Rachel Maddow update from AAR blog (Malloy, Armstrong, changes)
Hi Blogeratti.

I know everyone's upset about Mike, about Armstrong Williams on WWRL (he is not AAR staff -- his show was necessarily inherited in the change to the new NYC affiliate), and about the paucity of information about forthcoming changes.

AAR wants to announce everything all at once, and they're not yet ready to do that. I can't talk about the changes either to the press or on the show until AAR makes its announcement.

That said, feel free to fulminate, holler, blame, explain, hope, strategize, and drift off into tangents in the comments section here. I'll try to keep a reasonable-sized thread open all weekend.

With respect,
Rachel

1. Armstrong Williams on AAR? Now I know something is
fishy here. Are the new owners going to stealthily start putting in RW hosts, (in the interest of fairness and balance, of course :sarcasm:) and destroy LW radio from the inside because they couldn't do it from the outside? :tinfoilhat:

This to me is a foot in the door approach. I'm betting he will be in more markets within the year if he has a good contract.

23. The wager is that he will trickle into other cities besides NYC.
How can he trickle into NYC if he's already there. That's kinda not a bet. I'm confused. Do you mean that he won't be in any other market than NYC at the end of the year? That makes more sense. Is that what you mean?

Anti-Bush Extremism: The New Corporate Marketing Gimmick

"Worst President Ever!" window display at the San Francisco "Marc by Marc Jacobs" store

The upscale "Marc by Marc Jacobs" fashion outlet at 2142 Fillmore Street in San Francisco's exclusive Pacific Heights shopping district recently unveiled a new window display: seven-foot-high blue letters spelling out the phrase

"WORST PRESIDENT EVER!".

Leah Garchik, the gossip columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle, scored an exclusive scoop when she mentioned the window display in her June 2, 2006 column and then called up the Marc Jacobs company headquarters. According to Garchik:

The windows were ordered up by the visual department of Jacobs' New York office, which tells me they were specified only for San Francisco. Store manager Moe Salimi said that no passer-by has complained.
There was no photo accompanying Garchik's column, so the next day I went to Pacific Heights myself to see the new display (EDITING NOTE: Look carefully for the message -- it isn't too obvious upon first glance!":

35. If
He already had a contract with the station, they won't just cancel it because they are picking up AAR shows....especially if he generates any income for them. Radio is a business, after all. Now, if AAR starts to generate real income for that station and the listeners let the management know how they feel, Williams most likely won't see his contract renewed.

38. I kinda doubt that it's just a matter of waiting till contracts expire.
The Greenfield & Williams show is WWRL's program. AAR just leases airtime on WWRL. And apparently, according to the rumors at least, WWRL made it a condition of the deal with AAR that WWRL keeps this program in morning drive time. If it was such a critical point in negotiations, I suspect WWRL intends to hang on to that time slot indefinitely for its own programming.

Meanwhile, WLIB's gone all gospel programming.

86. Because WWRL had AAR over a barrel if it insisted on not leasing that slot
to AAR? AAR was out at WLIB (and I wonder what's the story behind that) and wanted to maintain a NYC presence in some fashion to tout as a "flagship" station. As the clocked ticked down, it appears AAR faced not having any affiliate station in NYC unless it accepted WWRL's terms.

How it came to that and why/how lost WLIB might be an interesting story.

to see here.

The level of denial is breathtaking around here sometimes, because what you described is EXACTLY the M.O. that would be used if a concerted effort were underway to undermine and destroy AAR.

What puzzles me is the incredible level of denial that the Right would want to do such a thing.

After all we have seen, and what we know about their underhanded practices, tactics, and strategies, there is still to much whistling past the graveyard everyday and an attitude the equivalent of what most doctors will tell you are the 5 Most Dangerous Words To Your Health:

"Maybe It Will Go Away."

I hope that many of us are not reflecting back on this a few months from now saying, regrettably, I Told You So.

That being said AAR is going in the WRONG direction.

It's the only Liberal/Progressive network there is.

With all the Right Wing Talk dominating the airwaves, there is NO NEED for them to be "Fair And Balanced", and in my opinion, ANY move in the direction that deviates from that they are supposed to be, an alternative oasis for Liberal/Progressive talk and thought, SHOULD be greeted with suspicion.

Something has stunk from the beginning of this whole "re-shuffling of the deck"

And the smell continues to grow worse.

My 2 cents.

I'm sure an apologist or two will be along shortly to extinguish my "alarmist rhetoric", so not to worry.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

The schedule changes don't take place until mid-September. Air America is on a new station, but the schedule won't change for a couple more weeks.

At that point, hopefully Springer is gone, Armstrong Williams show is gone. Maddow moves to a better time slot (evenings, 7 to 10 I think) and Seder moves to a better time slot (9am to noon).

This means there are still two major slots open: 10 pm to 1 am, and 5am to 9am.

This is just what I read, I have no special access or info.

It sucks that these changes didn't happen at the same time, but that's life.

