Lieberman To Remain On New Haven Voter List As A Democrat
<snip>

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Joe Lieberman won't have to fight to stay in the Democratic Party after all.

Democratic registrar Sharon Ferrucci rejected a group of peace activists' petition to strike Lieberman from the party rolls on Thursday, even though he lost the Democratic primary and is running in the general election as part of a new party, Connecticut for Lieberman.

Had Ferrucci agreed to the petition, she could have scheduled a hearing in which Lieberman would be called to explain why he should remain in the party that nominated him for the vice presidency in 2000. Ferrucci said that state law does provide a method for expelling a party member but that "such authority, in my opinion, should be rarely and cautiously exercised."

The law allows for expulsion from a party if the party member runs for office as part of another political party. Some experts said that expulsion would be up to the local registrar of voters and the local party chairman.

"The Democratic Party is founded upon principles of inclusion and diversity of opinion and the promotion of debate," Ferrucci said. "I do not intend to summon anyone enrolled in my party to defend the good faith and bona fide nature of their affiliation with the Democratic Party."

running as a Democratic nominee. What is so hard about it? He's not a Democrat, so leaving him on the ballot is misleading and will confuse voters.

11. Hey, Ferrucci, the debate ended when he decided to run in
opposition to the Democratic nominee elected by the Democratic primary. Having lost the primary, if he wants to oppose the Democratic nominee he must do it from the sidelines, if he wishes to remain a Democrat. His actions have removed himself from the party.
