Dining with the Bushes: Personal chef shares his secrets

(Poppy and Babs) - edited to clarify which Bushes

http://www.belleville.com/mld/miamiherald/living/food/13655125.htm?source=rss&channel=miamiherald_food

All decked out in red, white and blue, The Bush Family Cookbook: Favorite Recipes and Stories From One of America's Great Families (Scribner, $30) offers a peek into the kitchen cabinet -- lowercase -- of Barbara and George Herbert Walker Bush.

Recipes range from the unironically retro (pastry-wrapped pineapple cream cheese), the Texan (tacos) and the Down East (Walker's Point seafood chowder) to the international (kapsa, an exotic rice dish De Guzman learned to make from Prince Bandar of Saudi Arabia). The inclusive (noodle kugel) and the unapologetically high-fat (3 cups whipping cream and ½ cup butter in Paula's Lemon Chicken -- serves six) crop up, too.

The Bushes, De Guzman said, particularly like soup, salad and Chinese food, and they're not above eating cereal for dinner: Mrs. Bush likes wheat puffs, President Bush Life.

Mrs. Bush added that her husband is no fan of ``slimy white fish.''

As for broccoli -- enough said. I spied Ovaltine in the pantry and Coors in the refrigerator.

(end snips)

Interesting read about the chef, though. He seems like a great guy.

10. No, they can eat - it just doesn't sustain them.

4. This is Poppy and Babs.
I just realized I didn't include anything that said which Bushes.

5. Best to wear a rain slicker when dining with Poppy Bush:
...ask the Japanese Prime Minister. ;)

6. You have to find the NY Times interview with the chef
It's hysterical. And in it he says that he didn't want George Junior to endorse his book as it might hurt sales. :)

7. LOLOL. I like what he said about Kennebunkport
Ultimately, De Guzman accompanied the president and Mrs. Bush to Houston, where he delights in his easy schedule and the city's well-stocked grocery shelves. Come summer, De Guzman presides over the Bushes' kitchen at Kennebunkport, Maine.

''Over there it's seven days a week, three meals a day and snacks, tea and receptions in between.'' Maine, he added, is ''a beautiful place,'' but ``you can only listen to seagulls so many times.''

8. Man they are working his ass off!
Seven days a week? I hope the Bush lovers buy up his book so he can quit.

9. I can just picture Poppy happily eating "Life" at the dinner table
I bet he gorges on it, sloppy but unashamed, and delights in the symbolism.

11. Chicken with whipping cream?
Mercy. And people think Ding Dongs with taco sauce is strange (thanks, Junior... uh, I mean Zippy!*).

* Yes, I CAN tell them apart! Zippy dresses better.
