Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran called on his people to demonstrate against United States and Israeli interests. Khomeini denounced the American government as the "Great Satan" and "Enemies of Islam" for meddling in their affairs, including the occupation of Iran during World War II when Allied forces occupied Iran in order to neutralize it from joining the Axis and had forced the reigning monarch, Reza Shah, to abdicate in favor of his son, the more famous "Shah of Iran". Eight U.S. presidents provided the Shah with military and economic aid in exchange for a continuous oil supply. As far as the Iranian militants that siezed the hostages were concerned, they were simply answering their religious leader's call.

According to the journalist Steve Coll in his book 'Ghost Wars', Yousef mailed letters to various New York newspapers just before the attack, in which he three demands: an end to all US aid to Israel, an end to US diplomatic relations with Israel, and a demand for a pledge by the United States to end interference 'with any of the Middle East countries (sic) interior affairs'. He stated that the attack on the World Trade Center would be merely the first of such attacks if his demands were not met. In his letters Yousef admitted that the World Trade Center bombing was an act of terrorism, but that this was justified because 'the terrorism that Israel practices (which America supports) must be faced with a similar one.'

Al Qaeda’s list of grievances against the West included American participation in the first Gulf War, military operations in Somalia, and military involvement in Yemen. However, the United States presence in Saudi Arabia - a state that is home to a number of the holiest sites in Islam - was perhaps the focal point of al Qaeda’s anger. Permanent U.S. military installations in the region represented a lack of Saudi Arabian control over its territory and were thought to threaten the Muslim sacred cities of Mecca and Medina. Osama bin Laden believed that “the Americans were infidels and their garrisons propped up a corrupt, insufficiently Islamic Saudi elite.” As U.S. economic and political interests continued to create a greater presence in the Middle East, al Qaeda began targeting U.S. interests abroad.

In a 2004 video, apparently acknowledging responsibility for the attacks, bin Laden states that he was motivated by the 1982 Lebanon War, for which he held the U.S. partially responsible. In the video, bin Laden also claims that he wants to, "restore freedom to our nation," to "punish the aggressor in kind," and to inflict economic damage on America. He declared that a continuing objective of his holy war was to, "
America to the point of bankruptcy."<33> Bin Laden said, "We swore that America wouldn't live in security until we live it truly in Palestine. This showed the reality of America, which puts Israel's interest above its own people's interest. America won't get out of this crisis until it gets out of the Arabian Peninsula, and until it stops its support of Israel."

Pearl was kidnapped by a militant group calling itself The National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty. This group claimed Pearl was a spy, and sent the United States a range of demands, including the freeing of all Pakistani terror detainees, and the release of a halted U.S. shipment of F-16 fighter jets to the Pakistani government.
The common thread running through all of these items seems to be a result of United States and Israel policies with regard to Lebanon, Palestine, Iran and other Islamic groups borne of occupation and imprisonment of Muslims.
Edited to add: It would seem to me that if the US and Israel would simply adopt a new tact in dealing with their issues in the ME, everybody would be happy and getting along today.
