Biden says Del. can help him as a former 'slave state'
Do you think that the glue they used for Biden's,(D-MBNA), hair plugs a few years ago has damaged his critical thinking abilities?

Sen. Joseph Biden says he can hold his own in a 2008 presidential primary against Democratic contenders from the South, noting that his home state of Delaware was a "slave state."

Biden dismissed the notion that he was a "Northeastern liberal" who would have a poor showing in the South against other likely contenders such as Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

"Better than anybody else," Biden said, when asked on "Fox News Sunday" to rate his chances of winning Southern states.

"You don't know my state," he said. "My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state has the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a Northeast liberal state."

10. Actually, the southern Delaware has a strong Dixie mentality
Our own Mason-Dixon line is the canal. There is a big difference in attitude and way of life between Northern Delaware and Southern.

But I agree the statement wasn't the brightest.

7. You're right.
There aren't too many slave-owners left in the South. I think they moved North and became capitalists.

16. It's not because of where you're from per se....
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 12:34 PM by BlooInBloo
... It's because of the large percentage of hate-filled bigots who come from where you are from.

And I suppose it's also because of the alleged non-bigots who take a childlike glee in falsely declaring, over and over, racism is just as bad in the north.

But it isn't because of where you're from per se - it's the people.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong - I can't stand Biden either, and think that Biden's about as likely to help Dems get southern states as, well... not very likely - lol!

29. Racism IS
just as bad in the North. It's not all "white" racism, of course, although in the North there's plenty of that.

I've lived in both sections and I know of what I speak.

6. It's these kinds of comments
that are going to cost us the election this year.

Remeber Byrd's comments using the dreaded "n" word a while back? 2 to 1 we'l hear more and more about them as the election draws closer. Somehow, I don't think 'macaca" remarks will get the same play.

Speaking of which, what does 'macaca' mean? I've never heard the word before, and if I'd been on a quiz show and was asked the definition, I would have said it's an ice cream with lots of nuts.

Senator Dipshit(R-Hell) claimed he didn't know it was a slur but then it turns out his family is french speaking...

8. He's said a couple of really stupid things...
And since when did he become a "Northeastern LIBERAL?" That's a pretty liberal definition of "liberal."...And Delaware has the eighth largest black population? I have a hard time believing that.

it might be 8th. But not in terms of overall black population.

12. He was asked if his being a northeastern liberal would hurt him....
Edited on Mon Aug-28-06 12:27 PM by eleny
And he answered that he was from a southern state where slavery existed.

I'm not a Biden supporter and will not be voting for him in the primary. But it seems to me that FoxNews tried to paint him as a lib from the north by the way they asked the question and he clarified reality for them. They should have asked him if he identified more with northeastern libs even though he's from a southern state. But that wouldn't have served their purpose.

What bothers me most about Biden is his stand on the invasion and occupation of Iraq and support of the banking bill. The hair plugs and the ultra whitened teeth come in a distant second. He should spare us all and forget running for the presidency.

28. What bothers me
about this comment is that he seems to assume that Southerners will support him because maybe his ancestors owned slaves or something.

The utterly patronizing attitude of the comment is even worse than the racism of it. His campaign is dead in the water.

30. He missed the perfect opportunity to point how many libs live in the south
He bungled it completely. By going on the defensive, he invited FoxNews to outfox him. As far as I'm concerned, he never had a viable candidacy. And yes, he should drop out now. Dead in the water is an accurate description of his campaign.

Democratic politicians do not seem to be any more ept when speaking of racial matters than do Republicans. Of course, their policies are better, but their basic attitudes bother me somewhat.

20. Darn -
not only does Joe engage in creative resume construction, he single-handedly moves the Mason-Dixon line north of its historic location. Delaware did allow slavery. When the Civil War started there were about 1800 slaves, mostly in Sussex County in the Nanticoke river basin. Several proposals for freeing the slaves were put forward during the 1840s and 50s but none were adopted. Lincoln proposed that the federal government would compensate Delaware slaveholders for their slaves and actually met with Delaware's largest slaveholder, Benjamin Burton, (he had 28 slaves) to discuss the proposal. Burton felt that if the price were fair it would be ok. But nothing came of the idea. Slavery in Delaware officially ended in December, 1865 with the adoption of the 13th Amendment, as the Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the Confederacy. By that time there were only a few hundred slaves left, most males having escaped to free states and enlisted in black regiments.

27. Biden will never be president
When he ran in the primaries in, what, 1992 (or was in 88?), the talk was all about how he cheated in college. The GOP will never let that go.

He's a good guest on Bill Maher's show or whatever-he's well-spoken and even funny at times. But he should stick to the Senate.
