Is Santorum turning agains Bush?
FEATURE: Santorum 'holy war' speech dissected

by Damon Boughamer
Public Radio Capitol News, serving Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, Penna. (PRCN, 30 August 2006) – Republican U.S. Senator Rick Santorum – who trails in polls against Democrat Bob Casey Junior – delivered an unexpectedly provocative address Monday that focused on foreign policy.

Scholars are parsing the actual content of the speech.

Political pundits, meanwhile, are wondering about its intended effect.

The Pennsylvania Press Club invited both men to speak. Casey, last month, was rhetorically restrained.

"I think this is going to be an election about accountability for your record and it’s going to be an election about where we’re taking the people of America," he said in even tones.

1. Nah. Santorum is always *for* Santorum
and screw anybody who gets in the way. He knows he's in trouble and he's scared. He'll say whatever it takes to try and shed the loony, fundie image he's made for himself because he knows this year he's vulnerable. He'd just as quickly jump back in Bush's whackadoo corner when/if re-elected.

4. Last I heard he pulled up to within 10 points of Casey
But don't go by me.

Quinnipiac puts it at 48% - 42% as of 8/15 but I really don't think it's that close. Not even the rabid RWers I know of say they'll be voting for Ricky Retardo.

8. I can't take credit for that little soubriquet
A cleverer DUer than me coined that one. I wish I could remember who said it and give them the credit, but it's too good not to use anyway. :D

3. Santorum would turn against his own liver if the polls called for it.

People talk about Delay being bad but to me, Santorum is the epitome of sleazy politician. How he got this far is beyond me...

7. Santorum is far more dangerous too.
Think about it - ultra-fundy whacko from a blue state? That's one hell of a stepping stone to a Presidential nomination.

9. Ok, I must be missing something. How does this show Ricky turning
against Dubya? It just sounds like Ricky is taking an even harder right turn.

"We get bogged down on Sunni and Shi’ite, with secular governments and non-secular governments, and we say they’re all different. No, they’re not. They’re a common enemy," Santorum said.

The gist of what I took away from the article is that Ricky is saying all Iraqis are our enemy and that we are in a war against Islam-o-fascism. How's that much different than Dubya?
