2. Uh...I have a couple of sig others... |
|
and neither of them is an alcoholic or a racist. In fact none of the guys I've dated in my life has been an alcoholic or a racist. But then I have a hard and fast rule that I don't date republicans.

7. The nice guy I married wasn't an alcoholic |
|
but gradually became one as alcohol provided him a method of fitting in that simply being a nice guy in this culture did not.
It is sad and horrifying to watch and there is nothing you can do about it but make it worse.
He's always been a liberal. Alcoholism doesn't respect political philosophy.
He managed to get sober several years after I left. I wish him well.

America is no worse than any of them, and probably gives more room for and attention to oppositional "prejudices" than most.

9. "try to find a 'significant other' that's not an alcoholic" |

I agree. I've left several people as soon as I found out that they drank every night to drunkenness. They don't consider themselves alcoholics, of course. I'd rather live alone than deal with it.

10. We may not be a "nation of alcoholics" but at least a significant |
|
minority of Americans depend upon alcohol and, though it IS a minority, that fact, alcohol being what it is (i.e. a drug that suppress self evaluation and the ability to make judgements about your life amongst other things), has significant consequences for the majority.
