Am I the only one who has no idea who Malloy is?
I live in remote north central Minnesota. I have never heard of him. My radio options are no options at all. Rush, Laura and some homegrown garbage.

What have I been missing?... because I've rarely seen DU so upset over something.

I come from a family of journalists and broadcasters. We are used to people coming and going in the business.

This seems to be something entirely different. It's like Al Gore was once again denied the Presidency or something.

But he's not the only one out there telling the truth.

But for many of us that anger was an incredibly theraputic thing. You'd have had to have been there I guess. He was honest, principled, and absolutely tore this bunch of pigs to shreds, using their own words against them.

Because I search my radio dial everyday for some kind of balance and I find NONE.

12. Most people hear him on Satilite Radio or on the net
Air America radio stations reach a very limited audience on the airwaves because most of AirAmerica stations are low wattage. There is one here in Chicago but it is overpowered by the religious high wattage station broadcasts where I live.

14. I didn't get him here either
but I got AAR on the XM in the car and online when I was home. On the right side of the latest page there are links to what is playing. Right now it would have said Mike Malloy. He is loved for his utter honesty. Was he angry, yes but he was angry at the things we are angry about, the hypocrisy, the lies, the disregard for the Constitution that this administration and conservative disregard. He is a true patriot.

In fact, I RARELY listen to radio unless it is NPR, MPR. That's all I get up here.

I am just overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people who are outraged by this.
I've never heard the man's voice.

I have 5 small kids and I have very limited time to play around on the computer and listen to streaming radio.

AAR just doesn't hold my attention. YES..I know they are the only option right now...but they pretty much suck. Rhandi Rhodes..for all of her great ideas...has a terrible radio delivery and she annoys the hell out of me. Sorry...but there it is.

make sure your 5 small kids are not around - Mike tends to go into angry rants and to use language you might not want the kids to hear....but he is great - he voice our outrage which was very helpful for those of SO frustrated with all that has gone on the past 5 years and 7 months....

also there are times that he is SO funny that you will laugh until you cry - the first time I ever heard him he was talking about lobster men in ME spying on each other to protect us all from terraist - I wish I knew what the date of that show was I would love to hear it again - it was hysterical - and all I could think of is WHO IS THIS GUY - that was before AAR when he was on IE

Very aggressive, loud, etc. Lots of people here love him. I empathize with the guy, and I'm sure he's a great person, but he's not really my cup of tea as a radio personality. Too much screaming for my taste, even if I agree with what he says.

44. We are also pissed off at AAR
First the run around with Sam, now this with Mike. They are going after the progressives. Remember when Liz used to work with Rachael and then she just disappeared - We didn't know why. AAR the big so called liberals are screwing their listeners. Hoping Sirius picks up Mike. I have both XM and Sirius because I live in such a rural place and don't pick up a lot of stations. It would be great to hear Mike after Steph on Sirius at night.

Check out http://www.whiterosesociety.org/Malloy.html.

These have been very very very difficult times. It has been wonderful to hear someone say what I need to hear sometimes, in the strongest and yes loudest possible way, a rational, though poignantly heartfelt, way.

He will be on somewhere. We will be able to listen again.

8. It's bad for some of us.
Malloy spoke for many of us, and of all the voices on AAR, his was the mose fearless. We have been lectured by many here to "get over it", to keep supporting AAR, even though AAR just gave many of us lefties the finger. The nannys here who advise us to continue to suport AAR because it is the only voice of the left fail to see that one of our strongest voices hase been shut down.

So once again, the choir is being told to shut up and sing.

Screw that. AAR had my full support, but since AAR seems not to give a flying pickle about what I, and many other liberals feelis important, I feel enough is enough. I keep hearing that this is how the right wins, that being upset and perhaps not supporting AAR is a baaaaad thing.

I cry bulls&*%. The right wins when voices like Mally are shut down. The righ wins when Democrats loose their spine, and try to appease. It makes it seem like we stand for nothing. While the right is very clear what it stands for.

Boycot AAR? You betcha. Your oatmeal may not have been pissed in, but mine has. This after contributing cash when they needed that.

If AAR wants me, and my ilk -- they have to prove it. As a business, they will have to suffer the result of their decisions.

Hey, it's only bidness. AAR, just like all the rest. No Better.

I really got an emotional kick listening to his show.

He also got me too angry so I had to limit my listening time.

I kind of feel bad saying this because he was pure liberal emotion.

liberal emotion is good in the right setting and listening to him scream out the truth is something I certainly don't see a lot of other people doing. I'll take the truth in any form. I'd rather see honest emotion any day rather than PC any day. That's what keeps us healthy you know.

but stepped out away from the darkside and, into the light.
he will be missed, but hopefully not for long.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Malloy

Background

Malloy grew up in a Baptist household, but is now a professed atheist. He attacks all religions, believing them to be superstitions that advance bigoted views.

Politically, Malloy is resolutely left-of-center, and is famous for his brash presentation. He makes sweeping statements about Republicans, claiming "All Republicans are evil. All of them. Your momma's a Republican? Bad luck." He is a self-described "traditional Democrat,"

Style

While his on the air style features of variety of moods and themes, he is well known for his mocking, ad hominem, relentless satire and polemical criticisms of U.S. Republican Party, Democratic Party, George W. Bush, right-wing Christians, politicians (especially rightist conservatives and neo-conservatives), and people he deems racist and homophobic. Following John Kerry's 2004 election loss, Malloy made public that he would remain a Democrat, but no longer donate money to the leadership of the Democratic Party which he feels is weak and docile in comparison to the Republican Party. He has subsequently made public overtures to the Green Party while still occasionally speaking at selected Democratic Party fundraisers.

