I think we're going to win. |
|
I'm seeing a lot of positive signs that we are going to come out of the Bush nightmare okay although there will be a lot of rebuilding to do, both literally (New Orleans) and figuratively. But look around.
Some of the Godfathers of the Right aren’t sounding very positive about things. George Will thinks that the Iraq war is most likely "untenable" and has become a "civil war,” while William F Buckley says that, "One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed"
On the subject of gay marriage and the “culture war” in general, Pat Buchanan’s opinion is that, “…there's no doubt which way the trend is going. And it is not going the conservative way" And today Rush Limbaugh apparently got a call in support of a national health program from one of his Dittoheads and subsequently a whole slew of emails came in from other Dittoheads supporting the guy's position. Reports are that Rush was not amused.
As was not the case in the 1930’s Fascism is not in the ascendancy worldwide in 2006. It’s more the opposite. It is mainly in America (and Russia) where there has been a push in this direction and it seems to be running out of steam here.
Freedom is not on the march in this country and Americans are waking up to that. A recent Zogby poll shows 92% of Americans demand right to view the vote count and support taking steps to insure that election officials are kept honest. Bush, Chaney and Rumsfeld are starting to sound more and more like the empty disconnected failures that they are. We’re not there yet but I think we are going to be okay.

1. I sure do like your phrase about Bush, Cheney and Rummy "starting to |
|
sound more and more like the empty disconnected failures they are."
That says it for me.

But I'm pessimistic. I think that they are going to steal another election before more people wake up.

4. You're right that people are starting to see through Bush/Cheney |
|
The problem is that they aren't running in 08. We'll be starting with a clean slate. The challenge for us will be to tie the next Repub candidate to Bush and all his failures. We will also need to convince the American public that Democrats are actually better than repubs in matters of defense and security (it is possible since Bush has made the country and the world LESS safe because of Iraq).

8. Any Repug who has been in politics for the last few years... |
|
has got a lot of baggage to unload. A lot depends on whether the Dems have the killer instinct or not.

5. Well put. I certainly hope you are right. |

Personally, I've seen a malaise affecting this country for the entire span of the Bush Administration. It's a pervasive atmosphere of hopelessness. An inability to either recognize problems or solve the ones we reluctantly recognize. Instead of pragmatic and honest action we've been given a steady diet of spin, avoidance, and propaganda.
As a result, we get the malaise. A sense that we can't put matters right and that there isn't much hope for better things -- at least in the short run.
More than anything, I'm banking on a Democratic win in November. If we can take back the House, at least, we'll be on the way to putting some checks on what's happened to us. If we take the Senate too, we can begin doing some of the things that really need to be done. It's my sincere hope that Democrats will provide us with something better. If they don't, God help us.

that the Democratic party is the best vehicle for change but it's about all we've got. I read on Raw Story a while ago that corporate contrubtions to the Dems are way up. Not sure whether to cheer or cry about this. Guess what really bothers me though is the America of the last few years is not the America I was taught about or that my parents believed in. Gotta believe that we're coming back though

10. About corporate contributions |
|
Even the wealthy investor class can see that Democrats are better for business. The stock market was up up up for most of the Clinton years. The stock market has not done a damn thing with "pro-business" bush in charge. People aren't stupid and numbers don't lie.

6. I think you're right but I don't let it go to my head |
|
Every time I see a positive sign for change I try and keep a balanced viewpoint by reminding myself of all the things that haven't changed. That helps me to keep up the pressure and not sit back and take it easy. Oh, and BTW welcome to the wonderful community of DU. The only thing that could improve it would be to have regular face to face get togethers.

11. OK, so alot of people are mad at bush |
|
that's no secret. Alot of people think he's a failure and not just the people that didn't vote for him in the first place. That brings up 2 questions. Are they also mad at the republicans or just bush? And second, where will they turn to now? Stick with republicans cause it's 'still better than the alternative' or stay home or give the dems a chance. It could be a very interesting election.

A lot of Repubs are convinced that being associated with Bush and his policies is not to their advantage ergo they don't want him anywhere near them. I think the Dems need to start bringing up quotes and votes from the past when these same Repubs thought Bush and the boys we're just the best thing ever. Whether the voters turn to the Dems as a viable alternative depends I think on how forthrightly and unapologetically the Dems talk act and vote like Liberals. If we are seen as being weak it's because we are afraid to champion our own convictions.

although I think it would be intersting to see Jeb (or whoever) trailing in the polls in 2008 by 10 or so points, pull it out on election night and then watch massive riots demanding he step aside because people KNOW that had to be fixed.

18. I think you're wrong about their doing nothing |
|
There are too many old line Republicans who have had it with the way things are going and who have genuine concerns about the constitutionality of a lot of what's gone down. I don't think it's just the Dems against the world anymore. But there is something attractive about a good old fashioned people power take-it-to-the-streets mass protest against the more blatently fixed elections.
