Taller people may be smarter
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 06:44 PM by nini
but of course!! As a woman at 5'10" - I have to agree :D *insert :sarcasm: here since I forgot in the original post * Interesting though how image and self esteem play into this.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060825/ts_nm/economy_height_dc

NEW YORK (Reuters) - While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than their shorter counterparts, it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality -- tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged peers, a new study finds.

"As early as age three -- before schooling has had a chance to play a role -- and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests," wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The findings were based primarily on two British studies that followed children born in 1958 and 1970, respectively, through adulthood and a U.S. study on height and occupational choice.

Other studies have pointed to low self-esteem, better health that accompanies greater height, and social discrimination as culprits for lower pay for shorter people.

They got little noses

"HISTORY OF THE NBER
Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. The NBER is committed to undertaking and disseminating unbiased economic research among public policymakers, business professionals, and the academic community.

Over the years the Bureau's research agenda has encompassed a wide variety of issues that confront our society. The Bureau's early research focused on the aggregate economy, examining in detail the business cycle and long-term economic growth. Simon Kuznets' pioneering work on national income accounting, Wesley Mitchell's influential study of the business cycle, and Milton Friedman's research on the demand for money and the determinants of consumer spending were among the early studies done at the NBER."

There is going to be a correlation between intelligence and height because of nutrition. Stunted children are going to be stunted, in body, in mind, and in opportunity.

But, of course, not all -- or even most people -- who are short are stunted. Just enough to make the difference statistically significant (which does not mean substantial).

30. this fails to show causation
it's entirely possible that any "smarts" advantage taller people have is a result of height discrimination throughout their lives.

my own experience is that shorter people at least emphasize "smarts" to compensate, while taller people have an easier time at athletics and tend to focus less on studies.

It means I can stop pretending to be so damned smart all the time. It was really getting tiring, forming all those coherent thoughts and everything.

Sign me,

Five-Foot-Two / High IQ / To Case & Paxson / I Say F-You

P.S. Gee, too bad my 5'6" father -- the R&D guy who held a U.S. patent on a machining tool -- isn't alive to get a load of this load. I will, however, pass this story along to my 5'4" sister -- the one with the doctorate in genetics.

46. The findings were based primarily on two British studies
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 07:48 PM by depakid
that followed children born in 1958 and 1970, respectively, through adulthood and a U.S. study on height and occupational choice.

I'm not paying $5 to read their paper (I wouldn't pay $5 for the recent one about left handers making more money, either- LOL)- but I know which two studies that they were drawing their data from.

What those studies showed is that economists are very fond of making spurious connections!

Seriously though.

In the British studies, height was associated with better nutrition- which in turn was affected by socio-eonomic status- and particularly the occupation of the father.

Given Britain's fairly rigid class and social structure- these effects (called the social gradient of health) end up showing lifelong differences in "intelligence" an educational attainment (among other things).

Height per se, has very little- if anything- to do with it.

Ah, but then again- to be 6 foot 6 AND left handed.

104. I thought that it probably had something to do with nutrition
Although most children are fed enough, that is not always true now and certainly wasn't true in the past. Children that do not get enough nourishment will be shorter than if they had sufficient nourishment and may not develop as much neurologically either as well as social poverty issues. Although many well nourished children will be shorter than many malnourished children, if a malnourished child is 2-5 inches shorter than their potential height, on average nourished children will be taller and smarter.

106. You are right- yet it's actually much more than just nutritition
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 02:59 PM by depakid
it's an entire range of confounding factors involved with socio-economic status and a persons "station in life" or "placement" in society.

The 1958 British Birth cohort study found an entire chain of advantages vs. disadvantages that came into play- many of which were related to childhod growth rate and subsequent height- as well as "intelligence" and educational attainment.

These included things you might not think about- such as housing tenure, sleep disruprion, noise, lack of resourses or places to play creativey or study, social expectations, etc., etc.

This is why economists should stay out of the field of epidemiology.

It's beyond their competence and training.

LOL.

But, since the cat's out of the bag, we might as well come clean...

The study was actually made by us short people. We intentionally skewed the results to make you tall people THINK you were smarter. If it wasn't for those darned kids we would've gotten away with it.

at least do so accurately.

Furthermore, you are talking about a condition that is a relative rarity amongst the general population. That would seem to lend credence to my assertion that taking something found so rarely in society and making it the number one argument for proposing that height is the driver of those who intimidate, humiliate and dominate would be a completely ignorant proposal showing a complete lack of understanding of the concept itself. :hi:

This is yet another shit device. And I guess I'm not smart enough, even with a high IQ, simply because I come in at 5'1".

So why are men so much dumber than women? Really, guys are much easier to befuddle than women and don't say it's because I'm a woman that they let me get away with it. Once I turned fifty and had no sexual attraction anymore I found I could still befuddle the boys and most of my lady friends agree with me.

I'm a guy and am obviously much taller than the 5'5" shown on my drivers license.

115. Napoleon wasn't actually short, believe it or not. The belief is based on
a mistranslated measurement taken after his death. I believe the person doing the measuring used the French measurement in place of the English measurement or something to that effect, and the two areas didn't use the same "inch". Anyway- he got the reputation of being short, when he was actually about 5'6" (slightly taller than average for his time and place).

Weird, huh?

108. That's crap. I'm a teeny, tiny woman and I'm no dummy.
I had to skip a grade in school (a trait that's being passed onto my son, who, btw, will be tall given his father's genes), always had a high IQ, was always in accelerated and AP classes and won several scholarships and national academic awards in both high school and college.

Maybe the low self-esteem issue bothers shorter men, but, as a female, I find that being little makes me look younger - people are always mistaking me for being years younger than I am and certainly younger than my husband, who, in actuality, is three years younger than me.

I don't think height has anything to do with ability, intelligence and aptitude. After all, Albert Einstein wasn't very tall and look how smart he was. :)

As a short person aging gracefully, I no longer try to inject myself into situations where I'm with standing tall people. They talk over me and before I know it, I've just stepped outside the circle, because the tall people have taken a step forward to hear more clearly the tall person standing next to me. Someone wants to talk to me, they can sit next to me.

Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 03:42 PM by Marr
there are lots of indirect variables that could account for such a finding. Several are mentioned right there in the article, though they're blown off as 'old studies' for some reason.

A child who is short due to diet rather than genetics is obviously dealing with a different set of circumstances than a child with a healthy diet, for instance.

Anyway, I'd have to look at their methodology. I admit to harboring a bias here as a 5'6" man, but their findings seem unlikely to me.
