their var. rate
mortgage payments, credit card payments and cost of goods keep going up while their wages stagnate. Foreclosures are at an all time high.

Republicans only hope is that people will be so destitute or so busy working that they won't have time to go vote.

4. Debt consolidation has delayed and masked over the true
state of the economy. When interest rates start to rise, these problems will come back with a vengence.

5. But Rove and the rest know that is NOT the way to win. Fear has worked an
and will continue to work.

Notice all the 911 movies, programs etc. starting to be shown - also OBL biographies. A few little scares and dust-ups here and there will do the trick - plus one mid-sized scare in October to tie up any lose ends. Nobody really hurt - just enough scare to be sure to keep everybody in line and vote for the devil they know - the Republicans.

8. Only a Dem would offer a real solution to the coming housing crisis...
...the government and all lenders would benefit from heading off massive additions to the housing supply because of foreclosures. However, a Republican would not embrace a role for the government to play by putting restraints on foreclosure actions and providing financial incentives not to foreclose. Otherwise, massive additions to the housing supply will depress prices so quickly that equity in homes held by those making their payments on time will disappear virtually overnight.

People don't realize it yet, but it will take a "New Deal" approach to rescue the American people and their economy from the coming financial depression and possible collapse.

sheeple won't believe, compared to how their own household economies are going. It would seem the Rethugs need to fall back on the fear card, but OBL? For real? Isn't this just going to make people wonder why the hell the * admin. hasn't caught the elusive one YET in 5+ years?

On edit: Thanks for the toon, berni!