His supporters view his use of argument ad hominem as humorous. Opponents, however, have labeled such attacks as vitriol. Malloy has clarified that his on-air attacks are intended to be humorous, previously stating, "there are some good Republicans," but explaining "You know... I tried to be Mr. Nice Guy... I used to be on CNN's Talkback Live. I tried to be a nice man... you know, don't get ugly. What did I get for it? Pushed into the wall. Screw 'em." Malloy dismisses the notion of "try to see both sides", as "these are murderous sons-of-bitches who won't allow normal, rational discussion." Malloy labels "liberals", such as Alan Colmes, who try to "compromise with these bastards" as "whores".

Journalism Experience

Prior to his radio program, Malloy was a news writer with CNN from 1984 to 1987, and publisher of the weekly Atlanta newspaper Creative Loafing. His educational background focused on English and Political Science, and included study at N.C. State University in Raleigh, the University of Toledo in Ohio, Georgia State University in Atlanta, and Jacksonville University in Florida.

25. Lots of Malloy high points, including his reading of Orwell's "1984"
That's right. On Air America Radio, he read the *entire* novel, "1984" on the air on his program. Every day he would do a bit more with eventually Kathy Bay (Mike's producer and wife) getting into the female roles. It was a beautifully produced thing, considering the low-budget. They should package it and sell CDs.

But there are so many other high points to Malloy's programs.

My best characterization of him is that he's a fire-breathing liberal.

47. I really don't think your anger at the OP is justified...
I listen to Mike Malloy but talk radio is not the ONLY source of information that's out there. If he's posting here at DU, he's getting valuable information. Frankly, I think a person who relies solely on talk radio to get their information but doesn't search out the news by other methods for themselves is FAR less informed that someone who posts on DU but doesn't listen to any talk radio. Rarely has there been a time where I've listened to Mike Malloy and found out a new tidbit of information from him that I hadn't already read on DU.

Chill out.

All I saw was a person saying they had never heard of Malloy. They weren't bragging about it, not happy about it, just stating they had never heard of him and wanted to know more about him because people (including me) are so irate about his firing. The comments about him being "ignorant" and needing to "wake the fuck up" were completely uncalled for, in my opinion.

39. Mike speaks the plain truth and most MSM radio stations refuse to
air something that radical.

That's probably why you never heard of him - all the radio stations you get where you live spout nothing but RW propaganda, like most radio stations in this country.

Go to http://whiterosesociety.org/Rhodes.html

Click on Tuesday, Aug. 29th 2006. That's what "The Voice" sounds like.

61. No, you're not alone
We live out in the country where AAR isn't broadcast. Because there's no broadband access out here, we can't listen online, either. I've tried, but at an average dialup connection speed of 26-40 Kbps, it cuts out every few seconds and I can't do anything else online while it's playing.

The irony of the situation is that we who have least access to something like AAR can often need it the most. When I lived in the city, there were a lot of progressives around us. Out here, it's like being trapped behind enemy lines. Thank God for the internet! With the MSM MIA most of the time as far as progressive issues go, we'd go nuts without it!

63. If you want to listen to the truth, someone who is not soft
on this government and stands up to the truth listen to Mike, if not, that is your own choice. Not everyone can listen to Mike but there are many of us who do. Mike is definitely not soft on his criticism of this government.

66. That's right
No fluffy dance-around the subject for Mike, oh no! That's what makes him great. Also very genuine and humble - I heard him just last week make a very big apology both to a caller personally and later to listeners when he jumped down this guy's throat because he thought he was some rightwing nut, but the guy actually had some interesting things to say. Just a refreshing change to listen to.

65. I'm worried I inadvertently put the whammy on his program.
The first time I ever heard him was filling in for Randi Rhodes the other day. I proceeded to make a post about it and - BOOM - next thing I know he's out on his ear. I'm now going to post about Shrub, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Bartlett, Snow, Frist, Burns, Stevens and a host of others. (You are getting sleepy. Very sleepy. The bus is waiting at the gate.)

67. No. I've never heard him.
I know enough to know that there is a radio station called "Air America" somewhere that has non-neo-con talk shows, and that he was hosting one of those shows. I've never heard him, or tuned in to Air America, if I could.

I'm just not a "talk show" kind of person.

I like music. I like silence. I teach middle school, and don't feel the need to listen to other people's opinions as a recreational activity. I spend enough time doing that at work, lol.

I can get the same stuff here, and other places, without ever having to hear the voices. I can pick through all the stuff that sounds eerily like ditto-speak for Democrats, and find povs that genuinely intrigue me and make me think, without having their voices crowding my brain.

71. I know who he is but have rarely listened to him.
I usually only listen to AAR when I am in my car. Occasionally I listen to the live stream. I have rarely listened when he is on and when he has it's because he has been filling in for Randi or someone else.

72. If he was on in the Boston market, I don't know when.
I listen to AAR:

Stephanie MIller in the morning, 9-12.

Al Franken, 1-3 (sometimes)

Ed Shultz, 3-6 (never)

Randi Rhodes, 6-? (if I'm in the car at that time).

If Malloy was on later in the evening, it was a time that I never am listening to the radio.
