Caught Red-Handed Applying A Double Standard

The liberal group attacks 3 Republicans for voting for military spending bills, but endorses Democrats who voted the same way.
August 30, 2006Modified: August 30, 2006

Summary
MoveOn.org Political Action attacks three Republican House members in TV ads saying they were "caught red-handed" supporting money spent on Halliburton contracts and wasteful Iraq projects. But a majority of Democrats voted the same way on most of the same measures, usually overwhelmingly. MoveOn endorses one Democratic House member who voted the same way 10 out of 14 times, and two senators who voted for the same measures every time they reached a recorded vote in the Senate.

Another ad says the same three Republicans were "caught red-handed" taking donations from military contractors while failing to support penalties for contractors who overcharge. In fact the donations were relatively small and MoveOn offers no evidence the votes were influenced by money. Furthermore severe penalties already exist for fraud against the Pentagon. What the targeted Republicans opposed were Democratic proposals to increase penalties.

Analysis
The two 30-second MoveOn TV ads "Dumping Billions" and "Red-Handed Defense" are running in the congressional districts of the three Republican incumbents they target, Reps. Charlie Bass of New Hampshire, and John Sweeney and Randy Kuhl of New York. The ads are the third iteration of MoveOn's "Caught Red-Handed" series which we discussed before.

1. Wikipedia:
FactCheck is a nonpartisan, nonprofit website, which "aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics". It is run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, and has received funding from the Annenberg Foundation.

Most of its content consists of rebuttals to inaccurate, misleading, or downright false claims by Democrats and Republicans.

FactCheck became a focus of political commentary following the 2004 vice-presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards. Cheney cited the website, claiming that the independent site defended his actions while CEO of Halliburton. Although FactCheck did note that Cheney had not profited directly from Halliburton's Iraq contracts, the issue in question during the debate — criminal investigations and fines levied against Halliburton — was not addressed on the site until after the debate.

Cheney's reference became the global-chuckle-of-the-day when he incorrectly cited the website's address as "factcheck.com", which was a website controlled by Name Administration Inc. Fearing their servers would be overwhelmed, the administrators redirected traffic to point to a website owned by billionaire activist George Soros.<1>

7. Many of the Annenbergs are GOP donors.
The current president, chairman and sole director of the Annenberg Foundation, Leonore Annenberg, donated $2000 to Rick Santorum's re-election campaign.

11. Whether the University of Pennsylvania would compromise

in order to please the Anneberg Foundation is a separate question.

Factcheck.org is run by the school and not by the foundation.

3. They are only "freeper" when we don't like what they say
When they say things we agree with, they are dead solid gospel truth. When they talk about things we don't care about, they are middle of the road BUT distracting people from what is really important.

Just like all of the polls and news outlets.

Didn't you know that?

8. I am neutral on Mike Malloy but have been told I am the president of the
Randi Rhodes hating fan club because I pointed out that she lost the bet with the guy on Larry King Live.

MoveOn is taking a stand against the corporate lobby and the influence they have on our government. They endorse Democrats that are not bought and owned by the corp "Big Money" lobby.

The Republicans were "caught red-handed" taking money then voting to help those companies! Crooks!!!!
