Why Won't The Media Touch This Book?

An email from Mark Crispin Miller
Regarding his new book Fooled Again Bush/Cheney stole their re-election in 2004.

Bush/Cheney stole their re-election in 2004.

They stole it not just in Ohio, but all throughout the USA, from coast to coast.

They stole it not by using any single ploy, but through a stealthy combination of computerized vote theft, bureaucratic monkey business, systematic shortages of viable equipment and old-fashioned dirty tricks, including rampant bullying, disinformation and obstructionism.

Such foul play was not apparent "on both sides" in the 2004 election, but was committed mainly by the Bush Republicans.

The evidence is both abundant and precise--and it's all here in Fooled Again.

"This second heist of the White House is one of the great untold stories of our time - even though it was largely carried out in plain sight. Miller performs the simple but increasingly rare act of journalism and gathers a mountain of overwhelming evidence from publicly available material. This is no "conspiracy theory" stitched together from anonymous sources, strained inferences and dark innuendo, but a solid case based on official records, sworn testimony, eyewitness accounts, news reports - and the Bushists' own words."Those words were published in an excellent review of Fooled Again that will come out tomorrow--in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Also tomorrow, a number of Web sites will be posting a review of Fooled Again by Paul Craig Roberts, who was Assistant Treasury Secretary under Ronald Reagan. A genuine conservative, Roberts is unafraid to read the evidence and face reality:

"This second heist of the White House is one of the great untold stories of our time - even though it was largely carried out in plain sight. Miller performs the simple but increasingly rare act of journalism and gathers a mountain of overwhelming evidence from publicly available material. This is no "conspiracy theory" stitched together from anonymous sources, strained inferences and dark innuendo, but a solid case based on official records, sworn testimony, eyewitness accounts, news reports - and the Bushists' own words."

Those words were published in an excellent review of Fooled Again that will come out tomorrow--in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Also tomorrow, a number of Web sites will be posting a review of Fooled Again by Paul Craig Roberts, who was Assistant Treasury Secretary under Ronald Reagan. A genuine conservative, Roberts is unafraid to read the evidence and face reality:

"Miller describes considerably more election fraud than voting machines programmed to count a proportion of Kerry votes as Bush votes. Voters were disenfranchised in a number of ways. Miller reports incidences of intimidation of, and reduced voting opportunities for, poorer voters who tend to vote Democrat....

"The outcome of the 2004 presidential election has always struck me as strange. Although Kerry was a poor candidate and evaded the issue most on the public's mind, by November of 2004 a majority of Americans were aware that Bush had led the country into a gratuitous war on the basis either of incompetence or deception. By November 2004 it was completely clear that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction and that Bush had rushed to war. People were concerned by the changing rationales that Bush was offering for going to war. Moreover, the needless war was going badly and the results bore no relationship to the rosy scenario painted at the time of the invasion. It seems contrary to American common sense for voters to have reelected a president who had failed in such a dramatic way."

Roberts--a former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal, and a former contributing editor for National Review--concludes with a warning that the Founding Fathers would appreciate:

"Miller directs our attention to Bush's high-handed treatment of dissenters. If electronic voting machines programmed by private Republican firms remain in our future, dissent will become pointless unless it boils over into revolution. Power-mad Republicans need to consider the result when democracy loses its legitimacy and only the rich have anything to lose."

Despite its wealth of evidence--meticulously documented in 57 pages of detailed endnotes--and despite the standing of its author (Miller is an NYU professor with a solid global reputation), Fooled Again has been pointedly ignored by the national media.

There have been no national reviews of Fooled Again.

No network or cable TV show would have the author on to talk about the book.

NPR has refused to have him on. Even shows that Miller has appeared on in the past, and more than once ("The Connection," "On the Media," "Talk of the Nation"), have refused to him on to talk about this book.

Only one daily newspaper--the Florida Sun-Sentinel--has published a review.

WHYY, the NPR affiliate in Philadelphia, recently refused to broadcast paid ads for the book, offering several different and unlikely explanations.

Aside from C-SPAN, Air America and Pacifica, no national media would have the author on to tell his fellow-citizens about his findings.

Those few reviews of Fooled Again that have appeared were mostly positive: Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, The Florida Sun-Sentinel, The Chicago Reader, The Baltimore Chronicle and other publications have all stressed the book's importance and the soundness of its evidence. (Fooled Again is certainly the only book in history to be highly praised by both The Christian Century and Hustler!) In short, the media would seem to have buried Fooled Again not because of any weakness in the book itself, but for political reasons above all.

