Their oil is worth far too much on the world market to burn it themselves ... and when the oil runs out they'll just be a nation of sand and few exportable resources. Unless they can build an industrial base and infrastructure, they're lost. I'd say it's even more imperative that they move to alternative energy than other nations - they have the most to lose. The Western "industrial" nations (i..e. the global corporatists) don't want that, though. The US, in particular, doesn't want the competition and wants nations that're permanently impoverished as a source of cheap labor - eventually, the US will be its own source of cheap labor but there's no limit on the appetite of corporatists for it. That's why Mexico has gone nowhere and is going nowhere. Every petroleum exporting country is in the same situation - it's imperative they find alternative energy sources. When their oil is gone, they won't have a chance. None.

If you havnt noticed, there is something different here. France and Germany in particular were huge critics to the Iraq war. However, they don't seem to be voicing much opposition against the US now when it comes to Iran. And the reason why is because Iran is a much bigger threat to Europe than Saddam was...A MUCH bigger threat.

Depending on who you believe, the Iranians are projected by most western nations to have a ballistic missile capable of reaching Berlin, Paris, or possibly even London by the end of this decade. If they also develop a nuclear weapon at the same time, we enter into a different ballgame. The Europeans will fall back into the cold war mode and begin to favor American foreign policy in the mid-east. It would also put a strain on European-American relations with Russia and China. So now you will start to see the world powers taking sides.

Look, of course I don't have a crystal ball. But I dont think the geo-political picture can continue much longer in the status quo. The US is trying to aquire natural resources. The Chinese are a growing into a monsterous economic power. The Russians are acting like Russians again. 3rd world dictators are trying to develop nuclear weapons.

The world is on a very dangerous path.
