Just when I naively thought everyone was on board w/ existence of
global warming, my husband tells me that a fundie at work still believes it is a "commie conspiracy". This man isn't generally ignorant. He listens to NPR, love rock and role music, a very technical job, and has a huge family. One of his teenagers loves studying meteorology. But to him, the world is 6000 years old and practically flat. And global warming isn't real.

3. Of course.
God put that fossil there to test his faith.

5. "And mankind lived concurrently with dinosaurs" is the change
in their story when they finally couldn't deny the existance of prehistoric lifeforms. They are revisionists in their own beliefs.

2. I'm with Al Gore's interpretation of events. I think if global warming
were not real, the Bush administration would not have turned their noses up at the Kyoto Accord.

Their refusal to support that Accord proves to me that global warming is the genuine deal.

4. It freaks me out
that I know people like that also. Esp. the 6000 year old earth thing.

I can sort of see how people could be conned about global warming - what with Exxon and all their propaganda (they like to think that the world "always" has it's ups and downs or something )- but I don't see how the 6000 year old earth people think that they can explain away almost all of science - as if virtually all University Professors and most scientists are all "communists" that are part of a conspiracy trying to take over the world. gaaaaah.

7. And yet if they get sick, they get the best of nuclear medicine to
help cure them, but it was all "a miracle". No credit to science except the Godly dedication of the doctor.

8. The issue isn't whether "Global Warming" is real...
We simply don't have the data to know whether the Earth is going through a cyclical warming phase or not. It's silly to say that we're the sole cause of increased global temperatures.

...but that's not the issue...

Our existence on the planet is facilitated by maintaining approximately the same global temperatures that we have now. "Natural warming trend" or not, we KNOW that some of the things we do contribute to higher global temperatures. The Earth may be getting warmer of its own accord...but we KNOW that we're doing things that worsen the situation.

There are only two possibilities. Either we're creating "global warming" all by ourselves or the planet is going through a natural warming phase and we're accelerating the process.

Either way, doing what we can to minimize the effects prolongs our existence on this planet. That's the only issue and it's irrefutable.

9. Nope, sorry...everyone is not on board. I have a Republican
friend who USED to bash his wingnut fundie BIL for not believing in Global Warming. Now, just a few short years later, my friend says "it's all a big scam by Wall Street to make money."

Now my friend and your husband's fundie co-worker can't BOTH be "right" in their "wrongness", but damned if they both aren't Very, Very wrong.

It's an uphill fight we're waging.
