2. I don't know what it says about us as humans....

....that seeing the faces with the names makes it seem more real. On the one hand, the fact of their deaths alone should be enough. On the other, it's so vulnerably human, the way that seeing a fellow human being in a tragic situation brings out our humanity and compassion and sorrow so powerfully.

Just knowing the mere fact that a person died should make us sad, certainly just knowing the person's name should make us sad, but somehow, seeing the faces... it makes it easier to imagine their lives, what they were like, who were the families and the friends they left behind. Those are real people, every bit as real as you and me and those we love. And their lives were cut short by the bad decisions of those who had the unearned control of their destinies.

I could literally spend hours looking at each picture, thinking "Oh, how I wish you were still with us." Some of the smiles appeal to me particularly strongly because they remind me of people I'm fond of... but each and every one was a person that many people were deeply and particularly fond of. And now they're gone.

They are gone. DEAD.

It's just so horrible.
