Folks, a whole SLEW of docs/films just out and coming out in September!

There have been recently many threads on 9/11 Press For Truth, Freedom to Fascism, and other documentaries and other relevant films that are starting to air in the theaters soon. Greenwald is coming out with Iraq for Sale soon, which will be scheduled for national TV screenings in early October. Sibel Edmonds will have her French-made documentary on TV sometime shortly. We should have a way of centrally identifying all of the various ones out there that tackle each of the currently important issues out there now so that we can arm ourselves with DVD house parties, etc. in the fall where these films are needed. I'll put in a first pass with stuff I found/just ordered from a few sites now (along with links on where to buy them). Feel free to add to the list. I'm at the moment trying to focus on new DVDs coming out, but if there are some older ones that are hugely relevant, and others I don't have here, feel free to add. I'm currently putting those that are coming out on DVD. There are also many not showing up for preorder on DVD yet, and we might want to have a list of those too so that we can encourage them getting produced shortly. If many of us buy those available now, perhaps it will send a message to the studios/distributors that more of these others not offered on DVD should be put on DVD shortly too. The more message we can get out before November, hopefully it will be harder for the uninformed to ignore the truths out there!

Some of these you can get online too, but here's some links to build a library if you are so inclined.

5. A couple more
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 06:11 PM by Monkey see Monkey Do
Now: CSA: Confederate States of America Satirical mockumentary charting a parallel history where the South won the civil war (November in UK)

Clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W08zB4maza0

Now: Manderlay Dramatical companion piece to the above. Part attack on America foreign policy, part scathing attack on race-relations in the US. Technically a sequel to Dogville (amazing film, but you don't need to view in order), with Bryce Dallas Howard taking on the role of Grace from Nicole Kidman. I cannot recommend this film enough.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH0q5xcigtw

09/11/06 - Documentaries That Changed The World - John Pilger UK DVD which sounds very worth importing, especially for Pilger fans (to do so you'd need a multi-region DVD player that can play PAL discs) out 11th September:

Vietnam - The Quiet Mutiny (1970)
Year Zero - The Silent Death of Cambodia (1979)
Burp! Pepsi v Coke in the Ice Cold War (1982)
Nicaragua - A Nation's Right to Survive (1983)
Death of a Nation - The Timor Conspiracy (1994)
Flying the Flag - Arming the World (1995)
Inside Burma - Land of Fear (1996)
Welcome to Australia (1999)
Paying the Price - Killing the Children of Iraq (2000)
Palestine Is Still The Issue (2002)
Breaking the Silence - Truth and Lies in the War on Terror (2003)
Stealing A Nation (2004)

9. A few more...

At some point I hope to get a web site up with a way of centralizing this info for all relevant documentaries, films, etc. for progressives. Don't know how soon I can do that, but I've got a big enough collection of them at the moment as well as an interest to help facilitate house parties that at some point we can have a good starting point to find stuff instead of going to tons of different places trying to find stuff.

Now - A Little Light'll Do Ya - Defending Democracy in America - Boxer's Rebellion challenging the 2004 election, etc.
Now - Back the Attack - How we were lead as a country into supporting World War II.
Now - Codex and Nutricide - Two documentary bundle dealing with the freedom to eat healthily.
Now - Community Choice: The Movement for Energy Independence - Reports on local efforts to move towards sustainable energy alternatives.
Now - Denial Stops Here: From 9-11 to Peak Oil and Beyond - Michael C. Ruppert's first original DVD since the landmark Truth and Lies of 9-11!
Now - Eyes on the Fries-Young Workers in the Service Economy - How kids deal with "McJobs"...
Now - Free Zone: Democracy Meets the Nuclear Threat - An overview of an international movement to move to a Nuclear Free Zone.
Now - Got Democracy? - Video expose on America's Electoral system in crisis.
Now - Here, In America - How immigrants are demonized in War Time.
Now - Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story - How a Japanese boy was screwed with a WWII internment.
Now - Hood Politics - A raunchy look at how "The Hood" looks at politics.
Now - Investigative Reports: Intelligence Failures - Not much info on this one.
Now - Labor Women - Documentary on immigrant women trying to help build a union contract.
Now - Local Power - The story of Community Choice Energy Revolution.
Now - New Rulers of the World, The - John Pilger's look at globalization in Indonesia.
Now - New World Border - A look at human rights abuses on the Mexico/U.S. border.
Now - Palau Chronicles, The: Nuclear Politics in the Pacific - Palau's efforts to have a "nuclear free" constitution and Washington's efforts to stop it.
Now - Patriot Act: A Jeffrey Ross Home Movie - Not really about the Patriot Act, but a "patriotic act" of Jeffrey Ross and other comics entertaining the troops in Iraq.
Now - Public Exposure: DNA, Democracy & the Wireless "Revolution" - Health effects of radiofrequency emissions from newer wireless technologies of today are studied.
Now - Punishment Park - Peter Watkins film of 1971 looks at the blacklash against leftist activism at that time.
Now - Shadow Company - A study of mercenaries (aka "private security contractors") being used in places like Iraq.
Now - Uprooted: Refugees of the Gloal Economy - A documentary talking about the displacement of families of migrant workers.
Now - Valley of the Wolves Iraq - (Kurtlar Vadisi Irak) - Controversial high budget Turkish film starring Billy Zane and Gary Busey that builds upon depictions of real events in Iraq to show a story where the Americans are the bad guys instead of the prototypical good guys. Note that these DVDs on Ebay are Region 2 DVDs as this isn't available in the U.S., so you'll need a regionless DVD player to play them. There is a mixed language soundtrack with a lot of English voice in it along with subtitles.
Now - Vote Rigging - National Teachin on Electoral Crisis in the U.S., and what to do about it.
Now - When News Lies - DVD/Book combination about media complicity with the Bush administration on the war in Iraq.
Now - WTC 9/11/01 - Day of Disaster - a lot of footage from 9/11 disaster on site.
9/5/06 - August in the Empire State - A look at the 2004 Republican Convention behind the scenes.
??? - Ambassador, The (Ambassadøren) - Norwegian documentary that pulls NO punches on Negroponte! Saw a part of it at Democracy Fest. Wish I'd had a chance to see all of it. Though DVDs do exist of this, I don't think it's being sold yet.
??? - Anytown, U.S.A. - Documentary about a partisan local mayoral race in Bogota, New Jersey.
??? - Apollo 11: The Untold Story - How close Apollo 11 came to tragedy. On google video for now.
??? - Chavez: Inside the Coup - Documents the coup against Hugo Chavez. It's been pulled from distribution as noted here.
??? - Dixie Chicks: Shut up and Sing - Documentary on the Dixie Chicks' battles of words with Bushco. New version to be shown in Toronto shortly.
??? - Four Corners - Peak Oil? - Australian investigative team looks into the problem of shrinking supplies of oil.
??? - Freedom to Fascism - A little more of a Libertarian point of view than progressive (with a lot of anti income tax agenda in it), but sounds like it pretty much goes after the neocons on fascism pretty heavily too.
??? - Friendly Fire - Documentary on the effects of depleted uranium and other deadly chemicals and radiation in wartime on American soldiers.
??? - Help America Vote on Paper - New film on election fraud issues.
??? - Inconvenient Truth, An - How soon does this get on DVD? Hopefully soon!
??? - Iraq: The Hidden Story - More investigative reporting from Iraq.
??? - Jesus Camp - Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio covers kids going to "Jesus Camp".
??? - Power of Nightmares, the - Study of how Islamic Fundamentalism and Neoconservatism is going at it and how it affects the world.
??? - Raymundo - Biography of leftist Argentinian filmmaker Raymundo Gleyzer. Supposedly DVDs are floating around for this one someplace. Haven't tracked down a good online source for it yet though.
??? - (Sibel Edmonds documentary on European Television) - Still not much info on this, though this work by Mathieu Verboud should be airing soon in France or other parts of Europe.
??? - Sicko - Michael Moore's latest film effort going after the health care industry appear to be delayed until 2007.
??? - The War Tapes - Real life drama of video accounts from an actual National Guard unit stationed in Iraq.
??? - When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts - Spike Lee's inspired documentary of Hurricane Katrina on HBO. Best bet is probably getting it off of HBO when it airs on August 29th and burning it on DVD for right now.

