2 Episcopal priests to join hour-long picket of "Book of Daniel"
Contact: Adam McManus, AM 630, KSLR Radio, adam@takeastand.net; 210-344-8481 ext 132 until 3:00 p.m. central, 210-340-9585 between 3 and 6 p.m. central and 210-373-7499 after 6 p.m. central

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Jan. 20 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Two San Antonio Episcopal priests, both of whom will wear their liturgical collars, will join Christian radio talk show host Adam McManus in studio at 5 p.m. central for an hour on Friday, January 20, 2006 to articulate why they will join McManus and picket the anti-Christian NBC TV show “The Book of Daniel” at NBC affiliate WOAI-TV4 tonight from 9-10 p.m.

McManus broadcasts his talk show “Take A Stand” over AM 630, KSLR weekday afternoons from 3-6 p.m. in San Antonio, Austin and Houston. He is urging his listeners to join him and the Episcopal priests tonight in a picket from 9-10 p.m. central.

The hour-long picket will occur in front of WOAI-TV4 at 1031 Navarro Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205. . Media are welcome to cover the talk show segment at 5 p.m. in studio at 9601 McAllister Freeway, Suite 1200, 12th floor. A mult-box is available. Or you can listen live at http://www.kslr.com

The Rev. CB "Chip" Harper, Rector of All Saints Anglican Church on 11122 Link Drive in San Antonio, said, “’The Book of Daniel’ is a sad excuse for entertainment and misrepresents Christians and the Christian faith in a way that, I suspect, if applied to any other group, would constitute defamation. What I really object to, though, is the premise it proffers that Christians have no victory in life. After all, a real relationship with Jesus doesn’t give us a ‘get out of jail free’ card for life’s troubles. It just empowers us to defy them -- all in the Lord’s Peace. ‘Daniel’ seems to deny all that while claiming it’s a show about Christianity and Christians, when it’s clearly not. What’s the matter with presenting a reality-based drama that is has a basis in truth?

And Rev Eric Fenton, Associate Rector at Christ Episcopal Church on 510 Belknap Place in San Antonio, said, “The transformational power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the hope we have as Christians is mocked and denied in ‘The Book of Daniel.’ The impotent, ‘happy-jack’ Jesus character is not the one I call my Lord and Savior. I watched it once and that was enough.”

McManus said, “Christians are sick and tired of network executives signing off on programs which mock God and belittle Christian values. That’s why I was delighted to see that three of the five companies whose ads were placed on ‘The Book of Daniel’ indicated that they would refrain from future episodes. Those former sponsors include Chattem – producer of Gold Bond and Icy Hot, Combe Inc. -- maker of Just For Men hair color and H&R Block. Sadly, Mazda and Burlington Coat Factory remain as the buzzard buyers of this Christian bigotry.”

13. All of the above?
I'm slightly confused by your question. All I saw above was some pastor getting upset about a TV show, so he picketed. Nothing wrong with that -- if you get pissed you go and picket, make a scene, hold a rally or whatever.

What I object to is your apparent generalization of Christians ("they"), saying that none of them have stood by for the past six years:

>> They won't picket the war or torture and the ENTIRE INJUSTICE OF THE PAST SIX YEARS BUT THEY WILL PICKET A TV SHOW!?!?!?!?! FUCKERS!

Obviously its not so. For all you know, those 2 Episcopal priests were at every anti-war rally in the past 3 years. So I dunno.

the Baptist minister who just got arrested for soliciting sex at a gay resort on the air. And then ask when he's gonna feature the victims of child sexual abuse at the hands of evangelical and catholic clergy. . .I wanna hear the indignation, Adam. . .give it to us...the utter offensive christian indignation of these real-life acts...

Ohhh...I forgot. They don't deal in reality.

And how about someone living down there listen to the radio station and write down the names of all their advertisers...I mean, he's a broadcaster and I find those stations often quite offensive, especially in the manner in which they portray gay Americans. Why can't we demand that their programming be cancelled as offensive and persecuting too? What makes this religious nutcase and bigot exempt from public scrutiny?

6. Anti-Christian?
Are you kidding me? If anything, that show is about the only truly Christian (as in - following Jesus' example - not just proseletyzing) program on network television.

And I'm Christian and didn't find anything offensive. I loved the bishop woman who asked the priest for stress pills. *snicker* The Jesus they had is more of how I would picture him. Like your friend and real laid back.

7. And no one picketed "Signs"
for its anti-Christian views all through that movie.

I haven't seen "Book of Daniel" so after reading the article, I still don't get what their beef is.

