President Hussein Has Talks With a Kurdish Rebel Leader

Published: August 14, 1991

President Saddam Hussein met today with a Kurdish rebel leader, Massoud Barzani, but there was no indication of progress in the stalled four-month-old negotiations on Kurdish autonomy.

The talks began in April after the President Hussein crushed rebellions by the Kurds and Shiite Muslims that broke out after Iraq's defeat in the Persian Gulf war.

The talks today, the first in two weeks, came amid indications of rising tensions in the Kurdish-dominated north and suspicions that Mr. Hussein may be stalling.

3. The only good thing and Saddam was the fact that he
helped keep the Iranians in check. You could say Bush created the Iranian crisis when he invaded and overthrew Saddam.
