Rightwing radio kills Dixie Chicks' Houston concert

No Chicks In Houston
Updated 01:19 PDT Tue, Aug 22 2006

The Dixie Chicks have had their share of fits and starts on their tour so far, and promoter AEG's Louis Messina says radio played a part in Houston.
Despite selling out the Compaq Center in the group's 2003 visit, the Chicks axed their 2006 visit without tickets ever going on sale. Country radio stations in the area don't play the Chicks and credit listeners for voting the band off the air, leading to the cancellation.
Messina said he thinks it's more than that.
Messina told the Houston Chronicle that area radio stations refused to promote the concert. "Radio has chosen not only to not promote ; they wouldn't even accept our advertising money," he said.

2. Way to support the troops
by not listening to a country band. The boys in Iraq really appreciate it :eyes:

3. start boycotting Republican contributors.
The fright wingers do it en masse. They boycott anything liberal. We need to do similarly.

9. I think the Dixie Chicks have weathered their detractors' ill-mannered
bigotry very well.

They strike me as very poised souls. The people trying to blacklist and ban them strike me as raging assholes.

This chapter on American popular music is going to be a lot more respectful and appreciative of the Dixie Chicks, I predict, than it will of any of their tormentors.

Strong, talented women singing the truth in tune.

but they're still coming and I'm still going to see them.

18. It will be my pleasure. Saw them on their last tour and they were
excellent - very polished, very professional. When Marti plays that fiddle, the audience goes wild.

11. Why, these days, would they NEED radio promotion?
Surely that's not the only medium available in Houston.

This can't possibly be the whole story.

Houston's population is 2 million (metro area only), and Toyota Center holds up to 19,000. That's 1%, and doesn't even count the suburbs.

The Chicks might not have filled the arena to capacity, but I have trouble believing that radio alone is to blame for the no-show.

Tickets didn't even go on sale. Maybe the Chicks were making a statement?

I dunno, but in this case I don't think radio's the powerful gorilla they might think they are.

13. Is it possible to list all actors and recording artists
who support the extreme right wing of the republican party, so that we can boycott their TV shows, movies and concerts?

16. Does RW Radio speak for Houston?
I wonder how the majority of Houstonians like the idea that RW radio is the arbiter of what they can hear and see in their City? The only thing this has accomplished is making Houston look like the FreeRepublic of American Cities.

17. I've said this a million times, but there's one way to beat the wingnuts
at their boycott game, and you just know it kills them.

At the very least, please download "I'm not ready to make nice" from iTunes for only 99 cents.

Hell, download the entire record if you can afford it.

Or, purchase their music at the store if you don't have internet!!

Here's the thing.....people may be able to pressure radio stations not to play the Chicks' music and they may be able to interfere with concerts.

But there's not one goddam thing they can do to stop us from downloading and buying the Dixie Chicks' music!! NOTHING.

I've downloaded some music and it makes me feel good because I feel like I've stuck it to those hateful wingnuts. (I realize hateful wingnuts is redundant!)

Anyway, can't you at least download one song to help support these great women who are on our side!?? :bounce:
