Yesterday, I Saw What I Think Was An Angel
She was leaning against an old brick building. I happened to be walking by, and felt the compulsion to ask her how she was doing.

She said not so good.

She had been kicked out of her home a week ago, and had been trying to stay with people she thought were friends. They let her stay a day or so, but wouldn't let her stay longer because they thought she would bring others down on them.

She had no idea of where to go. Or what to do.

She had been using, obviously, and wanted to stop (like they all do!)

I gave her a room for one night, and told her that I would find her a rehab tomorrow (today).

I did. I had to really push, but I did.

She got on the bus this evening for the rehab, and I just got a call from them that they have her and are taking her in.

She could have easily, in this crazy fascist country, gone to jail for a number of years.

She didn't.

She's no longer leaning on a brick building with nowwhere to go.

This should happen more often.

She will probably relapse, but she's still an angel. She has hope and the memory of peace in her heart.

I wish her the best, though will never probably see or hear from her again.

I write this only to encourage others to do what they can one by one.

Peace.

4. I'm just a goof
who thinks I messed up enough to have by all rights not had the right to be here now, and feels every day is a blessing. I'm not old, but have been through and seen a lot of what people think and go through, so......

I'm just another goof trying to have others think about and remember how to help others.

I have worked for many years in the social services field, and pretty much don't know anything else.

Anyone who sees a need and tries to meet that need is an angel.

We are all humans, but what we have inside us drives us and causes us to strive for something more.

I fight against cynicism every day.

If you see someone in need, I'm sure 90% of the Duers here would do something to help. It's the way of liberalism.

It's a heartfelt kind of thing.

it's the kindness that is remembered, all the power plays will be forgotten, nobody's kid
ever hears how someone one-upped their parents, but people repeat how others helped them.

7. What a wonderful and thoughtful thing to do!
Did you give her your phone number so she could call you and let you know how she is doing?

What you did is what everyone should be doing......looking out for each other. Years ago I saw a lot of that, but not much anymore. Now it's spewing hate and slinging mud. It's awful what this country has turned in to,but at least there are still those of us who do still care. Hugs to you. :yourock:

15. No, I didn't give my number. I never do
I doubt that she even thought about it.

I hope she makes it at least for the next few weeks.

There are millions of people helping others right this minute. I'm just telling one little story. It happens all the time.

I'm just a regular person doing the same as so many others.

I, again, just wanted to say that one by one people can do something to change this thing around.

One by one.

Thank you all for your kind words, but don't direct them to me.

Let's generically thank all those who are doing something in a small way to make their little worlds better for somebody.

Thank you people that I'll never know!

13. Thanks, Moseywalker.
I worked at a residential drug treatment center for almost a year. Sometimes it takes just one caring soul to get a drug addict to accept help. Sometimes it doesn't.

I hope that she found a place that can really give her the support and help she needs to overcome her addiction. I've seen amazing recoveries but also devastating relapses...

Good luck to your angel. Let her know that a lot of people care :)

But you know the statistics....in the 80's I was in what was arguably the best rehab center on the East Coast...While I was a patient,a group from Russia came to see this "miraclulous" place...the cure rate (no recidivism for 5 years) was 25%....It is hard-really hard, to help a junkie or alcoholic.Bless you for seeing that tiny chance in each person...and indeed-both respect from me and peace-Cat

The girl, if statistics are to be believed, will most likely relapse a few times before finally getting clean for good.

but that's OK; You were kind and caring and unselfish to a person you did not know.

she'll never forget you, it'll stay with her, regardless of may or may not happen.

you have helped to restore my faith inhumanity, and i am positive hers as well.

. . . you never know what one moment of Love can do for a person. The illegal drug business is worth $500 billion a year. Saudi oil is worth $150 billion
a year.

Taleban banned opium production, and reduced it by over 95%. Today Afghanistan produces
85% of the world's opium. How much do you think goes to the CIA?

According to a report cited in Financial Times, Osama got $600 million to $1 billion a year
from Afghan opium before 2000. How much do you think he's getting now?

Did you choose the term for this reason, or was it a term you always use?

Just curious, because I just watched the movie.

IN any case, I appreciate you seeing those of us in poverty as angels. !! AFter all the vilification and being ignored, it means a lot.

No, I'm not a druggie or alkie, just poor.

48. Some of the most beautiful, smartest, most charming people
Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 03:54 PM by petgoat
you'll ever meet are addicts. The TV stereotype of the dirty deranged ragged
loony with open sores is not always true. I missed the truth about my angel
for months. I said "She has a TV and a stereo, so she can't be an addict."
Wrong.

They have to be the most beautiful, smartest, most charming people you ever met
to survive with all the challenges their condition places on them.

49. Not being an addict myself, I'll hazard a guess....
I'm guessing that some are like me -- sensitive, and "deep", and it's very painful being sensitive in such a harsh culture (which vilifies sensitive people --"Grow a skin!"), so that is part of why they turn to drugs. Or drink.

It doesn't work for me, but I'd give just about anything to escape the pain of sensitivity in a hateful society.

Is this anywhere close?

At any rate, I'm glad that there are those who see their inner beauty. I wish it were true of homeless people, etc!

...hmmm.... As I said, addicts are not in my "circle", but I know a woman with an addicted daughter, and she is a very polished con artist, so I know that's one of the possible traits, also.

50. Some are sensitive, some are just bored and/or lazy
Addiction pretty much answers all the questions of life.

What's life for? Getting high.
What's important? Getting drugs.
What about the future? Who cares?

Some people get lured into a habit by a charismatic friend who seems
to be doing okay. There's a honeymoon period with heroin that
can sometimes last a couple of years if they're occasional users
who don't get their tolerance up.

As to bullies in the world, well, like mean dogs they sense fear and
attack it. Dogs don't bite me 'cause they know I'll bite them back.

If you go around with a "please please please don't be mean to me!"
attitude people will jump on you. If you don't give a fuck they'll
usually leave you alone.
