Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young last night......WHAT A SHOW!!!!!!!
It was at the Jones Beach Marine Theatre (yes, actually on the waterfront) on the south shore of Nassau County, New York.

THEY WERE SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!! Mix of new songs from the "Living With War" album and some of the acoustic oldies. They did sing "The Ohioan" (not sure that's the exact title - the song about the Kent State killings), "Teach Your Children", "Our House". The graphics were unbelievable!!!!!! Much of the time the only thing showing on the screens was a huge peace symbol. During one song they showed photos of the 2609 American service members who have been killed in Iraq (with the ever-increasing number running across the bottom of the screen as the song progressed). During another song they showed clips of Commander Codpiece with his lying words written out underneath.

BUT....AND THIS WAS INCREDIBLE.....Late in the show they finally did the song about impeaching the president. For this song - and this song only - they had all the words clearly written out (white on black screens) to make extra sure EVERYBODY got the message. IT WAS FANTASTIC. Many people were singing along (I was as loudly as I could).

I wore my "WORST PRESIDENT EVER" tee shirt with the photo of * holding the tiny flag on the front, and the words DEMOCRATICUNDERGROUND.COM in large letters on the back. Got a bunch of thumbs up (but not nearly as many as I would have expected).

The tickets are pricey (ours were $126 each for dead center, just a little ways up from the orchestra, i.e., just slightly elevated)...but if they're coming near to where you live and if you can manage it, SEE THIS SHOW!!!! It ended with "Rocking in the Free World."

I'm not even a rock 'n' roll concert goer. Normally I go hear Baroque music concerts. And up until last night, the greatest thing I ever saw LIVE was when I saw Mikhail Baryshnikov dance (and also Rudolf Nureyev).

ANYHOW...IF YOU CAN GO, GO!!!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

P.S. No opening act. No encore. Just them....for about 3 1/2 hours with a brief 20 break. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. I saw them last time they went on tour together, which was in 2000
and they were unbelievable. Glad to see that they are still putting out the same type of show.

And the correct name of the song is just "Ohio".

54. Yeah Young just tore it up when I saw them
and they had Russ Krunkel, session guy, on drums and Donald (Duck) Dunn, Blues Brothers, on Bass. One of the best shows I have ever seen. And that's going on 35 years of rock and roll shows.

2. $126?
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 03:43 PM by Blue_In_AK
I saw them free three or four times back in the very early '70s. The times they are a-changin'. LOL.

Seriously, I would love to see them again, but very few big groups come to Alaska, unless they're just going fishing and want to do a show for fun. Or unless they're Ted Nugent and want to murder a moose.

6. I've got lawn tickets for Chicago show
Wish I could have afforded real seats, but we have binoculars--and reading glasses in case there's a program ;) !

CSNY's Deja Vu album was one of the first two albums I got when I got involved in the "counter-culture" in 1970, so they are near and dear to my heart. I never go to concerts anymore, but this one was a MUST-SEE. Thanks for the preview.

39. Hi shanti..Yes, I think he did do that..I was watching through binoculars
and I was trying to figure out what was going on. As I mentioned in my original post, I'm a rock'n'roll concert newbie (unless you count seeing the Beatles at the Paramount in Brooklyn(?) back around 1965). So I wasn't aware of this apparent tradition of his. But in retrospect, I guess that WAS what was going on. Thanks for the info!

19. I think I saw you last night, section 9L? I was in your row!
What a phenomenal show, they were so powerful, putting it all out there and sounding amazing. They were excellent and the sold out crowd loved them. The last time I saw all four of them together was at a venue in New Jersey the night Nixon resigned. They announced it from the stage and pandemonium broke out. I was hoping history would repeat itself thirty two years later. That did not happen, but I didn't go home disappointed. Great night. And after more than three years of reading DU daily, I was finally prompted to post, so thanks!

22. My wife and I saw them july 31st at the hollywood bowl
i have not seen them in 30 years but they still have what it takes . They took us back to the past and brought us back and still the songs are valid for these times . Ohio and Chicago , rocking the free world and impeach the idiot .

We did not have the best seats but we could see them ok , they have large screens if you are far back . Really just being there and hearing them live was all that you need . I can't say if the crowd entered into the sing along much or the political position of the 18,000 people in the seats but I was into it .

We live less than a half mile from the bowl and had to go back during the day a week later just to try to get the feeling back from that night . We were just trying to hold onto what little we have to keep hopeful which their music certainly inspires .

53. blues90.....so much food for thought in your post......
As I indicated above, I had never seen them before. The first time my SO and I went to a concert together was around 1970 and it was mostly Beethoven's music. It was at that point that we discovered that he didn't care for classical music. We have NEVER been to a concert together since (though I go to classical concerts alone quite frequently, and he doesn't go to any at all).

Around last April or so I read somewhere here on DU about Neil's new album and its title caught my attention....enough to go to his web site and to look at the schedule of concerts.

So the next day I casually mentioned to my SO about the concert being rather close to where we live and MUCH to my total astonishment, he said he's always liked CSNY and he would try to get tickets. Amazing. I had already known him at least 35 years when I first found out about two years ago that he loves orchids (and we've since been to two orchid shows at the magnificent New York Botanical Gardens or whatever it's called, in the Bronx, NY.)