Right now the very soul of our democracy is at unprecedented risk. The president is openly contemptuous of the very system that the Founding Fathers put in place. He seeks to rule regardless of what Congress and the people want, does all he can to silence the free press, has recklessly subjected millions of Americans to government surveillance, and demands the right to bomb and torture other peoples as the spirit moves him.

And all of this goes on with little protest from the Democratic Party, which now behaves not like the patriotic opposition but merely as a bunch of bystanders afraid to speak out loud and clear against the Bush administration's un-American activities.

At this moment, it is crucial that we openly discuss the likelihood that this administration was not duly re-elected in 2004, any more than it was properly elected in 2000. That national debate must take place now, so that the people understand that their democracy had been subverted--and, even more important, so that we can begin to talk about electoral reform in these United States as soon as possible. The crucial democratic conversation won't take place until the scandal of the last election finally resonates; and that is what impelled Mark Crispin Miller to write Fooled Again. His fellow-citizens deserve no less than to be told what's in this deeply edifying book.

Mark Crispin Miller is a seasoned and effective interviewee, who has appeared on many news programs both in the US and abroad, including The PBS News Hour, Frontline, The O'Reilly Factor, Washington Journal, Democracy Now! and Bill Moyers's The Public Mind.

1. Simple........
it's not "news-worthy". :eyes: "News-worthy" meaning; it would totally fuck up our campaign to make "W" look like a real president. "News-worthy" meaning; we're too damned lazy and incompetent to research the story. "News-worthy" meaning; the Corporate media not wanting to harm bush's image because he's giving us tremendous tax breaks.

I'm sure there's a host of other "news-worthy" definitions, feel free to add your own.

Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 01:06 PM by sfexpat2000
a political reporter and a friend in another town who writes book reviews for a major CA paper.

Sort of stumped about who else we could send it to.

When Okrent was Public Ed at the NYTs, he promised that the Times *would* report on election fraud if more came to light. :eyes: Well, he's gone, but the NYTs needs to honor that promise.

Maybe someone (who is not me) could send the Public Editor the op? public @ nytimes. com . It can't be me because I already raised hell with them and would not help Mark.

On edit: ixion, see my #32 for the precise promise made to report on this by NYTs. ef

yeah, it would be nice to see them live up to their promises, but the NYT has fallen far from grace in the past few years, so I'm skeptical.

We'll see, though. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. :-)

6. A good plan B
is to try and push this in the British media.

TV stations such as BBC2 and Channel4 are the best bets ("The Power of Nightmares" was on BBC2) plus newspapers like The Guardian/Observer, The Independent and the Mirror.

I would like to send this book to all of our Democratic represenatives in congress with a note.

"Don't bother to spend money running in another election until we have an actual vote that counts. READ THIS BOOK."

Even if we just sent them to our senators, the stacks of amazon or powells or alibris boxes in the mailroom would be impressive.
If just 435 of us sent to the house as well, most impressive!
Sounds like a activist DUer campaign to me!

I think a San Fran CA paper asked people to send in their copies of 1984 and then the paper was going to send them to congress. (?)

that a DU-er received of the book
While the media will occasionally allow the criticism agaisnt W, there's one area that BFEE is very ferm: no challenging lefitimacy. Gore is to be dismissed as loser the moment he appears, Kerry was given his silver coins for his cooperation.
Democrats are to be left wondering about how to "reinvent" themselves and the illusion of the "even split" is to be carefully maintained.
God forbid the stupid many figyre out THEY ARE THE F*ING MAJORITY and democracy is just a pretty word we use in speeched about invading other countries!
Yes, this is the most subversive topic nowadays - and there are a large number of DU-ers that put their fingers in their ears and run the moment they smell this topic.
We need to keep the illusion going! Let's attack Hillary - to make the freepers gloat! Forget she ain't running as of yet and is she were, elections are fixed. Let's get the majority in congress ! Work hard, get an electable candidate!
In fact, this has to be the funniest word in the English language
ELECTABLE

41. A person with money and/or family has much to lose
We need someone whose need to reveal the truth and uphold justice outweighs their instinct for self-preservation. But the chances of anybody like Malcolm X becoming as well-known as he was before getting murdered are tiny, because the criminals have such great communications technology at their disposal. I mean, who else has the power to eavesdrop on ANY (unscrambled) cell phone or telephone conversation in the U.S.?

And who did the Blackwater guards kill in New Orleans? Who knows.

55. People like Oprah, if they called a spade a spade...
would literally be murdered, have loved ones murdered, or be financially ruined. They've done it to Paul Wellstone, Bobby and Jack Kennedy, MLK, Malcom X, etc. Perhaps not to each and every one of those individuals, but I have read compelling arguments to government involvement in each of those deaths.

