Jung Chang and Jon Halliday have explored the life of former Chinese premier Mao Tse-tung, as well as the history of 20th century China in their book, “Mao: The Unknown Story.” The authors write that Mao’s rise to power and his communist strategy had less to do with personal ideology than with political ambition and with his being at the right place at the right time. They also examine his personal friendship with former Soviet leader Josef Stalin, a relationship that dated back to the 1920s. “Mao” is the result of five years of research and includes interviews with each living American president who had interacted with Mao.

Jung Chang is the author of "Wild Swans" and a former member of the Chinese Red Guard during her youth. She later became the first person from the People's Republic of China to receive a doctorate from a British university. Jon Halliday is married to Jung Chang and is the author or editor of eight additional books.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
John Perkins
Direct Video link - http://www.booktv.org/ram/publiclives/0106/btv011506_2b.ram

From 1971 to 1981 John Perkins worked as a chief economist for Chas. T. Main, a Massachusetts-based international strategic consulting firm. During this time Mr. Perkins said his job was to trick developing countries into taking enormous loans from the World Bank in order to construct or repair their domestic infrastructure. These loans were given with the understanding that these countries would then use those loans to pay U.S. corporations to complete these constructing and engineering projects. The author writes that when these developing countries were eventually unable to pay off these sizable debts, the United States, World Bank, or IMF would step in and control the country's security arrangements and budgetary structure.

John Perkins is the author of six books including "The World Is As You Dream It" and "Psychonavigation." He is the founder of the non-profit organization Dream Change, a grass roots movement intent on raising consciousness and creating sustainable lifestyles throughout the world.

It looks at racial solidarity throughout history, examining its strengths and shortcomings, while also defending a modified version of racial solidarity. The author makes the case that it is possible to defend certain aspects of racial solidarity as a new approach to its anti-essentialist foundations, while also pursuing racial inequality and the defeat of racism.

Tommie Shelby is a social sciences professor at Harvard University and teaches in the University's Department of African and African American Studies.

Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink
David Margolick

In “Beyond Glory,” author David Margolick recounts the heavyweight fights between African American Joe Louis and German Max Schmeling in New York in 1936 and 1938, a time of great racial tension. He discusses the impact the fights had on things like racism and international relations. Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate -- The Essential Guide for Progressives
George Lakoff

George Lakoff, author of “Don’t Think of an Elephant: Know n:Your Values and Frame the Debate--The Essential Guide for Progressives”, speaks at the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco about the elemental differences between conservatives and progressives. Mr. Lakoff traces the differences in political ideology between the parties to differences in the idealized family model. He states that conservatives follow a “strict father” model while progressives follow a “nurturing parent” model. Mr. Lakoff bases his findings on research he has conducted as a linguistics professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The author uses the differences in these two models to “re-frame” reactions to many current issues, such as Hurricane Katrina, Terri Schiavo, abortion, gay marriage, and the recent Supreme Court nominations.

George Lakoff's books include "Metaphors We Live By" and "Moral Politics." Mr. Lakoff is a linguistics professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has conducted lengthy research regarding the concept of the embodied mind as it relates to mathematics. The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl
Timothy Egan

In the 1930s parts of America experienced blinding dust storms - millions of tons of dirt blowing across the vast expanses of flat land. This is the subject of New York Times reporter Timothy Egan's new book, "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl." In it, the author chronicles the sacrifices made by families living in the Dust Bowl. Nearly 250,000 people were displaced in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado dealt with the suffocating dust storms that ravaged nearly one hundred million acres of the America's Great Plains.

Timothy Egan has written four books, including "The Good Rain: Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest." He was part of the New York Times reporting team who received the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for work exploring racial attitudes throughout America. He is currently a national enterprise reporter for the New York Times.
