something to warm the heart
Do Animals appreciate rescue?
This is from the SF Chronicle 12/15/2005

A female humpback whale became entangled in a web of crab traps & fishing
lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds and had to struggle to
stay afloat. She had hundreds of yards of rope wrapped around her body -
her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralon Islands & radioed an
environmental group for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so
bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her - a very
dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could accidentally kill a
rescuer. They worked for hours with knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous
circles, She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and
nudged them, pushed them gently around - she thanked them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The diver who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him
the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May we all be so blessed in the New Year - to be untangled from the things
that are binding us.

1. My new husband and I are going to swim with dolphins
when we take our official honeymoon in April.

Thank you for posting this story. I'll think of it when I'm cavorting with the smaller sea mammals.

17. Congrats!
A little story....

We were swimming in the Gulf once, and this huge dark shadow in the water approached us, brushing up against a lady who was pregnant. Scared the crap out of us. The mother-to-be says it happens all the time when she's pregnant. It was a Manatee. She said it was true with dolphins.

27. Interesting
Why did they do that? I remember one time being at a beach in Texas and a dolphin was swimming close by. It was so neat being that close to one of my favorite animals.

38. I'm going with my wife next week to do that in Costa Rica.
They say that whales are often in the same area. It's done in the wild, so it could be...wild.

14. Animals sure do appreciate rescue
10 years ago, I lost my cat Bonaparte to FIP. Shortly thereafter, I adopted my Maine Coon, but he couldn't live without a feline companion. So 9 years ago, I went to the shelter to adopt a cat. I spotted this calico youth who was rescued from the rubble of a tornado, found lying next to her dead mother.

Tweety sure did appreciate being rescued and adopted. For 5 years, she would not get off my lap unless I threw her off.

18. Wow that made my whole week
Thank you. I haven't seen anything as heartwarming since the photograph of the dogs in the airplane being flown out of New Orelans after Katrina. Maybe humans should turn the entire planet over to the animals - they might unfuck some of the damage we've done.

35. This is such a good story to post after that publicizing of london's whale
People seem to forget how many animals are saved each day as opposed to the one politicized or popular animal passing away. Thank you for sharing this good message -- it's good to get me back on my feet after reading such negativity on these boards when I peek now and again...

It really puts things into perspective. In the end, the two most grateful ones are the homeless and the animals. Save pensions, save medical insurance, and people are just gonna find something else to complain about...but those who have nothing appreciate everything they can get, and I'm glad there are those who still exist who do such good.

40. Wonderful story. It doesn't work for cats though
I once rescued a cat from a roof and it was horrible. I had to hold onto the ladder with one hand while holding a cat in the other hand who vigoriously attacked me ;)