Because, so many of the online order points will do like Amamzon and point out to other purchasers of the non-political item that the purchasers of 'xyz non-political item' also bought Mark Crispin Miller's book. It is collateral advertsing, I think.

Thanks for pointing that out, and I assume your reason was the one I have stated.

32. NYTIMES: LIARS. Read promise to report election fraud here:
from letter to me on Nov 21, 2004:

And more, I expect, will be explored and explained in future articles if meaningful allegations can indeed be established as facts. Both Matthew Purdy, the head of The Times’s investigative unit, and Rick Berke, the paper’s Washington editor, assure me that reporters will continue to look into the issue. I’m confident that if they find something, they’ll publish it. A good investigative reporter (much less a whole staff of them) turning away from a story like this one if true would be like a flower turning away from the sun. Careers are made by stories that detail massive election fraud.

46. I bet we could. And, maybe we could schedule some
discussion threads on it, chapter by chapter. Maybe we could ask Mark to sit in on one of them?

$16 bucks might be hard for some in January but it's really only pizza money.

English information about Tegenlicht (Backlight)
VPRO is a Dutch national public broadcast organization, active in the fields of television, radio, internet and magazine publishing. Its television department is a leading, noncommercial, national broadcaster. As a public broadcaster with a long tradition of independence, we try to surprise the audience with high quality programs, observing and analyzing society without prejudice.
Tegenlicht ('Backlight') is VPRO's international 50 minute documentary program. The program focuses on our globalized world in which economies, societies and cultures are seeking a new mutual balance. In its history the program has always tried to grasp the quintessence of prominent developments. By carefully selecting our subjects we hope to raise more understanding for what is happening in the world.

The series has an open format, and includes documentary-style episodes from abroad, live television debates and in-depth interviews with people who have developed theories that add to our understanding of how to come to grips with the world at the beginning of the 21st century. Every story is made in a cinematographical manner. We use very little commentary and always treat the story in a non-biased way. This results in a documentary style where the persons filmed tell the story themselves.
Episodes of Backlight are aired on a weekly basis on Dutch public channel Net3 and many of them are also aired in other countries like Japan, Germany and the USA.

Series editors:
Doke Romeijn
Frank Wiering

50. Critical to the Restoration of our democracy...
This is the most important issue that needs to be front and center in all discussion along with the Domestic Spying/Constitutional Crises which all Americans need to be AWARE of ... all other issues follow the restoration of our RIGHTS as Americans and our REPRESENTATION through an honest and fair elections process.

The Abramoff scams, and now the disappeared issue of the Plame Leak affair is being covered to the extent that the FCMSM will cover it...

but getting these other two FAR MORE important issues need to be front and center... the domestic spying issue is being distorted and spun on the FCMSM to bolster the presidents claims that there is an arguement to be made that he has the authority to do what he wants..

so, pushing these FCMSM bastards is critical to getting this book on the air and an interviews of him is essential on the road to restoring our democracy.

in front of the firefighters' convention.

The same media who gave Kerry 3 hrs total coverage to be divided between Clinton, Edwards and Kerry. THAT was a great way for the country to get to know the candidate, wasn't it?

The media is our ENEMY - they work for their corporate masters aligned with the GOP's fascist agenda.

Kerry had to overcome the media working against him or ignoring him. Hopefully. Miller can do the same, but I don't see how anyone on the left and ANY Dem can cut through, unless ALL Dems get together and EXPOSE the rightwing control of the broadcast media.

Thank you for sharing this. It's well put. Why do they interview him on selected topics. He's a general personality and writer who sells a lot of books. Why not talk about the "unmentionable."

ELECTION FRAUD may be off limits for the press, CM/MSM, but not for long. When it hits the streets, MSM and the lackeys who have denied the legitimacy of this subject will be exposed for what they are, collaborators.

The media won't touch it because it challenges the reality that Bush actually won the election in 2004. Once you grant that he didn't fairly win because of all the election shenanigans, then what? It requires facing the truth, which is NOT what this country is ready to do.

68. A PLAN to hit Amazon's best-seller list - here's how
It's not just total sales - or Chicken Soup/Harry Potter would dominate.

It's acceleration over a short period of time. So I suggest we pick a target date, suggest it on the other blogs, and then all hit at the same time.

For example, let's all order on or around 2/1/04.

See the link below for how it works, as well as writers can tell:

http://booksandwriters.com/faq.php

Anyone who's already ordered has started the ball rolling, but a culmination date would be helpful, and give people time to get one more paycheck.

