Bush admits CIA has secret prisons
Bush admits CIA has secret prisons

United States President George W Bush has acknowledged the CIA has run a secret overseas detention program for terrorism suspects.

He says 14 of those held have been transferred to the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

Human rights organisations have expressed concerns about the secret detention of terrorism suspects.

But Mr Bush has strongly defended the detention and questioning of terrorism suspects through this method, and says the CIA treats them humanely and does not use torture.

More at ABC News

Add that to the admitted torture discussed in this DU thread:

The officers told ABC News there was a list of six progressively harsher techniques that were authorized, with the prisoner always handcuffed.

The first -- the attention grab, involving the rough shaking of a prisoner.
Second -- the attention slap, an open-handed slap to the face.
Third -- belly slap, meant to cause temporary pain, but no internal injuries.
Fourth -- long-term standing and sleep deprivation, 40 hours at least, described as the most effective technique.
Fifth -- the cold room. Prisoners left naked in cells kept in the 50s and frequently doused with cold water.

The CIA sources say the sixth, and harshest, technique was called "water boarding," in which a prisoner's face was covered with cellophane, and water is poured over it (pictured above) -- meant to trigger an unbearable gag reflex.

New rules issued by the Pentagon today prohibit water boarding, though there was no clear acknowledgement that it was permitted previously.

And add it to *'s efforts to pass legislation that will insist that terrorism suspects cannot use Geneva Convention protections to file lawsuits against US personnel in US courts.

and it is obvious to anyone with morals and a love for this nation that this administration has been violating our laws, international laws and the laws of God (given he professes to be a Christian). He is just afraid that the "as you would have done unto to you" part will come back to bite him on the ass.

I despise what they have done in our name, what they have made our nation.

It's crystal clear that none of those CIA/military idiots have the slightest idea about what they are doing or why they are doing it.

6. Sure, they no longer hate us for our freedom
They now hate us because we are barbaric hate mongers that "shock and awe" sovereign nations that did not attack us or threaten to attack us; we hold political prisoners indefinitely and submit them to torture in illegal prisons; we have created a military conflict that has destroyed homes, villages and communities and has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, if not at our hands, at the hands of those who are there because we began the invasion (better to fight 'em over there than here) - we foster the hate and breed more terrorists who believe the words of their prophets and leaders - the west is evil - we have made it so easy to hate us.

8. Which is why we "outsource" them.
But you have to admit, it is rather sad that the Pentagon has to tell our soldiers that the behavior listed below will no longer be allowed:

The Pentagon today also listed numerous other interrogation methods that will be banned.

--Interrogators may not force a detainee to be naked, perform sexual acts or pose in a sexual manner.

--They cannot use hoods or place sacks over a detainee's head or use duct tape over his eyes.

--They cannot beat or electrically shock or burn him or inflict other forms of physical pain, any form of physical pain.

--They may not use hypothermia or treatment which will lead to heat injury.

--They may not perform mock executions.

--They may not deprive detainees of the necessary food, water and medical care.

--They may not use dogs in any aspect of interrogations. (Dogs can be used legally by our military police for security, but not as an adjunct part of the interrogation process.)

9. Here's what's mind-boggling --------
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 07:41 PM by sparosnare
Several months ago, when the Times revealed the prisons existed, the paper was accused of treason by Bushco for giving away information that would embolden the terrorists. They then continued to deny such prisons.

Yet today, Bush gives a major speech where he admits everything the Times reported as true (and boy is he proud of it!), THEN has the gall to tell Congress to make it legal.

If that isn't fucked up, I don't know what is.

14. This is why they have secret prisons/concentration camps:
The Bushes don't know which "terrorists" can be traced back to LIHOP/MIHOP and which cannot. So, before they can allow any of them to appear before any kind of legitimate court, or even before they can confirm their existence, the "terrorists" must be tortured or killed.

The only people who will ever emerge from Bush's concentration camps are those who definitely cannot be tied to the Bushes, to the CIA, to the Mossad, etc. That's the only thing that makes sense here.

If you don't believe it, ask yourself what they hell they're up to.

26. "We tortured an insane man"
"We tortured an insane man"
The author of "The One Percent Doctrine," Ron Suskind, talks about what the U.S. really got out of Abu Zubaydah and why waterboarding doesn't make America safer.
By Alex Koppelman

Sep. 07, 2006 | Harsh interrogation works -- that's the argument President Bush made on Wednesday even as he announced that al-Qaida operative Abu Zubaydah and 13 other alleged al-Qaida operatives will be transferred to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to face trial. Acknowledging for the first time the existence of secret CIA prisons where the 14 men had been held, Bush claimed that the extreme interrogation techniques used on Zubaydah, whom he called "a senior terrorist leader," and others in the "war on terror," were justified. Bush said that Zubaydah, under the pressure of what Bush referred to as the CIA's "alternative set of procedures," had given up information that proved vital to the United States.

But Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Suskind paints a more complicated picture of Zubaydah. In one of the most hotly discussed sections of his book "The One-Percent Doctrine," Suskind reveals that at least one top FBI analyst considered Zubaydah an "insane, certifiable, split personality" and that he was mainly responsible only for logistics like travel arrangements. According to Suskind's reporting, the interrogation methods used on Zubaydah -- waterboarding and sleep deprivation, among others -- only yielded information about plots that did not exist.

Salon spoke with Suskind about how the Bush administration has tended to oversell Zubaydah's significance and why sophisticated "soft" interrogation techniques have been the most effective.

What did you think of the president's speech?

Well, I don't think that the president contradicted anything that's in the book. I say in the book that we did get some things of value from Abu Zubaydah. We found out that "Muktar" -- the brain, that's what it means in Arabic -- was Khalid Sheik Mohammed. That was valuable for a short period of time for us. We were then able to go through the SIGINT , the electronic dispatches over the years, and say, "OK, that's who 'Muktar' is." Zubaydah, of course, is showing up on signal intelligence as Zubaydah.

31. Considering that warmongers seem to want to inflame the world,
we have to focus upon the values this country was founded upon, or risk losing them, or the world's belief that we should be taken seriously regarding democracy at any level.

Regarding negative behaviour: "Do a crime once, it is a crime; do a crime twice, it is not so much a crime." -trying to remember Confucious. The crap that's going on could get a lot worse. We have to pay attention to doing the right thing and not going apeshit.

That might be easier if you simply remember who profits from destruction and negativity: Bush. Don't add another smirk to that face, please.
