"5th Anniversary WTC 9/11 Commemorative Coin" - Why does this bother me?

http://www.nationalcollectorsmint.com/product2.jsp?path=-1%7C1699&id=4689

I just saw an ad for this on TV, with poetic language and "America the Beautiful" playing in the background. It bothers me, and I'm not sure why.

Part of it is that ANY profiting from 9/11 seems flat WRONG, despite their $5 per coin going to 9/11 family charities.

Part of it is a sense of almost celebrating that horrible day. I can't put my finger on the difference between remembering it gravely, and sort of hyping it.

And part of it is the BushCo has done both of the above, and continues to.

What do you think of this "commemorative?" Does it bother you, or is it just me?

1. Profiteering off a national tragedy
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 01:41 PM by LynneSin
That's what I'm guessing. I know that's why it bugs me

I mean, you're telling me it costs $24.95 to make that coin?

Probably costs about $1 to make and was probably made in Taiwan

3. Because it's in extremely poor taste
Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American buying public.

23. Barry Goldwater Jr.

Interesting snippet:

<During his 14 years of SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY in the U.S. Congress, he was in the forefront of activities on issues that remain important to our citizens today; issues like energy and privacy. he authored the Solar Photo-Voltaic Energy Act and the Right to Privacy Act, among others. He served on the Committee on Science and Technology, the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, and the Joint Committee on Energy. He continues to promote conservation and ecological programs, energy efficiency, the right to privacy, and a return of the balance of power to the states and to the people, among other issues.>

Sounds more like a Democratthan a conservative Republican. Solar energy? Right to Privacy? Interesting indeed.

I find the WTC coin thing creepy, though.

7. Cashing in on 9/11. Lots of people are doing it
Bush and Cheney didn't waste any time doing it.

And so far two movies have come out, both did or are doing fairly well, and critics are too chickenshit to give them honest reviews.

8. Corporate America at it's finest. Profiteering off of the Dead.
I wonder if this comes from the 157 Billion dollars of Gold that was stolen in this mass murder/theft.

10. So after you pull up the towers
do little planes come and knock them down?

I dunno...the whole thing looks phallic to me. Kind of like the Florida State Capitol.

11. That will be worth alot some day.
It will be known to future generations as the end of the republic (kind of when Rome made the final shift from republic to Imperial Rome).

12. There's this entire commercialization
of everything, and this is a poor-taste example. No one is having any trouble remembering that day or what happened, and this commemorative coin just reeks of someone making a fast buck.

19. Here's another puke-inducing one

Description:
"George W. Bush, our 43rd President, has distinguished himself as a courageous leader and Commander in Chief. After the attacks of September 11, America was changed forever as President Bush declared war against terror and has made the advance of human freedom the priority of his Administration. In appreciation of his efforts, NCM has enhanced a genuine Brilliant Uncirculated U.S. Government Presidential Medal with 23.6 mg 24KT Gold."

The "advance of human freedom?!?" :puke:

22. He couldn't courageously pick his nose . . .
. . . much less lead a country. The only freedom he's advancing is that of Multi-National Conglomerates at the expense of foreign peoples and the poor and middle classes of Dumberica.

Is there a power vomit smilie, because I don't think the one we have unleashes enough in this instance.

21. That's what stuck out for me, too.
The silver was recovered from a vault under Ground Zero? Didn't it BELONG to somebody? What gives this outfit the right to use it & how did they come into posession of it?

14. Because it's crass and disrespectful to the dead
Something similar was tried two years ago with a commemorative Freedom Tower coin, where they tried to make a similar claim about silver (or was it gold?) harvested from the WTC's vault. Elliot Spitzer field suit against them and got them to stop (since they are a New York-based company.)
