Keith-!OMG!-Olbermann - Transcript/Video - From Tonight's Slam Of Rummy
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 08:31 PM by kpete
TRANSCRIPT: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/

(snip)
That, about which Mr. Rumsfeld is confused is simply this: This is a Democracy. Still. Sometimes just barely.

And, as such, all voices count -- not just his.

Had he or his president perhaps proven any of their prior claims of omniscience — about Osama Bin Laden’s plans five years ago, about Saddam Hussein’s weapons four years ago, about Hurricane Katrina’s impact one year ago — we all might be able to swallow hard, and accept their “omniscience” as a bearable, even useful recipe, of fact, plus ego.

But, to date, this government has proved little besides its own arrogance, and its own hubris.

I live in N. Calif. and Boxer and Thompson aren't bad either.

But it's awesome to have someone like Keith O. in a primetime slot, give the

Bush cabal a, BIT OF THEIR OWN.

17. The opening sentences were also very important
The man who sees absolutes, where all other men see nuances and shades of meaning, is either a prophet, or a quack.
Donald H. Rumsfeld is not a prophet.
-----------
You see Rumsfeld and the rest of Bushco are fugging fascist quacks - the emperor and his goons are naked, exposed, and KO has delivered the ultimate and definitive commentary on their complete and utter inversion of reality. There is nothing left to be exposed. The game is over. Absofugginglutely brilliant.

25. Whoa, that was powerful!!

The simple, overiding fact about Rumsfeld and his cronies, as KO pointed out, is that they are profiting tremendously from the current state of affairs, that which leaves the average American in a state of fear and confusion. Keep that in mind every time you see them in the spotlight, applauding each other, laughing and smirking. This is the essence of the approaching fascism that we have to worry about.

19. Here's a FDR quote on security vs freedom
Olbermann is right, it comes down to freedom, freedom of dissent, freedom of speech, freedom
of the people to pick their own candidates, freedom of the press...freedom which has been
shouted down or repressed too frequently lately in this country to our loss.

...By an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to the proposition that principle of morality and considerations for our own security will never permit us to acquiesce in a peace dictated by aggressors and sponsored by appeasers.

We know that enduring peace cannot be bought at the cost of other people's freedom. In the recent national election there was no substantial difference between the two great parties in respect to that national policy.

"Difference of opinion leads to enquiry, and enquiry to truth; and that, I am sure, is the ultimate and sincere object of us both. We both value too much the freedom of opinion sanctioned by our Constitution, not to cherish its exercise even where in opposition to ourselves."

K.O. is the best newscaster in broadcast media. You are lucky to have him. When the history is written of this era, Keith Olbermann will stand out as the voice that stood up against the slide toward fascism. Bravo Olbermann and bravo to MSNBC for taking the lead in restoring democracy and the constitution for which it stands. And when the pictures of Bill O'Reilly preforming oral sex on Don King get published Keith will be there to take Bill's disillusioned audience. Oh, one more thing: the part about oral sex on Don King is fake, but try to get that image out of your head. You can't, can you?

96. My emails
When I watched the commentary yesterday the first time I was moved and deeply touched that a broadcast had the bravery to stand up against the bullies and those who would tell us not to question. not to think, but to believe them and do as we are told rather than exert our rights that we should all see the invisible robes.

His words were stirring and powerful enough that I have chosen to keep an archive on my DVR to show my friends who missed it either for working or being unable to afford cable. Thank you for again making the voice of the people known, many of us are good, decent people who feel as though we have been trapped into a nightmarish administration that sees the American people as nothing more than another resource to be exploited.

To countdown

I must compliment your station for having a brave soul like Kieth Olberman who is willing to speak directly and clearly against those who bully and demean any who dare speak against them. Having someone of his mettle on your network is commendable.

to Viewerservices

Well done. Nothing more than summarize the magnificent job you did for the American people when you gave your opinion at the tail end of your broadcast. I look forward to sharing it with my friends.

44. Tonight, I took a breath. I exhaled. It felt good.
I felt a little less tension, and a little more hope. How strange.

What I wrote to Olberman:

I have not your eloquence, and I am, as many Americans are, sometimes a spectator to the events of our nation, but not always. In my life, I have done what I could, participated when possible, and contributed when I was able. Tonight, I must thank you for your words on the broadcast. It is rare indeed to hear such forceful words. It seems everyone is afraid anymore. This brings me such despair for our country, as the Constitution was written so that the citizens of the United States wouldn't have to feel that fear. What you said tonight needed to be said, and moreover you said it beautifully. You'll have my gratitude more than you'll ever know.

45. Wow. Just.....wow.
I'm not sure which emotion I feel more strongly right now: relief that KO is calling the administration OUT and speaking to Americans about what the fuck is happening to their country; OR that KO seems to be one of the very few to do this.

