It's a freaking movie already!!!! What is all this crap about
this British film and how the Brits are somehow insulting us by portraying a FICTIONAL assassination? OMG, people out in America, get a freaking grip! It is FICTION, not reality. How stuipid can you get? If you paid as much time to real events as you do to fictional ones--yes even the ones on reality teevee--we might get somewhere in the world.

Americans are beyond stupid sometimes. Downright pathetic, mewling, thinskinned, egocentric, monomanical, self-absorbed twit of a nation.

8. Got it, heard about it. Perhaps they should wait until he is dead.
I am not going to continue with this train of thought, agent Mike, I would never ever threaten anyone, especially not Mr.bush.

RWers, it is fiction. If "your country" can be insulted so easily, perhaps you have other problems going on.

19. Hysteria is sweeping wing nuts
I really think that they are doing this big outrage thing to keep the movie from being shown in the US. Perhaps there is some story line that they don't want to be shown before an election.

If the ridiculous story that Limpballs said that he was going to try to sell to Hollywood--about how the assasination would change foreign policy and national security for the better, except his stupid version uses Clinton instead of bush*--if that is the story line of the real movie maybe that is why they don't want the movie shown here.

Does anyone know the name of the movie? Any reviews?

9. They were in paroxysms of outrage about it on CNN a few minutes ago.
Going on about how disgraceful disgusting, horrible taste, etc. this film was. Her voice dripping with outrage, one of the hairdos said eventually it will make its way to the US, where some distributor will pick it up "to make a buck." Well, maybe it's in bad taste; so what? It sure wouldn't be the first tasteless movie to be produced. It's a work of fiction, just like all the other "offensive" movies (like the DaVinci Code, for example) that got people's panties in a bunch. Don't like it, CNN bubbleheads? Don't go to it.

And if CNN is choking on outrage, I can just imagine the heads exploding at Pox Snooze. Not gonna look, though.

And then some really weird shit where she tried to connect it to Jonbenet. Wtf?

Do you think they give them memos that say "Thou shalt tie everything coming up in the next three months to Jonbenet Ramsey"...and then they march around making retarded statements linking everything from hurricanes to movies to Jonbenet....LOL

I wish I had seen that...sounds hilarious :)!

14. Thinkin it might help some of America grow up - and see how easily reality
and fiction can be merged to tell a story.

It's an opportunity to teach: It shows the dangers of believing that what they show you is real. We need to carry that lesson over to other matters.

Me thinks that is what the cons are really upset about on this: it might cut into their gig as masters of the lie if people see how easily their vision can be manipulated.

It's a good thing. ;)

a few years ago there was a similar BBC "what-if" docudrama about a major hurricane that hit New Orleans and killed thousands of Americans.

I guess the Republicans didn't catch that one.

27. my point of course is
When it is movie/show we don't like (not all, we in a generalized sense) it should be pulled, not shown, could cause people to vote a certain way or do something bad, etc - but when it is something we like we say generally 'it's just a movie' and people need to chill out, etc and so on.

29. Not much of a point, really.
The 9-11 movie being discussed is based on lies and deception. It's propaganda.

This BBC thing is just speculative fiction.

There's a big difference between Triumph of the Will and Star Wars.

Look, I'm not saying the film shouldn't be shown and that people shouldn't go and see it if they want. I'll probably see it myself. But I do think that it serves no useful purpose other than to aid the rabid RW view of the left just before elections, and there's nothing good in that.

32. At the core of it all though is
Do movies influence people?

No one HAS to watch either one, so why try to stop either one?

If movies can and do influence people, then the right has just as much reason to bitch about movies and their 'negative impact' as does the left.

It comes down to how much faith we have in people - in this case, we feel if people watch the show they will be too stupid to understand the lies being told and will take an action we see as negative to our cause. In the movie on this thread here, the right might feel showing a sitting president being killed could get some of the same stupid people to be influenced by it.

Either way, no one is making anyone watch anything. So who cares what they are putting on?

Don't like the idea of it, or the premise, don't go see it, don't turn the channel to that channel.

26. Personally, I find it a bit distasteful, but...
...then again, this administration has done its fair share of distasteful things over the past 5 1/2+ years.

I guess my issue is with portraying even the fictional assassination of a living human being. A detestable human being, but a human being nonetheless.

That being said, it's not a big deal to me, but I do find it somewhat...I don't know...disturbing? No, creepy? No. I'm not exactly sure of the word, but something just doesn't feel exactly right about it.

Just my opinion.

34. It's consistent with my prediction that W will be 'martyred' in 2008.
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 06:46 PM by TahitiNut
As I've posted several times in past years on DU, I believe it's highly likely that the Reich-Wing will 'martyr' Junior some time in early to mid 2008. Their 'perfect' scenario would first include replacement of Cheney (for health reasons) with some intended successor to the role of Puppet-in-Chief ... say, perhaps, George Allen or Bill Frist. Then, that person would become a candidate in 2008.

Junior is a foreseeable liability. Without the hordes of sycophants and courtiers and enablers (all on the taxpayers' dimes) and the resources of the Presidency (AF-1, Marine-1, Offal Orifice, Camp David, etc.) there's no way he wouldn't become a loose cannon - a pathological narcissist deprived of a narcissistic supply-on-steroids.

But ... as a 'martyr' he'd become the GOP's JFK ... and they'd salivate to have such a 'false god' to wave in front of the spittle-bedecked, drooling, knuckle-dragging morans who are addicted to such pseudo-patriotic Viagra.

I doubt that they can resist the temptation. Nothing is beneath them.

I must, therefore, wonder whether the contrived outrage from the Reich-Wing (and their corporate media stooges) might have something to do with feeling "outed." Does the movie steal some of their thunder? On the other hand, methinks they protesteth too much. It may be preparing the "public mind."

Dear Agent Mike: In no way, shape, or form do I wish or propose any threat to the health and well-beeing of the President. Indeed, I advocate his incarceration for 20-years-to-life in a padded cell after impeachment, indictment, conviction and imprisonment for war crimes. Due process. It's the "American Way."

"Well excuse me but fuck you." (racist bastard, American History X, 1998)

How do you really feel about citizens of the United States?

Is it all citizens of the U.S. you feel this way about or just some? You made no distinction in your original post.

I realize I have been here at DU a short time, and you have been here much longer, but your comments are offensive to me as a United States citizen. You're painting all of us with a very broad brush.

I mean no disrespect to you, personally, by my quote above but after reading your original post a second time (I responded originally being somewhat familiar with the topic and only "skimmed" what you wrote) it was my initial reaction.