So let's all order BY 2/1/06? I'm posting this elsewhere, too, unless I get some serious disagreement with this.

69. I'll disagree
I've done this ... yes, the tactic will work.

But the underlying issue is bogus. The author doesn't present any facts and presents his case miserably.

I tried to help him once - arranging for him to be interviewed for the Phil Donahue show and he managed to insult the associate producer, then called him a "clown" in a public forum.

although I live in OH and have read lots about the election, I haven't read THIS book, and may not know enough about M Crispin Miller.

You've given me pause about this particular book, though...

71. I caught his act on the Daily Show
Apparently, he hasn't taken charm school lessons since then ...

I agree the issue is vital - that's why I examined the Diebold code when Bev Harris offered it. That's why I pleaded with the producers of "Unprecedented" to film the demonstration of ES&S's system when Theresa Lepore was explaining that "long fingernails" could produce bogus results.

Florida's attempt to replay the scrub of voters before the 2004 election was thwarted because the mainstream media had the facts - my statistical analysis - to present to a judge. We can make a difference, but this book is not a suitable vehicle and the author is not a presentable spokesman. How the heck you manage to appear humorless when interviewed by the Daily Show is beyond me, but knowing him, I wasn't surprised.

You never let it go, do you? You tried to butt into Mark's business, he declined to have anything to do with you, and still you pop up now, yet again, to slam him on the internet. Why? Can't you find something productive to do? Honestly do you think nobody here has met Mark, or seen him on the Daily Show, or heard him on AAR, or read his books? Do you expect people to believe you, or their own eyes and ears? Really it's very very tired Fredda. Let it go.

And BTW, nobody is interested in your "career." This thread is not about you. If you like, you could start another thread, and title it "Fredda" - and then you could post ALL your accomplishments and drop all the names you like. Drop that Bev Harris name again, for example. That should go over well.

73. 2K was the "test run" to see just how the public (and dems) would react
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 10:55 PM by SoCalDem
Bush & republicans "over-acted", and the dems and our candidates "under-acted".. They then had TWO YEARS to "roll out the new product"..computerized voting machines. We were briarpatched, plain and simple..They created such a nightmare in 2K, that there was NO WAY we would NOT demand a "better system", and Goll-ee, wouldn;t you know it?...they just happened to have a few "fabulous" sources for all those high-fallutin' machines WE SAID WE WANTED.. so huge sums of OUR treasury's loot money was transferred to the bank accounts of their pals who make the machines. Those pals probably endorsed the checks and sent them right back to *² for his next campaign...

02 worked like a charm and those pesky democratic senators & congress people didn't know what hit 'em.. The day of the election, they are leading, and WHAM..they lose..

By '04, the system was fine-tuned and a variety of "options" existed.

They HAD to have a mandate this time around, so of course the only way to do that was make sure his totals were well-padded in states that would never be questioned, and to make sure he won by just enough in the crucial states.. With no exit polls, the only "protests" possible would be anecdotal evidence from disgruntled kerry suppiorters, and they knew it would blow over.

110K x 31 states "won" = 341 million mandate..of course not every state won would generate 110K, but in Texas and a variety of other safe states, the difference was no doubt padded just enough..

that we the people don't care. In their view it doesn't matter whether this book and others like it are accurate, fair, or revelatory, because the American people are "tired" of these kinds of questions, and now we have to accept GWB as our legitimate leader and get on with our lives.

At least that's all that I can figure, besides the fact that the corporate powers that be are getting all they've ever wanted with the current miscast of characters.

however, Harper's ain't exactly got the mass appeal of, say, People.

This all really speaks to the need for the left to build a national news media structure to counterbalance the right's stranglehold on media.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening for some time to come. :evilfrown:

100. I'll tell you why
Because you have to be crazy to believe this. I'm crazy. It drives me crazy. It eats at you thinking that the most important premise of your country-the right to vote and have those votes recorded accurately is built on make believe. And telling it to someone-even someone sympathetic-someone who even felt that something "just didn't feel right" a day after the election with the results-well they don't want to live in crazy land with you. You tell them why you are angry-and they don't want to believe it-they want absolute PROOF. Well, funny so do I. I want proof that John Kerry lost this election and the coldest and only comfort I have is I know "they" -my endless opposition don't have it.

It's lonely. And denial and letting it go-is so much easier than crazy land. Because for the mainstream media to address this honestly would mean the questioning of everything that is. And to question it all-the very legitimacy of our government is not something very many have the barest hint of courage to do.
