Vacationing officer beaten at N.J. shore

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. -- A vacationing police officer was beaten with a baseball bat at the New Jersey shore in what authorities called a hate crime, and three men - including a university lacrosse player - have been charged.

The three young men, all white, were charged in Tuesday's beating of the officer from Cheltenham, Pa., who is black. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.

Jarreau Francis, 25, was walking in Sea Isle City with two white colleagues at 3 a.m. when he was attacked. One or more suspects beat him in the head with the bat, made racial slurs and threatened him, police said.

"They didn't know he was an off-duty police officer. Just the fact that he was black was the target of this whole incident here," Sea Isle Police Detective Jon Gansert told WCAU-TV. A second officer was struck while trying to intervene, officials said. The suspects ran but were quickly arrested.

Vince J. Giordano, 21, of Moorestown, N.J., a lacrosse player for the University of Delaware, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and bias intimidation. Charged with the same counts were Keith Hoffman, 23, of Folcroft, Pa.; and Thomas Russo, 21, of Lansdowne, Pa.

12. I think our Republican leadership is to blame.
They condemn gays, and bring forth legislation meant to discriminate against them, which leads others to believe that bigotry is acceptable in our society now.

After all, if you're going to discriminate against gays, how far out of the realm of possibilities is the discrimination of others? People with skin color other than white, or religions other than Christian need to take note. All is fair game under the Bush Gestapo's leadership.

I just read this morning that a bus driver made some black children sit in the back of the bus so that white kids could sit up front. I can't tell you how angry that made me. And now this. I can see where all this is leading. We must have a change in leadership in this country, and a renewed acceptance of all citizens, with equal rights for all, or we will have to fight the fights we've already fought again.

There is no room for hate or discrimination in the world today. We have other more serious issues to tend to. Like the fact that Mother Nature is about to do us all in because of our lack of concern for our environment.

He was like the only real athelete, came from a middle class family. He often spoke about the other player's feelings of rich boy entitlement. He put up with cause he loved the game.

"Hey... it's about the gays! The gays! You were supposed to start leaving us alone if we helped you go after the gays!"

We either all hang together, or we all hang seperately.

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

contestants along racial lines. Pop culture (a suspect term if there ever was one) is jumping on the bandwagon, also.

28. I don't think that's logical.

I've never seen anyone claim that North America, North East America, New Jersey or any other region of the US is entirely free of racism.

To confront the claim that racism is more prevalent in e.g. the South than the North, or in some states than others, you'd need statistics, not anecdotes.

31. Or maybe the issue that a black man was beaten by three white thugs
should still be the prime focus of this thread? Why would anyone want to take the focus of this thread off the actual issue of racism regardless of where it occurs?

17. I live in Northern NJ, about 10 miles from Manhattan and I deal
with a racist bully every night at my new job. My husband's brother, a public school history teacher who lived in Brooklyn his entire life, is another rabid racist. It's so bad, we avoid him like the plague. It's all over the place and unfortunately racists feel empowered to be more outspoken about it. If they're called on it they play the "political correctness destroyed the country" card.

I wonder what happened to his two colleagues when this attack began.

14. What do you expect from people from the north-east
Probably went to an all white "public" town school. Might have only seen black people on MTV. Nothing but a bunch of college going, volvo driving racists up there. Hell I heard they keep all the blacks in Jersey in a couple of large city's. Won't even allow them in the white cities schools or beaches. What can you do. North-east has always been segregated.

29. No it hasn't.
Hey there are plenty of of wonderful progressive places in the south. I'm surprised that you would write off an entire section of the country that lets face it any Democrat will need to win a national office. I've lived in both the North-east and the south and when it comes to segregation a progressive place such as Fairfield county CT is much more segregated than where I live now.

36. It currently is less segregated than most northern cities.
The schools in the south are also integrated unlike most northern "townships"

Yas the south used to have Jim Crow. But the north still has Bridgeport CT only twenty minutes from progressive Westport Ct.

neighborhood close to Philly. There was a CBS report several months ago on the area; a Cathoic school there was closing and some kid was raising money to keep it open.
