Al Gore: "Start by Arming Yourself With Knowledge"
"Start by Arming Yourself With Knowledge"
Al Gore breaks through with his global-warming message
By Pat Joseph

Sierra: What steps can an individual take in the face of such an overwhelming crisis?

Gore: Become carbon-neutral. Reduce your carbon footprint and then offset what can't be completely eliminated. I'd love to see the advent of a grassroots carbon-freeze movement analogous to the nuclear-freeze movement. But start by arming yourself with knowledge. You'll have the confidence to be a vocal political actor in whatever party you belong to and start demanding that leaders solve this problem.

Sierra: In your new book, you quote Martin Luther King Jr.'s warning that in "life and history, there is such a thing as being too late." Are you confident we'll act in time?

Gore: Yes. I am an optimist, and that influences my answer. I believe we will rise to this challenge. But we have to start very quickly, and we have to make it our priority.

Pat Joseph is current-affairs editor for the Sierra Club's Web site.

2. We need "eco-moms/dads" instead of soccer moms & NASCAR dads
We need candidates who are willing to talk to voters about the environment - global warming, water quality, air quality, etc. - so that voters will understand that consumer decisions we make everyday will affect those that come after us. One of the beautiful things about AIC is that it hammers home the impact that our consumer choices have on the future of our planet.

7. He's been the leader on this all along
He's been fighting the media to get this on the front burner for years. I wish he would become our political voice in 2008.

4. A populace armed with knowledge would be the neocon's worst nightmare
It would be anathema to their dream of dumbing down the American People.

5. yes, and instead of having a vague idea they could use ...
... to drum up fear, and stretch into the indefinite future to cover anything they want ("The terrorists will win unless you all rush out and buy this geegaw!") ... they would have to present a concrete plan that actually shows results. Like, for example, the Montreal Protocol and the monitoring of the ozone layer (which is apparently stabilizing thanks to all the measures taken by the international community).