There's a lot of journalists who have a lot of redeeming to do. They have been complicit and whimpy in the face of the most dangerous anti-American administration in U.S. history. It's too late for them to erase the impact their complicity has had on hundreds of thousands of families here and throughout the world. But for the sake of their souls they need to pull their heads out and speak to the American people as Olbermann did and tell them what is REALLY going on. They've got two paths. Their current path will have history shaking their heads and remarking at how shameless and embarassingly the American media was when we needed them most. The other path will have history crediting the media with helping to stop the fascist PNAC neocons.

I fear it's out of control for now. We can't count on the corporate media for anything worthy anymore. It's probably going to get a lot worse before it gets better. God have mercy.

this administration is on a blitzkrieg to control history for the next few weeks -- and i HOPE that olberman's speech is just the first of many from others to fight for History.

the administration is seeking to put out the lights -- the lights by which the american people can learn and read the truth -- and then letting that truth motivate their tongues.

56. That was unbelievable
For so long I have turned away from the MSM. They have been inept and complacent at every turn since Bush became president, choosing to show us other news whenever they could. Missing white girl, or...there was a fire in a house downtown, or...hey everybody, look...a three legged cat! All the while Bush and his zombies dropped turds on the Constitution and molded the America I knew into something sinister and unwelcome around the world.

I have been watching Keith for more than a year, not all the time, but he has been at least some reason to hope that somebody besides Jon Stewart was paying attention. I am overjoyed beyond words to see Keith make this powerful statement, even more so that he didn't crack a joke in the middle of it, diminishing it's tone.

Four years ago this would have been equivalent to his resignation. Now, I hope, the bosses at MSNBC will try something new. They might find that this demographic of people who want to hear this kind of talk might be big enough to make some money from, and they won't just kick Mr. Olberman to the curb. God knows it's all about money these days.

Everyone forgets how the very architechts of this war "sucked" up and appeased Saddam Hussein in the 1980's. Here's a little reminder of Rummy "appeasing" Saddam back in 1983:

BTW, why not post the article from Boston.com and start another thread?? We all need a reminder of how much bullshit and hypocrisy emanates from Rummy.

68. I Saw That
This is exactly the the type of hard hitting comeback that is required when confronted with such garbage as Rumsfeld spewed out.

Indeed, Bush has borrowed the playbook of Neville Chamberlain --- another "upstanding" conservative and Nazi sympathizer. Bush applies his brand of conservatism with the grace of Joseph McCarthy.

Who will be the one to stand up to Bush and ask "have you no shame". Even KO stopped just short of posing that very valid question.

82. MSM
Keith Olberman's speech in regard to Rumsfield's is the encouragement that this country needs. America is at a very low point and that is when hopeful statements have the power to turn things around.

This might even become a profitable departure in the status quo for MSM. They do go where the majority of the opinion is headed.

86. Okay, I read the transcript. I don't think it is quite as trenchant as
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 09:25 AM by WinkyDink
the posts here led me to believe. I thought the Murrow quote was just okay, and I had assumed KO was explicit in calling out Bushco as fascists; he wasn't. He said, No, YOU'RE the Neville Chamberlains.

Also, this phrasing---"But variations of it have faced our forefathers, when men like Nixon and McCarthy and Curtis LeMay have darkened our skies and obscured our flag. Note -- with hope in your heart — that those earlier Americans always found their way to the light, and we can, too."---was weird.
Edited to say: I think I just "got" this! That KO wanted to use the term "forefathers" to allude to the time when revolution was a GOOD thing, but then invoked the MODERN names of Nixon et al. to remind us that EVEN WE IN MODERN TIMES have been known to have resolve and TRUE patriotism.

I DO salute KO; in my house, we call him "Da Man"!

88. It seems to me that he was pretty explicit
"The confusion is about whether this Secretary of Defense, and this administration, are in fact now accomplishing what they claim the terrorists seek: The destruction of our freedoms, the very ones for which the same veterans Mr. Rumsfeld addressed yesterday in Salt Lake City, so valiantly fought.

And about Mr. Rumsfeld’s other main assertion, that this country faces a “new type of fascism.”

As he was correct to remind us how a government that knew everything could get everything wrong, so too was he right when he said that -- though probably not in the way he thought he meant it.

This country faces a new type of fascism - indeed."

95. I'm so grateful for his smarts and backbone
A fact-based rant complete with insightful historical references. Even though I stay fairly well-informed when it comes to the shenanigans of the Bush admin (thanks to internet news sources obviously) I felt KO's remarks added clarity to my perceptions. Compare the intelligence of what he said, and the restrained passion with which he said it, to what passes for commentary by the rightwing blowhards who've been dominating public discourse for several years now. On the one hand we have someone using his public platform to speak like a thoughtful human being and patriot. And on the other hand we have the same old cast of characters delivering their same old tired insults toward critics of Bushco, on the level of not-particularly-bright preschoolers -- "liberals are Saddam-loving poo poo heads."

