'Have you no sense of decency, sir?'

It is to our deep national shame—and ultimately it will be to the President’s deep personal regret—that he has followed his Secretary of Defense down the path of trying to tie those loyal Americans who disagree with his policies—or even question their effectiveness or execution—to the Nazis of the past, and the al Qaeda of the present.

Today, in the same subtle terms in which Mr. Bush and his colleagues muddied the clear line separating Iraq and 9/11 -- without ever actually saying so—the President quoted a purported Osama Bin Laden letter that spoke of launching, “a media campaign to create a wedge between the American people and their government.”

Make no mistake here—the intent of that is to get us to confuse the psychotic scheming of an international terrorist, with that familiar bogeyman of the right, the “media.”

The President and the Vice President and others have often attacked freedom of speech, and freedom of dissent, and freedom of the press.

Now, Mr. Bush has signaled that his unparalleled and unprincipled attack on reporting has a new and venomous side angle:

The attempt to link, by the simple expediency of one word—“media”—the honest, patriotic, and indeed vital questions and questioning from American reporters, with the evil of Al-Qaeda propaganda.

1. Watching him say it now thanks
Whatever the true nature of al Qaeda and other international terrorist threats, to ceaselessly compare them to the Nazi State of Germany serves only to embolden them.

More over, Mr. Bush, you are accomplishing in part what Osama Bin Laden and others seek—a fearful American populace, easily manipulated, and willing to throw away any measure of restraint, any loyalty to our own ideals and freedoms, for the comforting illusion of safety.

It thus becomes necessary to remind the President that his administration’s recent Nazi “kick” is an awful and cynical thing.

And it becomes necessary to reach back into our history, for yet another quote, from yet another time and to ask it of Mr. Bush:

“Have you no sense of decency, sir?”

I was impressed with what he had to say. I wish he'd gone on a bit longer, but at the same time...he was short, sweet, and as always, scathing.

Bravo, Keith...I'm liking you more every day. Now if you could just resist making jokes about fat people.....

He was talking about how nobody wants to see Rosie O'Donnell in the bath tub. And I assumed that was because of her size. That may have been a quick leap by me. There's plenty else that's unappealing about her........

43. I think he meant that in a general sense. Not because of her weight.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if he said that you wouldn't want to see HIM in the bathtub either. (That's what he thinks.)

Anyway, after hearing that comment she made about her kids asking when they would "grow fur," I'm thinking I don't want to be anywhere near Rosie, her kids or a bathtub. :scared: TMI, Rosie, TMI.

I, for example, happen to know *precisely* how unattractive I am in the bathtub and so should almost everyone else.

On edit: I don't mean everyone else should know how unattractive I am in the bathtub.

Has any member of the Bush clan ever apologized for the actions of Granpappy Prescott Bush? Or of Great Granpappy George Herbert Walker and his connection to Nazism?

If not, then it IS relevant.

More relevant even than how Joe Kennedy made HIS money - a topic that has always fascinated reich-wingers to no end.

At least our "diversion" would be rooted in reality. All Keith would have to say is: "Before the Republiscans deem themselves qualified to accuse others Nazi appeasement, they should re-read their history books--especially the chapter on the Bush family history." Investing money is the ULTIMATE form of appeasement!

Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 10:27 AM by TahitiNut
Godwin's Law -
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

Godwin's Law is predictive, not prescriptive. It's phenomenological, not statutory. It predicts that, in a political discussion (on Usenet), the probability of mentioning 'Nazi' or 'Hitler' approaches '1' as the length of the discussion approaches infinity.

In other words, it merely observes that someone in a discussion will eventually play the 'Nazi card.' It does not impose any 'win/lose' judgment whatsoever.

You've regurgitated a very common and WRONG characterization of Godwin's Law.

104. I stand corrected. However, maybe the prescriptive statement
also ought to be called a "law," since it seems to be true in fact in most cases. Once you've played the Hitler card (except in those very rare cases where somebody really is a Nazi), your argument on the merits is at risk of collapsing. But thanks for the clarification.

I appreciate Keith. But you don't beat these guys by reacting or addressing their accusations. Ignore their accusations because THEY ARENT FUCKING LISTENING TO REBUTTALS IN CASE ANYBODY HASN'T NOTICED. You beat them by accusing them, by playing their game and fighting fire with fire. You call THEM Nazis early and often, you call them appeasers - showing the Rumsfeld handshake with Sadddam, the Bush-Saudi Prince kiss and tiptoe thru the tulips.

Images. Symbols. Gestures. Truth. Not words. Actions.

Only, in this case - your accusations are correct- THEY ARE NAZIS - which they know, which is why they are using their powers of projection to smear us with what they are. Bush is a war hero, Kerry is the rich coward - remember?

To beat Rove you must become Rove, in a sense - which is what most of DU knows already so sorry for preaching to the choir. I appreciate Olbermann very much, but playing nice and addressing their accusations in a logical fahion has gotten us nowhere.

Olbermann makes us feel good because he is right and they are wrong. But it doesn't matter.

51. yeah right,
it boils down to the old 'ends justify the means' question.

I've decided that from what I've seen in various situations over my lifetime, that the ends never justify the means. I understand that you should use the strategy of the enemy against him, but there are ways to do it more honorably than merely copying his technique.

Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:12 PM by SlavesandBulldozers
we do both. we play the game to win then espouse our values, which are right in and of themselves.

They are fascists. You call them fascists because they are fascists. It's not that you're playing Rove's game, it's that Rove is playing your game already. He's ahead of you, accusing you of the accusations justified of him, and the only reason he calls you that is to disarm you of that accusation.

