9/11: Press for Truth: help with the new 9/11 documentary!

Hi, Paul Thompson here, author of the Harper Collins book Terror Timeline. There's a new documentary coming out in early September called "9:11 Press for Truth." I have a sizeable role in it as an interview subject, but it's mostly about the Jersey Girls and other 9/11 victim's relatives and their quest to find the truth about what happened on 9/11.

This film is really good, and I'm not just saying that because I'm in it. Randi Rhodes on Air America saw an advanced copy recently and called it "phenomenal." This film is not arguing any "conspiracy theory," as it doesn't really push any theory about what happened. Rather, it seeks to prove the more basic point that the Bush administration's actions were disastrous before 9/11, during 9/11, and after 9/11. Before you worry about the "why" you first have to establish the basic facts, and unfortunately too many Americans still see the death of 3,000 people on 9/11 as Bush's great "triumph."

This film is the ideal tool to enlighten your friends and family who don't know much or are misinformed about 9/11. While we here at DU are generally well informed about politics, most people are not. Recent polls show that half of Americans still think Saddam Hussein is somehow connected to 9/11 and a third of Americans can't even correctly guess what year 9/11 took place in! The makers of this film are hoping that more than just the "usual suspects" will see the film and that it can reach the people who most need to see it. I've seen this film with some apolitical people who believed the "no one could have expected planes as weapons" official story, and they were blown away. It's short (84 minutes), it moves at a good pace, and it has an emotional tug.

I'm hoping that you all here at DU can help spread the word. One possibility is house parties. The documentary "Outfoxed" was an unlikely hit largely because of Internet word of mouth and house parties. Another is if people can help us contact journalists (including film reviewers) and radio/TV hosts to get them to cover the release of the film. We have a number of people, including myself and some of the 9/11 victims' relatives, who are able to speak about the film in the coming weeks.

The DVD will be coming out September 5, and there will be about 20 theaters having a limited number of showings around the same time. Poke around the website mentioned above to preorder the DVD, see if the film is playing near you, and also sign up to host a house party.

As 9/11 relative Mindy Kleinberg says in the movie trailer, "We are asking you, America, to stand behind us." I hope people here at DU can stand up for this effort too. The Bush administraton's popularity rests on the myth of their 9/11 "triumph." Without that myth and the fear of more attacks, they have nothing left to stand on.

EDIT: I just called my local independent theatre and asked them if they plan on showing it. I pointed them to

No plans for that any time soon. There's so much that I want to add to it before I publish an update, I'll probably wait until 2007. By then, the book will probably come out in a different form because it would be too big for a single book. Maybe it would be two books or maybe it would have to be slimmed down.

How can they charge so little? Unfortunately, that would hurt our organization. If people buy the DVD through Cooperative Research, then some of the money will go to our organization (the link to buy the DVD at the Press for Truth site goes to the CCR site to help us out).

28. I'm not really sure Paul, but here are my conjectures...

I have to believe that legally the film given the production/distribution rights has a wholesale price that they've set up for the film that retailers like DeepDiscountDVD (or perhaps even your Cooperative Research group) pay. I have to believe that those owning the rights will get the fundamental same royalties, etc. no matter which entity sells it. On the other hand, The Cooperative Research group that is selling it may also be profiting separately after they get the DVDs wholesale. Not sure of what their mission is and where they use the money they get from the markup over the wholesale price they pay to those making the DVDs. That was the focus of my question. If they were just another reseller and though perhaps specializing more in progressive DVDs than DeepDiscountDVD was, I was wanting to make sure that I didn't hurt those supporting our cause by advocating another place to get it cheaper.

I think in some cases, some of these firms like DeepDiscountDVD.com sell some films at a loss to attract other business to their site (people buying other DVDs where they make a profit). If that is the case, then it is they that take the hit, and then it is good to try and take advantage of the cheaper price if they are the one that's paying the difference. If they get heavier demand, perhaps they will raise the price and raise the amount of promotion they do on selling the DVD too.

I guess you just have to weigh whether it makes for better results to get more profit per unit to the right people, or having it cheaper with less profit but more people able to buy it. I guess this one reseller doesn't seem to be making too much money themselves on it, so in that respect, is a good place to get it if we're concerned about the middlemen getting too much money off of it.

Send me a PM if you have more concerns that you'd like me to reflect in these sorts of posts. I'd like to see more progressive DVDs out there (like the other ones listed here too) and more people watching all of them, and certainly 9/11 Press for Truth has the quality to lead the way of that. But I want something where it builds the industry to produce more good films like this, not sap the profits out of it so you guys can't make more in the future.

I wonder if we could actually get your groups more money by buying it from DeepDiscountDVD.com and donating money to a group you list that would perhaps put more money into your hands than in the post office's hand or the like. I think retailers like DeepDiscountDVD have some arrangements with the post office where less money goes to them than might in the case of doing a transaction on the site you list? I'd donate the $5 difference I had to a site you'd recommend here and I'd still be coming out ahead, and hopefully you and the folks with the film could too.

Just to point people to buy it from the CCR site. The people who are making the DVD are activists and have made a deal where we can buy the DVDs at cost to sell through the website. So we can use the money to cover our budget shortfall. However, we get nothing if people buy it through Amazon or anything else. Even your proposed idea wouldn't compete.

But if people are so strapped that they can only afford a version that's $10 instead of $15, I'd rather they get it there than not get it at all.

I think I've discovered a lot on both topics that has never been put together before.

There was an early version of the documentary that went into Ptech some, from what I understand. In particular, the directors were interested in the way the government was able to bury the Ptech story, since a lot of the movie is about the failure of the media to cover the 9/11 story properly. But in going from 3 plus hours down to an hour and a half, that (and a ton of other great stuff) was cut. Happily though, they plan to put out a greatly expanded DVD version next year with all that extra footage.