And yes, they did sing Chicago.

But the main point I wanted to make is that I totally agree with the very last line of your post, and I share your feelings. SOMEONE out there has to have what it takes to stop this neverending insanity. Thanks very much for writing.

Simply great. I sat in the nosebleed seats, only paid $50.
Funniest thing that happened is that when they started singing Let's Impeach the President (now this came very late in the show , after they had already sung several songs from Young's new album, "Living with War" and made quite a few anti-Bush statements.)
Some asshole in my section gets up and leaves, shooting the band the bird while he goes.
I mean WTF, did this guy have a clue as to who CSNY are or what they've done for 40 friggin years.
Great show.

50. No, proud2Blib, they weren't. They were just wearing what for them are
I guess regular clothes (though Neil's shirt did have the look of Army fatigues and he had a similarly colored Army-looking hat on). Crosby and Stills had (really garish) Hawaiian-type shirts on, and Nash was dressed very blandly (rather like the crew of the Starship Enterprise from the original Star Trek, but without the little logo on the shirt).

63. Hey, shanti.....well, no, I wouldn't have noticed that.
As I've mentioned above, I've never been to a rock concert before, so I don't know what he sounded like when he was younger.

Also, before the concert, the only one of them I could have identified by sight would be Crosby (because of the white flyaway hair). I had no idea who was who of the other three.

I will say that Crosby's voice sounded particularly strong (strong like an older opera singer, may be the best way I can describe it). Rather powerful at times (when needed that way), and other times very, very gentle.

46. I hope if they go to New Orleans that they will do it for free.
They are good guys. I once worked for a business who had them as clients.

47. I thought about writing to them and suggesting that when I first heard
about the tour. Maybe they could let in people from New Orleans for free with NOLA driver's licenses?

If they came, I would make a custom Swamp Rat t-shirt to wear... and one for each of them! :D

49. Do it Swampie. It's worth a try. Maybe they just need a bug in
their ear to help them think about it.

48. SR.....If a DVD comes out, PM me your address and I'll send it to you.
That's a promise.

I hope you're doing OK down there. That's such a wimpy thing for me to say after what you've lived through. I wish CSNY would have scheduled a concert for NO and that it would have been a FREE concert. If that thought occurred to my puny brain, surely it should have occurred to CSNY!!!!! Actually, a free concert in NO would have been still another slap in the face of those mofos in DC.

P.S. I always keep my promises.

58. Yes, it certainly does. And thanks to EVERYONE for posting here....
It was so very, very enjoyable to hear YOUR experiences from all over the country and from CSNY's earlier days.

Dorothy only had it partly right: "There's no place like DU home." :grouphug:

64. The first time I saw them
Was before they were CSNY , it was buffalo springfield with young and stills . there was a small club for the youth between 16 and 19 called the dark spot in a suburb called roselle in Illinois . Young had this buffalo bill jacket on and at the end youg was so into his guitar that stills finally pulled the guitar cord out of youngs amp and young kept going . This was back in the days of a bit of drug use .

I can't believe it's been so long ago , time flies now look where we are , in some kind of hell .

This concert was the only thing since 2000 that I looked forward to .

72. Hi Green Tea!
Except that it wasn't Bart's Worst President Ever shirt.....It's the one made by DU!!!

And besides, to be totally truthful, not only don't I have a scanner hooked up to my computer (I don't have a PRINTER even) and I don't own a digital camera. They're going to have to pry my 35mm Minolta out of my cold dead hands before I give it up.......or until they stop manufacturing film! :)

70. Sounds like the show I saw in Philly
Opening night of the tour...it was equally superb, and ranked up there with my all-time favorite concert experiences (I can't remember most of my other all-time favorite shows, which means they all must have been GREAT! -- LOL! Child of the seventies, you know!). I've seen Neil Young several times, in all his incarnations, from pure accoustic at Tanglewood to kickin' ass with Sonic Youth and Crazy Horse in Hartford, but I'd never seen all four of them perform together. I expected the worst, like one of those perpetually touring Chicago or Beach Boys shows that turn up every summer -- ugh -- but the boys were TIGHT and the harmonies were as sweet as ever.

I agree with your assessment. Coughing up $126 a ticket officially made it my most expensive concert ever, but I think they figured on the demographic being lots of 40-something professional people with plenty of spare cake, as opposed to struggling kids who hitchhiked across the state with five bucks in the torn Levi's. I mean, if anyone told me a few years ago that I'd spend $45 on a t-shirt and $32 on a cap (which someone has already stolen! -- the awesome one with the peace sign, no-W, and No War symbols on the front) I'd say "pass the spliff, dude!" But how could I not? I have to mail order a replacement cap. The looks I'd get while wearing it were always fun, be the reaction negative or positive!

Thanks for the review. I hadn't heard much about the tour since we saw it. It breezed through Boston without hardly a mention out here in Hartford. Go see it if you can, people. Even if CSNY was never your favorite group, this show will send chills down your spine, and give you some real pride in your country again. It was a very "patriotic" show, and the a capella tribute to the fallen soldiers, while their pictures filled the big screen behind the stage, was a real tear-jerker!
