Girl escapes after being held in cellar for 8 years
By Michael Leidig in Vienna

Natascha Kampusch (Austrian Police/AP)

AN AUSTRIAN girl held prisoner in a cellar for eight years was reunited with her parents last night after making a dramatic dash for freedom.

Police searching for a man suspected of kidnapping Natascha Kampusch and holding her prisoner said that the alleged kidnapper had committed suicide late last night by jumping in front of a train.

Natascha vanished on March 2, 1998, while walking to school in Vienna. She was 10 years old at the time. She reappeared yesterday after leaping out of a black BMW when it was stopped in a routine police roadcheck.

The BMW was caught in traffic in the Deutsch Wagram suburb of the Austrian capital. The delay had been caused by a police routine roadside check a short distance ahead.

Austrian television said that other motorists had raised the alarm when a girl ran from the car and was then seen apparently in some distress in the garden of a house where officers who came to investigate had found her.

2. And some Dick commentators are already asking
if she was held so long because she liked it and chose to stay. :grr:

The fact that he kept her under suck tight lock and key that the neighbors didn't even know about her should be enough to shut them up, but no, the sexist bullshit has to be injected into the reporting.
:nuke:

There are days I'd really like to hurt a few people.

3. It's the group that says when women are attacked, they're asking for it.
If you ever decide to hurt those people, give me a call. We'll tag-team. :P

6. and we can just tell them that they
were asking for it, so there should be no complaints.

9. It's funny that only oppressed groups are ever "asking"
for violence. It would be great if that same rationale could be used against the bashers, bigots and misogynists.

4. She kept a diary...
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-2328700,00.html

Hopefully she can make some money off this... I see books and movies in her future. Her life will never be what it should have been. Maybe a little money (or a lot) will help her along.

5. I hope she doesn't release that diary.
It's going to get nit-picked apart and people will make her regret anything she wrote in there that isn't lurid.

I hope she gets some great mental healthcare. I hope her family is able to help her rebuild her life. I wish her a lot of things, but a movie deal would be very low on the list.

I hope she will be okay. :(

8. I doubt anyone could be stopped from making a movie based on her story
It's done all the time. The names are changed but we always know who it's about. I'd rather see the truth come out than to see a Hollywood version.

Telling the story could be cathartic for her and assist in her healing. And it could help others become more aware of the few truly sick people we live among. It could save another child from this horror.

10. I hope you are right.
That would be a best-case scenario. After what she's lived through, she needs a lot of best-case scenarios.

14. Very true.
Living here in health-care hell I tend to forget that other countries actually take care of their people.
