Flowers for Max Cleland UPDATE
Hi all - yesterday there were a couple of threads voicing concern for Max Cleland who was reported to have started treatment for PTSD. And some posters thought sending him flowers as we did for Helen Thomas would be a great thing.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2000714

I fished around looking for information on whether this would be welcomed and where we could send flowers - was eventually directed to Patriot Project and asked them if they could help. Here is the reply:

Actually he's fine. Story was not 'new' but an ongoing treatment that
got mis-spun

but I will pass on your good wishes and concern

it was very good of you to write

James

Please keep this kicked so all can see so we won't have duplication of effort?

1. Dunno, flowers aren't much of a guy thing
He might wonder who died and hope it's not him.

Maybe amassing a huge donation to a nonprofit veterans' outreach program might be a better idea.

2. Not so sure flowers are not a 'guy thing'
but I do know that many, from both genders, find that flowers remind them of funerals... which is one of the reasons I asked if this would be welcomed by him!

I know there are a few guys on this site who have mentioned to me that they are quite active gardeners... careful of those limiting stereotypes! :hi:

19. Some guys DO like flowers although they won't ask for them
Ex-Sig Other always enjoyed having flowers while he was in hospital.
Cheered him up, made him feel cared for, he said.

9. Mis-spun? That is about all you need to know about the MSM

I thought that the timing was odd all along (just the day before he was on "Real Time" and was laughing has butt off.) I wonder if there is anything more sinister going on a little message to keep his head down and stay off tv or else.

10. We could donate to a veterans' hospital in his honor.
That was discussed in the LBN thread.

11. We could do that...
thought I would see what the general response would be to the above.

I talked with Helderheid via pm about how she did the flowers for Helen. If we keep it simple, it would be a great positive boost for Cleland, for the vets, and for those here on DU who participate ... there is so little positive news this year!

14. Well, color me suspicious
Actually he's fine. Story was not 'new' but an ongoing treatment that got mis-spun

With all the democratic vets running for office this fall, wonder if this is some little nasty Rove thang to make folks "wonder" if vets are stable. Wasn't this one of the little nasty tricks Rove pulled on McCain before when McCain was in B*shit's way?

Another idea instead of flowers -- how about an e-card to Max signed by as many DUers as possible, thanking him for all he's done for America?

15. That theory would explain
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 07:31 PM by rosesaylavee
why they are 'reporting' it now. Good catch. I hadn't thought of that.

As for e-card, he would have to tell us his email for that to happen - otherwise not sure how to make it happen. I would guess he knows we are concerned as I bet I am not the only one who tried to get hold of him from DU today.

17. I met Max a few years ago at a pro-Kerry rally, and glad to hear it's
not a new issue, but will be praying for a good outcome for his treatment.
And flowers? Bet he would have loved them. Many men are into gardening and growing things, and I would be willing to bet that Max would have loved the gesture AND the flowers, knowing what they were meant to convey :-)

18. Thanks - I bet
news has reached him that we were set to send him flowers and that may be all we can give him at this point... good will, prayers, well-wishes and our respect for his work for this country.