By the way, for those of you who haven't seen "Signs", it's a disappointing movie with a premise about crop circles and aliens and wound up being about a disillusioned ex-priest being blackmailed by god back into the priesthood. Blackmail methods: terrorize billions of people, kill millions of people. Follow the cause and effect relationships between all the life-altering events and you'll see what I mean. Somehow the same kind of people picketing "Book of Daniel" probably urged all their friends to see "Signs".

We live in a weird world.

28. I was always suprised that they didn't have fits over 'Joan of Arcadia'
It was a show that God appeared to a teenage girl, always in a mortal form. Some shows God was a Black woman, sometimes a child, and once was a gay man.

I find it funny what *they* get so freaked out over. Personally, I wish "Book of Daniel" had chosen a brown man to play Jesus. I mean if they are trying to portray Jesus as thought he was, it would have been more accurate if he was Black or MEern.

8. Sigh
Should we picket TBN and boycott its advertisers for denigration of gays, women, atheists, people of non-Christian religions, etc.?

Should we picket networks and boycott its advertisers of the myriad sitcoms that have brainless slut characters, who perpetuate the notion that women are nothing more than vapid sex machines?

And what of those shows where blacks are frequently criminals, Middle-Easterners are terrorists (or convenience store owners), and Asians do nothing but serve Asian food (as if there is no other profession for them). Should we picket those networks and boycott those advertisers?

What the hell is it with these fundie wingnuts that they have to control everything except themselves? :banghead:

10. hmm...and who exactly appointed these people the
spokespersons for the entire christian religion? There are plenty of christians who don't find the program offensive, including MOST Episcopalians. . .so what is up with this faux nonsense, anyway?

And why is it the same...the SAME groups of people who didn't utter one peep about the criminal child sexual abuse coverup with the Catholic Church, pursed their lips together when that Baptist minister and official was arrested for soliciting sex from a police officer at a gay resort, and put their hands over their ears every time another one of their wacky followers gets caught looking at child porn, are arrested for beating their children, or, in that case in Florida, where the man killed his three-year-old son from repeated beatings to "toughen" him up so he wouldn't grow up to become "gay?"

Just ONCE I would like someone to ASK these people WHY they aren't picketing the churches where these people attended or ministered - why they aren't issuing moral calls to arms over these things...instead of this constant whining because they think they have to force the rest of us to adhere to their beliefs? I fail to see how they can, after the repeated reports of the criminal activities of their own flock, claim to be "offended" by depictions of fictional characters who aren't doing half the stuff these people associate with in real life.

And as for Rev. Harper...hon, religion invented defamation. And once again, someone needs to read the state constitution to you guys so you understand quite clearly that the right to worship according to conscience doesn't mean everyone worships according to YOUR conscience. So take your faux indignation, your commitment to religious tyranny, and your bogus whiny-ass complaints to the gates of heaven and see if your Maker gives a rat's ass about this television program.

This looks more and more like it is as faux and ridiculous as the "War on Christmas" nonsense. And the rest of us should figure out by now that once this target is completed, they move along to the NEXT target, and the NEXT, and the NEXT. . .and that there will be no end to their faux indignation until every one of us has given up our rights to accommodate whatever whim the minister has issued for the day.

The neo-cons are not going to replace political correctness with religious correctness. . .the same arguments they are using to whine about PC behavior applies even more easily to religious freedom and expression.

11. The impotent, ‘happy-jack’ Jesus character is not the one I call my Lord a
I love that quote. . .guess what, Rev baby....maybe that happens to be the Jesus character that I CHOOSE to worship - so shove it up your...patootie, Padre. Turn off your damned set until Sunday morning, where you can watch all the wingnut preacher hours that offend MY christian beliefs.

Maybe that's what some savvy people should be doing there - they should be picketing the "christian" radio station and proclaiming that, since it is likely owned by the American "Family" Association, it is broadcasting the gospel of Satan himself and desperately subscribing to a policy of religious bigotry against all good and righteous churches.

Talk about christian bigotry. . .sheesh. These people have no respect for anyone's right to worship in any manner that we choose. Dammit - if I lived there I'd gather up every tacky plastic Jesus, spray paint the stupid radio station's doors with a surprise weeping Madonna stain, and block their butts from walking in or out of my "sacred" discovery.

I watched the show and I think it's really cute and it deals with issues of today. I'm tired of living in a police state. They can do this if they want but there are other issues that are more important. Say oh helping the Katrina victims and other poverty issues? I guess they don't own a remote.
