Alito AIN'T OVER by a long shot - Reid's Staff Energetic!!
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 04:55 PM by IndyOp
This ain't over by a long shot. (Zan of Texas) spoke with a staffer at Sen. Harry Reid's office (Friday) evening. (Zan) asked him if they were considering a filibuster. He responded with energy, and said, yes, everything is on the table.

More from Zan + Will you show up at a rally?!?!

Rallies in Houston, LA, Boston, Midland + More Alito AMMO:
<http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x197158#197768>

According to Senator Feingold the Gang of 14 does not feel as if Alito is 'extreme' enough to filibuster -- LET'S CHANGE THEIR MINDS!!

Please, don't forget - we have OVER a week to go - email/call/fax more than once during this time. Each day ask yourself, "What else can I do today?" "Is there one more person I could ask to also email/call/fax?

I don't know if we are going to win - I do know that this *matters* very, very much and that I am not done fighting! :kick:

10. ...
Please filibuster Alito. Others in this state have been trying to tell you otherwise because they know how important it is for Republicans to get this man into the Supreme Court for life. They know he will not challenge Presidential Powers. He will let any president be the sole power of government by giving up the checks and balances of our government. The constitution is invalid in this current president's eyes and Alito will not challenge him on that.

Alito will not uphold the constitution over the president's word and that would be the end of democracy in the US.

Please fight for those who voted for you, not those who wouldn't vote for you anyway.

Trying to appease the so-called "swing voters" only discourages those who will vote for you and doesn't give people who don't normally vote a reason to vote for you.

If you excite your base and give the others a REASON TO VOTE FOR YOU, you will not only uphold democratic principles and help the country, but will ensure your place in the US Senate.

20. Thanks - I did drive up to Indy yesterday and dropped off MoveOn.org
petitions at Bayh's Office & Lugar's Office. 6,558 people from Indiana had signed the petition and/or sent a letter opposing Alito. The staffer at Bayh's office was *happy* to see me, showed me that other people had brought in copies of the petition and their own letters, too. She just kept smiling as I let off some steam about why we must filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, filibuster. Did a little banging on the desk for emphasis -- and she just kept smiling.

I have no idea what her smile meant - but I can hope it meant:
I know something you don't know!

11. Good!
There is another thread that I read about Alito here that stated that moderate republicans were trying to get away from Bush's extremism (election year after all) and they will support a filibuster if the democrats lead it. So let's get to it! We still have time! I think right now the main focus should be the "gang of fourteen." What's the deal on their positions now?

12. This was posted 1/19
on John Warner's-VA (one of the "gang of fourteen") website.

“I am pleased to join many of my Senate colleagues in supporting, with my vote, the nomination of Judge Alito to the United States Supreme Court..."

He went on to praise Alito. I was hoping Warner might be reasonable since he is an old time Republican-but I guess not.

15. Minds have changed before - right now not enough citizens know about
Alito's extremism and they are therefore not exerting enough *pressure* on their Senators.

I don't know if we can win. I know that stopping now is exactly what the GOP wants and it is exactly the same stinking pattern of behavior that has gotten us where we are now. :(

17. Oh, I agree we need to keep trying.
I e-mailed Warner again today. I was disappointed that he had posted his decision. My guess is he is hoping that will stop the calls, faxes, and e-mails. Warner was a voice of reason in the Republican party during the Schaivo case. I was hoping for the same concerning Alito.

13. Ooooooo... Any chance you can find that thread?
I would love to see it! :kick: :kick: :kick:

The deal on the positions of the Gang of 14: I don't know their individual positions, I do know that Senator Feingold did a 'listening' session in his home state today - he visits each county in the state listening to his constituents. At the listening session he was asked about Alito, said that he would oppose him but that he did not think a filibuster would happen because the Gang of 14 does not think Alito is sufficiently extreme --

SO The Gang of 14 Needs MORE EDUCATION!!

By *not* filibustering"... we would lose "our self esteem for one, and letting a right-wing conservative nut-case on the bench for another."

I am sooooooo on your side - I want them to filibuster even if the votes AREN'T there - i.e. it would last 30 hours, during which the Dems would hold the floor and a few more people would notice that we are in Constitutional Crisis!

Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 09:28 PM by Wordie
He's the only Democrat who has said he will support Alito.

Here's what he said:
"I have decided to vote in favor of Judge Samuel Alito to serve as the 110th Justice of the United States Supreme Court. I came to this decision after careful consideration of his impeccable judicial credentials, the American Bar Association's strong recommendation and his pledge that he would not bring a political agenda to the Court."

Could he be encouraged to change his position with enough emails and other communications from Americans voicing their displeasure? I don't know, but it couldn't hurt!

We've started an additional action thread here

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x204963

I will mention that our little upstart group realized that we simply didn't have the time to coordinate rallies all over the country -- the full Senate vote could be scheduled for Wed., Thur. or Friday this coming week.

Any towns that want to coordinate something, go for it. But it needs to be locally coordinated.

A visit to your Senator(s)' local district office would be very doable, and even a few people would be great! Maybe they'd smile too!

Your letters count
Letters received in past week: 284
Letters published: 73
Hot issues: The Star received 52 letters opposed to Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito (11 favored him), nine letters opposed to President Bush's leadership (three favored it) and six letters supporting Gov. Janet Napolitano (zero opposing). Four letters in response Martin Luther King Jr. Day were also received, as were six letters about city transportation.

This is a really small sample, I realize, but just look at those numbers! It's almost 5-to-1 against Alito! And this is in a red state!

46. write to most senators
i wrote to almost all senators sans those who are the biggest mouthpieces on the judiciary committee.

here were my messages to all those who are pro-choice:

Please filibuster Judge Alito's confirmation in the Senate. His unitary executive theory is dangerous to our constitutional government. If Alito is confirmed and after seeing Chief Judge Roberts' votes so far on the Supreme Court, Roe v Wade will be overturned with extremely dangerous consequences to the health of millions of American women.

and to those who i know are anti-choice:

Please filibuster Judge Alito's confirmation in the Senate. His unitary executive theory is dangerous to our constitutional government. If Alito is confirmed, the Legislative Branch of our government would be neutered to the point that our checks and balances could be nullified.

i already did the pfaw fax twice and called a lot of senators. they are taking running counts. if you can use the toll free number or call directly as a citizenship call, for thse of us using working assets for long distance, please do so.

thanks.

48. Good strategy: remind them of the * signing statement on Anti-torture bill
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 02:42 PM by Wordie
that most of them supported (I don't have the list of those that did, but I imagine it could be found by googling). Tell them that their own legislation is being overridden by Bush, and that Alito, as he is supportive of the unitary executive and signing statements themselves, would probably decide to uphold this usurping of their legislative authority, if the issue were to come before him on the SC bench.

With the potential threat that Alito poses to the balance of powers between the branches of government, and their own legislative power, what Senator could in good conscience vote for him?
