Saddam forced to watch himself in SouthPark movie
Saddam's cartoon capers Monday August 28, 08:11 AM

Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is being made to watch his appearance in cult cartoon South Park while he is behind bars.

The deposed leader on trial in Iraq was featured in the movie spin-off as the lover of the devil. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut featured Hussein and Satan attempting to take over the world together.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said US Marines guarding the former dictator during his trial for genocide were making him watch the movie "repeatedly".

"I have it on pretty good information from the Marines on detail in Iraq that they showed him the movie last year. That's really adding insult to injury. I bet that made him really happy," Stone said.

4. If true, this is childish bullshit
Given Saddam's limited English skills and his obvious mental fortitude, this is a waste of time.

12. That is a great point
see my post #11 right below.

With Saddam's limited English and his innate inner strength, this is an exercise in amateurville.

I have been involved in a little of this sort of thing.

I am always amazed that we think that what might drive us over the edge will work on someone from a totally different culture.

16. I am with bananas (#9). I cannot understand most of the dialogue
in that episode.

I really doubt that Hussein caught any of it.

And you can bet that if we translated it that it was totally unintelligible.

I certainly didn't intend to imply that you "thought it would work".

25. Feh, Bush doesn't appear in Team America
TA satirises gung-ho American militarism, to be sure, but Matt and Tre's utter reluctance to tackle Bush himself is pathetic. Whenever they do show him on SP, it's this grey little guy who bears absolutely no resemblance to the real thing - interesting that the only way to show Bush in a positive or even neutral light is to basically pretend that he's a completely different person. M&T, who obviously consider themselves satirists of some sort, should be ashamed at their cowardice.

And I'm a 10-year South Park fan.

34. Why do they need to attack Bush personally?
I think its far more poignant to go after the gung-ho militarism, the self-inflated arrogance and one-eyedness of the American psyche. All of which have been manipulated by Bush et al. I respect them more after TA because they tackled some issues that the people who just slag Bush completely miss.

35. I see your point, but
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 05:17 AM by kiki
it's not just a matter of attacking him "personally". This is someone whose every public action is like a 100-foot neon sign advertising the fact that he is utterly incapable of doing his job, so to present him as "just another harmless li'l president" as M&T do is naive at best and deceptive at worst. Not to mention the fact that their episode with Al Gore picked on and magnified every tiny little flaw in Gore's personality that the corporate media could invent - and yet Bush is "Mr Normal".

And of course, M&T have remained completely silent on the Bush admin's policies as well, and often parrot the most idiotic MSM talking points. Their Hurricane Katrina episode, for example, took the angle of "Hey, it's complicated, we'll never know who was really responsible, let's stop playing the blame game". Very fucking convenient if the guy you're too terrified to criticise is the one who is 100% to blame.

36. I see where you're coming from.
I haven't seen the episodes you're referring to. But really, playing the blame game *is* pointless. People are dead. You don't fix houses or get people food by pointing fingers. Facetious point I know, but still, perhaps a point they were trying to make?

23. What's the problem?
Yeah, maybe this is a little childish, but it's still pretty funny. I hope they're also making him watch Citizen Kaine, the Vagina Monologues, and really bad children's cartoons. I kinda figured that since they're in Iraq and bootleg DVD's there being what they are, they probably had a copy of the South Park movie with some Arabic subtitles at least.
Parker and Stone are great, btw.

We should hold ourselves to much much higher standards in our treatment of prisoners. We should lead by good example not be the bullies of the world.

31. Right . . .
And showing him a movie where he is made fun of and ridiculed makes us a bully? Look I would bet that Saddam is one of the most comfortable prisoners in the world, in any prison system, and if this is the most Saddam has to complain about in regards to his imprisonment then he's doin' fine (considering why he's in prison in the first place).
Again, how is this low-standard treatment? It's not like Clockwork Orange where they're making him watch. Get a grip. This is childish, but it's also harmless.
