Bush on Katrina Anniversary: it's just a date

http://www.whotv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5316302&nav=2HAB

Bush cautions against placing too much importance on Katrina anniversary

WHITE HOUSE Next week marks the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting, but President Bush would prefer Americans not place too much importance on the date.

Bush says a one-year anniversary "is just that," because rebuilding efforts will take "a long time." The president says the date should be marked by remembering that people suffered, and recommitting to helping them.

51. this way he gets to have it both ways (as usual)
ignore it if it reflects poorly on him, but milk it for all it's worth if he feels he can get some advantage!

Who cares if Katrina cost the US more treasure (and possibly more blood) than the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

30. well, speaking of utter failures
it seems that 9/11 can be considered an utter failure--if your thinking about the people they were supposed to be protecting--however, if you think it's a political goldstrike, then I guess it's a political success!!! This administration was in office nine months before 9/11-and, as I remember, Ashcroft was more interested in prostitutes and Chong's bongs!!!! How come the majority of the people in this country do not hold this administration accountable for what happened on that day? How come the people don't question the coincidences of military maneuvers on that day, or changing NORAD protocol in May, or allowing the Bin Ladens and House of Saud families to fly out, while the rest of Americans get the "no fly?" Katrina is the straw that broke the camel's back, for me. I remember e-mailing Sen. Reid, telling him to do something, this is genocide-I'm watching genocide on my television in my own country!!!! Five fekkin days to respond, and I'm not forgetting--neither will I forget the aid by concerned Americans being blocked from entering NOLA, or those who were not allowed out!!! Such atrocities happening in my own damn country!!!!

39. I agree with you 100%
I was nowhere near NOLA and I couldn't sleep for days and spent a lot of that time crying my eyes out. The sight of lethargic babies was too much for me to bear, especially as a mother myself. I think those who aren't paying attention to any of it won't make a peep about it until it's right on their doorstep. They are either too busy just trying to survive day to day or too busy trying to keep up with the joneses. I've also had friends tell me that they just get too mad about it all when they try to keep up with what's going on so they don't. My husband was on the phone calling senators too during Katrina. He also called Hastert's office and used the f-word. The guy he spoke with had the nerve to tell him not to cuss. My husband screamed "people are dying!" We do care and I think that's what makes us (all of us) the good ones.

:hi: Hey, I'm a scorpio rising!!! I'm not forgetting NOLA, or Mississippi, or Alabama--they didn't get as much coverage, but some of those area were also completely obliterated. With NOLA, however, it's the levees and I want to see some action. If other countries can protect their shorelines so can we.

Won't you consider doing just that?

They cleaned up NYC and shipped the debris who knows where without any analysis of it at all. A downed plane stays in a hangar for as long as it takes to find out what happened, but the buildings were never investigated in that way. We can only take their word for what happened and yet, they will use the fear of it to manipulate. They need to get on with the clean up and restore NOLA to what it was before, a vibrant and living city.

The date that Katrina hit landfall is just a date.
The disaster happened in the week that followed.
Very few people died in the hurricane. 1300+ died in the week after the hurricane, most of whom could have been saved by a competant preparation and response.

The hurricane is less the culprit than the administration and FEMA.