14. Thanks for noting this one!...
This film sounds great! Thanks! This is precisely the kind of film that gets lost, but is one that we should all be able to have access to that has been a problem I've tried to come up with ways of addressing. So many indy films and those with progressive themes if they are too "controversial" or perceived as targeting too much of a "fringe audience" are really hard to find for those that might be interested. Either:

a) They can't get the information of the film to start with.
b) They can't find any inexpensive way of getting access to it to their needs.
c) The inexpensive means of getting access to it (film showings) isn't close by to where they are or at a time they can see it.

Send me an IM some time. I have some ideas on how to deal with these sorts of problems and I do want to hear from indy filmmakers what works for them as I think a solution needs to have an element that works well for them and helps makes any good solution also beneficial to those that help tackle these problems too. With the internet, we certainly have the means to find such information, but with all of the balkanization of different sites that talk about this stuff without enough gatekeepers directing traffic to them, it still makes it a hard problem to solve. That and things like copyright and distribution laws, which both protect the indy filmmaker, but also serve to in some cases to restrict access to them in a systematically efficient manner and further this balkanization unless we can come up with creative ways that benefit both the consumer and provider of such films. Ultimately the theater distribution system has their own sets of films that are more mainstream and profitable for them the way the system is set up already, so they don't want to lead in helping build such a channel of distribution either.

15. Just remembered Ed Schultz promoting this one the other day...
Of course he's already jumped in earlier testing an electric car prototype, so has an added interest in it. Talked to the filmmaker on his show about it too.

Now - Who Killed the Electric Car? - Documentary on how car companies toyed with the electric car earlier but unexplainedly pulled it from those testing it, etc., now leaving us further behind in this growing market now.

19. One more film I'll selfishly add is Brats...
I know one of the producers, and got to know the filmmaker talking to her when we had a screening of it in Dallas last summer at a reunion of brats when I lived overseas. It's pretty cool in that those who made it are strong Democrats (though they are careful to be neutral about talking about it as a non-profit film). Kris Kristoferson donated his time and his song writing skills to it with his narration, etc., since he was also a military brat himself at one point.

Brats: Our Journey Home

I thought of it as a cool film to show to military films now at a time when they have to be on the fence politically with what is going on Iraq, and perhaps could be swayed by people sponsoring a viewing to them. It really hits hard as one of the few films on this topic for a huge number of Americans who've lived as brats at one time or another, and the film makes a point that military life is almost a life of socialism in a way, with more forced integration earlier than the rest of the country, and many things supplied to you in the military (free housing, reduced cost of merchandise at a PX, etc.). When that's pointed out and yet some identify positively with that experience for them in many cases, I think many will see the value to our ways of thinking, even if that might not be what's drummed into them.

Tried to get that going with a showing or two earlier here in district 50, but surprisingly enough there aren't that many military families that live in this district that are registered locally. Many are registered in other states even though they might live here. We still might get a showing down here near Miramar where I live, but it's not as high on the agenda here to help GOTV. Maybe in other places it might help though.

Contact her though if you think it might help to have her help with a showing, as they are travelling around giving showings with the film not in wide distribution yet. You can get a DVD off of this site.
