California may be on to something with SB 1441
As someone who has followed the "faith-based" funds channel out of the taxpayer coffers, I've been more than a little miffed about state dollars being used by groups who are not required to offer equal employment opportunities. That is, those religious groups who take faith-based monies are free to discriminate in their hiring practices.

California's SB 1441 -- introduced by Sen. Sheila James Kuehl -- requires "any program or activity that... receives any financial assistance from the state" to not discriminate. Transsexual, bisexual, homosexual... it doesn't matter. The best part is that there is absolutely no waiver for religious institutions. If they want state dollars, they have play on the same field as everyone else.

It was approved by the state assembly and is now sitting on Schwarzenegger's desk. He must sign or veto by 5 p.m. on Saturday.

1. We here in California have been working for Sheila's bills
even if it's only cheering on the sidelines. I think Ahnold is dead meat if he vetoes. Well, he's dead meat if he doesn't. Ahnold is damned if does and damned if he doesn't. He should have chosen his political bedmates more carefully.

2. I hope you're right, Cleita. Don't see how we can predict thought,
now that they've "conformed" our election systems to HAVA.

4. I hope I am too, but it's sort of how I see it.
btw. Does anybody know anything about those 5,000 jobs he was supposed to have created in California according to his latest political ad? Exactly what are those jobs?

5. I'm out of touch at the state level. County, I do better.
But, he bought the farm with a lot of people by going after workers AND remember, he wanted to euthanize dogs after 72 hours to save a few dollars. Schmuck.

3. First open lesbian in the CA state legislature
Amazing woman. Wrote much of the domestic violence legislation here in CA.

THIS is someone who should run for national office.

6. Zelda on the Dobie Gillis show, too.
My favorite character on that show. Her political career has been outstanding. I only wish she lived up here in norther Ca so I could vote for her. I agree with you. I hope she is least one of our senators someday.

7. She was once an actress.
She was Zelda in the "Lives of Dobie Gillis". As a person who knew a lot of Hollywood people in my youth including Dobie Gillis's sister (Dwayne Hickman) whose was in my class in high school, I am not always fond of their crossing into politics, like Reagan and Ahnold, but Sheila is doing a great job and I support her in every way I can.