47. lemonade outta lemons
a) if I was Malloy, I'd never go NEAR AAR again. waiting until the man was on his way into work to call him to tell him he's fired? when he's doing a favor to them by guesthosting on a show that's on seven hours earlier than he's used to? it's just a profound lack of respect for a man who truly deserves as much respect as they could've shown him.

b) and I was just thinking this morning about just what a fine network could be made from, say:

Mike Malloy
Marc Maron
Bernie Ward
Bob Kincaid
Ian Masters
and after she finds a way out of her contract, Randi Rhodes?

step back a second and admire all that righteous liberal anger, and contrast it to the inoffensive centrism that AAR is seemingly aiming at. I know *I'd* personally pay good cash money to hear it. and if there's still such a thing as a good capitalist, they'd be wise and prescient to back and/or sponsor such a venture, whether it'd be broadcast, internets, both, or something else.

50. EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS

Look, I know many of you just won't understand this, but here goes:

Armstrong Williams DOES NOT WORK FOR AAR!

He works for WWRL, which carries his morning show, and AAR programming the rest of the day. WWRL IS NOT AAR, and AAR IS NOT WWRL!!! They are seperate companies, and WWRL is merely an affiliate of AAR. Plain and simple.

AAR is not doing this as a way to ease wingnuts onto the airwaves. They have no control over this. It is a WWRL issue. It is not part of a conspiracy. Karl Rove is not behind this. Think realistically here, and stop spazzing.

Granted, AAR has made some boneheaded moves (like canning Malloy in the fashion they did), but at least they picked up a new affiliate in NYC, and one that has fairly decent reach at that (a slight step down from AAR, but it could have been worse). I'd say AAR did not come out looking too bad on the NYC deal, Armstrong Williams aside.

51. The fact that Payola Williams is on their station is a fucking disgrace.
If that is their idea of negotiating a deal, then it's no wonder they fired Malloy on his way to work to sub for Randi.

I don't care that AAR doesn't sign his checks; they don't need to! The Bush Crime Family signs his checks, and the fact that he's now on AAR makes it a fucking laughingstock.

58. It's our right to decide what media we listen to.
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 11:48 AM by Beelzebud
And it's AAR's right to choose thier an-air talent.

They choose people we don't like, and fire the ones we do, it's not really us making the decisions. It's them..

They have chosen to alienate a certain percentage of the poeple that have been with them since the beghinning; in favor of the idea that they can bring in new non-existant listeners by moving to "the center".

They have made the decisions. Now they have to deal with the results.

They had my support until recently. It started when they dumped Lizz Whinstead, then Mark Maron, then threatened Sam's job, and now just dumped Malloy on the side of the road like a discarded Happy Meal. The firing of Malloy was the last straw. For about year I've said that if they ever fired Malloy that would be it for me, as he was the last show I was listening to on a daily basis. Now that he's been dumped, there is no reason for me to stick around listening to them.

Give me a reason to like them. The first 2 years they were on the air, they gave me plenty of reasons to like them. Now... not so much.

Sam Greenfield since February 1999 when he first came to WEVD in New York City. He got my attention right away with his rhetoric, his humor, and compassion. He is what I want more talkshow hosts to be like. He is just plain refreshing. And for what it's worth, I almost feel sorry for Armstrong when he goes against Sam, because it just isn't a "fair fight" as debates go.

60. Morning drive is THE MOST important time slot
on the air.
Your morning show is what defines you as a radio station.
Arbitron ratings are based on key time slots--with morning drive being one of those.
So...do you REALLY think that when this radio station presents their book to advertisers--that you will hear progressive advertisers?
Do you really WANT to hear advertising for Rush Limbaugh? or campaign ads on AAR for Republicans?
How do you explain to someone that isn't a politicaholic that this is just business--we just want money so we sold out?
How many casual listeners are going to listen to this asshat on the air and confuse him with one of us? They are making the argument that we are flip-flops. You hear one viewpoint in the morning and the other the rest of the day.
Is there any difference in ONLY selling your soul a little or entirely?
This is a political move.
Morning drive in NYC. One of the BEST times to get a progressive message and candidates out there--and AAR has blown it.
I'm sorry--whether you believe it or not, AAR is enabling a Neocon message. They would be better off staying silent than to do this.

71. Maybe I don't like to judge before I hear it first. Maybe I just realize
that AAR wouldn't have a NYC station if they didn't keep this show on the air, so it's the price I'll have to pay to have some radio to listen to in my office that isn't right wing. Maybe I just really, really want AAR to succeed because besides not having any radio to listen to, I'd have to hear about Limbaugh and Hannity and O'Reilly gloating for months and months.

If that's being an apologist, then I am an apologist.

88. It's an extremely easy mistake to make because so many
local stations which carry AAR insert Schultz into the AAR broadcasting.

For instance, in San Diego, AM1360 KLSD is the only local station that carries Air America broadcasts. During weekdays, from 9am to noon, AAR's Al Franken is on. Then noon-3pm it's Ed Schultz. Then 3pm-6pm it's Randi Rhodes.

For someone who doesn't know all about it, it seems at first impression that Schultz is part of AAR.
