Pearl was kidnapped by a militant group calling itself The National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty. This group claimed Pearl was a spy, and sent the United States a range of demands, including the freeing of all Pakistani terror detainees, and the release of a halted U.S. shipment of F-16 fighter jets to the Pakistani government.
The common thread running through all of these items seems to be a result of United States and Israel policies with regard to Lebanon, Palestine, Iran and other Islamic groups borne of occupation and imprisonment of Muslims.
Edited to add: It would seem to me that if the US and Israel would simply adopt a new tact in dealing with their issues in the ME, everybody would be happy and getting along today.