I hope this extraordinary video is remembered the next time someone starts a thread here pitching a fit because KO likes to devote some of his programming to sports coverage, or otherwise behaves in a way indicating that his show does not air on DUNBC.

Rock on, Keith.

101. Terrorism Must End By Thoughtfulness, Not Reaction
Politics or Baseball, what should we focus on in this
world?
Well, for those who are good natured and love baseball
and "understand" its meanings, I suppose you should
contiue making sense of things with the passion you have.
Hopefully people could play baseball in a well adjusted world
where people are happy and healthy. I add that I used to pay
more attention to sports than I do now, and Olbermann used to
be a sportscaster who made me "stew" with his
delivery, you know, a "STEW ART". Damon appears to
be one too, although for different reasons.
Making sense of the world, for those of us who are
focusing more on politics, requires making value judgments
based on our knowledge and method of thinking. For those just
"catchng on" or maybe taking interest in making
things improve for everyone and themselves, you should
remember what Senator George Mitchell once said, that
"everyone has value." You should keep that in mind
as you work to make things better in whatever way you think is
best.
There are usually not easy answers to the questions we
have, but I think you have to try to make progress and act on
it the best way you think. You can't be faulted much for
having good intentions. Hopefully, your ablity to understand
and make good decisions will advance over time. I think it
depends on how much you are focused on making sense of things,
despite all the forces that are resisting you doing that. I
think beginners and intermediate learners need to put more
emphasis on the phrase "better safe than sorry" than
people who really understand things well, and are trying to
help. There are times when we all have risks to take, but
taking more time to be as confident of what you're doing is I
think a good idea.
Of course critical to what is being said is the issue of
terrorism, which only to me underscores the importance of
learning.
Being ignorant of facts can lead many to believe that the
"terrorists" are the greatest danger we face, rather
than the very powerful interests that govern our society. It
can seem like the "safe" choice to make, to focus
only on terrorism, but that is because uncovering the bigger
picture probably hasn't taken place. To me, because I have
done a considerable amount of reading and digging for truth,
it is "safer" to try to work for peace and stop the
tyrants that I believe control our lives, than to support them
in their agenda. Remember that they monitor your behavior, so
think about that before acting. I think it demonstrates that
the more you learn and think, the better choices you will
make. Learning more will probably tell you that it IS safer
to oppose the most powerful and dangerous threat, which I
believe is instigating the upheaval. Of course, it's hard to
be certain about things, I just think making the best effort
you can is a good idea. Hopefully, by doing so, you will help
us and future societies live good lives. Wishing you well in
your efforts.

102. FYI for those who only read the transcript -- a classic example of,
in this instance, the power of the spoken word over the written. I sent MSNBC the following:

Keith Olbermann’s commentary on Rumsfeld was outstanding. FINALLY the conversations we’ve been having in our homes and workplaces are seeing the light of day. We have all pretty much given up on mainstream media (corporate media) – the lies, attempt at false “balance” and right wing nuttiness has just been too much.

Then this commentary. Speaking truth to the naked Emperor. Yes. We want to hear more. Talk to the millions of disgusted, angry, frightened Americans who believe their government has been highjacked by a moron and his cronies. It you don’t talk about it now, you will be taken by surprise at the polls in November.

104. DOD: AP ‘mischaracterized’ Rumsfeld’s speech in report
This was in today's Stars and Stripes. Soldiers calls to their representatives must have spiked after Rummy's bizarro comments.

*****************
The Defense Department took the unusual step Wednesday of posting a statement saying an Associated Press story had “seriously mischaracterized” aspects of a speech made Tuesday by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

The AP had written that Rumsfeld had “likened critics of the U.S. war strategy to those who tried to appease the Nazis” and that Rumsfeld portrayed the administration’s critics as suffering from “moral and intellectual confusion” about what threatens the nation’s security.

The DOD asked the Associated Press for a correction.

The AP softened its story in later versions, saying that Rumsfeld “alluded to critics of the Bush administration’s war policies in terms associated with the failure to stop Nazism in the 1930s” and added that “ides to Rumsfeld said later he was not accusing the administration’s critics of trying to appease the terrorists but was cautioning against a repeat of errors made in earlier eras.”

Thank you for Mr. Olbermann's courageous op-ed on Rumsfeld's fatuous speech. The administration and their GOP enablers have done incalculable damage to the nation in a time when we needed real leadership to face real problems. It will take years for us to dig ourselves out of the hole they have dug us into. The nation needs to throw these bums out. If enough people hear Mr. Olbermann's message, we can make a start.
