Monte Python meets Peak Oil

Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant.
your eyes will bug, your jaw will drop, you'll clutch your guts-
You will be begging your friends to watch this.
Trust me. Trust me. Trust me.

Robert Newman gets to grips with the wars and politics of the last hundred years - but rather than adhering to the history we were fed at school, he places oil centre stage as the cause of all commotion.

This innovative history programme is based around Robert Newman's stand-up act and supported by resourceful archive sequences and stills with satirical impersonations of historical figures from Mayan priests to Archduke Ferdinand.

Quirky details such as a bicycle powered street lamp on the stage brings home the pertinent question of just how we are going to survive when the world's oil supplies are finally exhausted.

6. Did you understand the Pope joke ?
Not sure where you are. Glasgow Rangers is to Protestants as Glasgow Celtic is to Catholics.

I thoroughly enjoyed that - gets the whole lot in doesn't it.

11. Near the end
where the Pope has been composted. The guy mentions finding a Glasgow Rangers shirt in with the Pope's belongings. :) As I said - Rangers is the Protestant team.

There are so many jokes in there you'll to watch it at least two times. Sure gets the message over.

12. If you go direct to Google video
here:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7374585792978336967

and click the button next to the volume (a rectangle with arrows pointing up, down, left & right) it'll open it up in fullscreen. This won't improve the resolution but might be something towards what you're after.

Thank you for posting it. I will distribute as far as I can. Fortunately, Gore has galvanized and continues to galvanize a number of people globally to get off our collective arses and do something. Hope we can do it for our kids sakes.

17. He was big in the UK about 15 years ago
as part of a radio then TV show called The Mary Whitehouse Experience. He & his then comedy partner David Baddiel got massive (selling out Wembley Arena) at a time when music magazines were touting comedy as the new rock 'n roll and Newman as its Morrissey.

Newman & Baddiel circa 1993

For a variety of reasons the two split and Newman pretty much disappeared from the public eye. His webpage biography doesn't even mention the above. He wrote two pretty awful novels then started doing bits & bobs of standup. He also spent a lot of time getting politically active on a grassroots level.

His first main comeback tour was in 2001 with a show called From Caliban to the Taliban. In 2003 his third novel (& one he's proud of) - The Fountain At The Center Of The World - was published and last year he toured with the critically acclaimed show Apocalypso Now. His History of Oil TV special is basically the first half of that tour with a few bits tweaked around. The whole thing is available on CD (or through Audible IIRC) and whilst I personally thing the material used in 'History of Oil' is the best, I'd strongly recommend the CD. He's currently touring with The History of the World Backwards - the complete script of which is at his site www.robnewman.com (though that seems to be down for me at the moment).

You can buy From Caliban to the Taliban (DVD or CD), Apocalypso Now and The Fountain At the Center of the World at his online shop (I don't know if US retailers carry them).

18. Even video games are getting in on Peak Oil
Watch this trailer for Fuel of War: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/frontlinesfuelofwar/video_player.html?id=J3c0kmTx5b8IvTM

Scarily accurate, IMO, if we don't invest in some form of alt. energy NOW.

20. It's everywhere; "energy supplies running out" is mentioned in passing
regularly. It seems to be pretty well entrenched in the public consciousness, yet most governments are virtually silent about it.
