Kitty Kelley's The Family? If you have not read it or listened to it, do so. Oh. My. Goodness. That's all I have to say.

I've listened to the last two parts (dealing with Dumbya's race for governor and the president) a few times this week. Since I listen to it rather than have the book, I don't see if any of it is footnoted. I think when I have time, I'm going to take notes and post them here in a journal.

You should check this book out if you haven't already. After what * did to McCain in S.C., * had the nerve to grab McCain by the hands after the debate there and say we have to run better campaigns. McCain was incensed by the hypocrisy.

Even if just half of the "gossip" is true, your jaw will stay on the floor.

1. congrats on your k...
strangely enough, i find the bush family a bore. i read 'fortunate son' by hatfield, and it came across again and again - the fix was in, and the bushes overcame absolutely nothing, hell getting into airforce was a piece o cake to both junyer and senyer, becoming wealthy was as hard as losing a million.... the pigmedia guarded their backs every inch of the way. iow it was as dramatic as a barbara bush t party. still, thanks for the heads up; if kelly's book shows up in 3rd hand bookshop, i'll buy on your recommend! :)

And I've got one more book for your "must read" list...Bush On The Couch.

It's fascinating and terrifying. If you liked Kitty Kelly's book, do yourself a favor and get this one IMMEDIATELY.

Book Description

A renowned Washington, DC-based psychoanalyst examines George W. Bush's public persona-and asks serious questions about whether he is fit for the office he holds.

In Bush On the Couch, Dr. Justin Frank, a renowned Washington, DC-based psychoanalyst, assembles a comprehensive psychological profile of President George W. Bush. Using the principles of Applied Psychoanalysis, the discipline of psychoanalysing public and historical figure pioneered by Freud, Frank fearlessly builds his case, which concludes with a most disturbing diagnosis. With an eye for the subtleties of human behaviour sharpened through thirty years of clinical practice, Dr. Frank traces the development of Bush's character from childhood to present day, identifying and analysing Bush's patterns of thought, behaviour and communication. A thorough and authoritative examination of Bush's public appearances and speeches, along with historical, biographical, and journalistic records, Bush On the Couch is a compelling portrait of George W. Bush, filled with controversial and disturbing revelations about our nation's leader:

. the scion of a powerful family that failed to nurture its first-born son even as it instilled within him a false sense of omnipotence
. an individual in the grip of anxieties that require a monumental effort to manage
. an untreated alcoholic supported by a nation of enablers
. a rigid thinker with a perilously simplistic worldview
. and a megalomaniacal leader driven to invent adversaries so he can destroy them

Insightful and accessible, courageous and controversial, Bush On the Couch sheds startling new light on the Bush psyche and its impact on the way he governs, tackling head-on the question no one seems willing to ask: Is the president psychologically fit to run the country?

4. "an individual in the grip of anxieties that require a monumental effort"
" to manage"

This reminded me about a comment that one of the family members made when * was debating Anne Richards. Anne Richards was apparently trying everything she could to get his goat. * stood there without reaction. One of the family members is reported to have written a telegram to Babs asking, "What do you have him on ... animal tranquilizers?