It's pre-emption, plain and simple - and as honorable Keith's intentions are by rehashing a statement that worked half a century ago - it won't work, because this is an entirely different game with entirely different stakes.

85. It would be difficult to
head off Rove's game directly because we are not criminal masterminds. Should we go around making false accusations? Why bother, since the truth is damning enough? I think mainly we have to not bite the bait and let them go ahead and try to whip up their base. We can't have much effect on their hardcore base. I don't think we lose much by not over-reacting to that pitch.

Keith's trying to speak truth within the acceptable media "game." He is very visible. We need that, while at the same time we do need other strategies as well. So what would you recommend?

49. Keith is speaking to those who can understand...
He deals in words. He's probably doing the best he can get away with on MSNBC. I don't think he was 'playing nice.' He's "rebutting" because that's the acceptable format. But this rebuttal was a platform for levelling some very accusatory remarks. Keith deserves commendation, ovations, roses.

OK but you can't ask Keith to become Rove. First of all, he's not that twisted. Our collective voices are the steamroller that will meet the Rovian steamroller.

Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:17 PM by SlavesandBulldozers
As Truman said, "Tell them the truth and they think it's hell".

Rove has to lie to smear. All we have to do is tell the truth. But you can't be put in a defensive posture by these assholes.

Democrats simply havent called it as they see it.

73. OK, then. We are not as far apart as I feared.
Make no mistake, Keith is telling them the truth. All he needs as ammunition against them is their own words.

Rove goes further. He twists and lies. Keith doesn't have to twist and lie. He simply shows them for what they are and lets them hang themselves with their own rope. That's the beauty of what he does.

I'm just for stating these things in less diplomatic terms. That is where the Rovian traits help, fuck diplomacy already. And decency? Surely he jests.

And certainly I see a problem with using old rhetoric to address a new problem. And I do understand that the whole "sense of decency" thing has its own historical efficacy, but in many ways Keith's approach is part and parcel to the problem. He's using old tactics in a new war. He's using armies standing in lines with red coats on against the vietcong, who play by no rules but their own.

86. Oh OK
exactly what I said above...I see you're on the same wave then.

Right, we don't need lies -- the truth about these govt hijackers is damaging enough. Dems and liberal spokespersons need to have the nerve to speak the truth now. You know, they really have no other alternative. People are tired and cynical. They want to see strength and resolve, and a will to overcome our adversaries within. Are Dems in congress going to let the mayor of Salt Lake City look like the only leader who really is in touch with the people?

No need to criticize Keith though. He's doing his part in a very repressive media environment. As far as strategy, there are going to have to be reinforcements on all fronts.

54. You're 100% right SlavesandBulldozers
We have so much ammunition to use on THEM. Why don't we use it?? THEY could label us, and we let THEM get away with it. When Hillary said that this White House is run like a plantation, why didn't the rest of the democrats back her and say, "YES!!...the stop lost program is slavery! When you pay people below a fair living wage, THAT'S slavery".

When Democrats are called fascist, that's when we should be explaining to America what fascism is! I know I had to look it up. ...Fascism defines our new America!!

Why aren't democrats talking about PNAC, RAD and all the profiteering this administration is making off of our backs?? Are our democratic leaders afraid to say anything because they don't want us looking into their stock portfolios? Or question their meetings with lobbyist?

I have always voted Democrat, but I'm sorry they're letting us down.

It's a shame that the most truthful news we get is through political satire.

Thanks Keith!! :patriot:

66. You're saying what many of us have been saying for a long time.
Only about 30% of our leaders have a fight in them.

It is clearly evident that some don't want to make waves. Inter-Congress diplomacy and nicey-nice is very important to them - while right wing leaders embarass them with their law insertions and voting tricks. But Dems take it in stride. They even break from Dem principles and vote with the Republicans (bankruptcy Patriot Act minimum age). We want to save our country and they perform as if it were the pre-assassination era.

You are right to question Dems.

82. What if he says no?
Here are a couple of thought questions that I have been wondering about:

What if when Joseph McCarthy was asked "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you no decency?" he had replied, "No" and kept on doing what he had been doing? What would the American people have done?

What if when the little boy said "but the emperor has no clothes!", about 30% of the grown-ups in the crowd and the emperor himself looked at him and said "So?" (or maybe "yes he does") and then went back to admiring the emperor's "new clothes"? What would the other grown-ups in the crowd do? What would the little boy do?

It seems like we are in this kind of situation now. President Bush is probably better at delivering assertions without comparing them to pesky reality than he is at anything else. I think this has given a lot of people pause just because of the bold faced way that he carries it off. We need a lot more responses like this to help people believe what they can see with their own eyes.

89. *** Un-American ***
Keith Olbermann:

The attempt to link, by the simple expediency of one word—“media”—the honest, patriotic, and indeed vital questions and questioning from American reporters, with the evil of Al-Qaeda propaganda.

That linkage is more than just indefensible. It is un-American.

As is stealing elections, terrorizing a nation into war, torturing detainees, and spying on Americans without a warrant.

Perhaps, now that their ox is being gored, the Euphemedia will finally submit to a Cranialrectoscopic procedure.

Impeachment is our ONLY moral, patriotic option.

after shrub said “In the 1920’s a failed Austrian painter published a book in which he explained his intention to build an Aryan super-state in Germany and take revenge on Europe and eradicate the Jews,” President Bush said today, “the world ignored Hitler’s words, and paid a terrible price.”

In the summer of 2001, the president was advised that Bin Laden was determined to strike within the U.S. The president ignored it and went on vacation.
