Dear Gov. Dean -- Urge a Boycott of SOTU
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 01:30 AM by understandinglife
As noted in the text of this letter, it was inspired by William River Pitts' post here at DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=204315&mesg_id=204315

I was contacted by more than one person expressing enthusiasm for the letter and urging me to post it as a separate thread. I also suggested that folk encourage Skinner to transform Will's idea into a "DU Activist" endeavor. I hope that happens.

I do know that others are calling their Senators and Reps urging that they exit the floor when Bush begins his SOTU and that they gather on the steps of the US Capitol and tell all Americans, and all humanity, the truth about what the Bush neoconster regime has done and make the commitment "NEVER AGAIN."

Here's my letter to Gov. Dean. As always, feel free to use all or any of it in your communications to others.

We have everything to lose if our representatives give witness to Bush's lies by their presence as he tells them, yet again, on 31 January 2006.

21 January 2006 (# 47)

William Rivers Pitt has posted what he calls a "crazy idea." He proposes that all Democratic Senators and Representatives walk out of the State of the Union (SOTU) address and hold their own SOTU on the steps of the US Capitol.

It is not a crazy idea.

It would be a clear message to our fellow citizens that a true opposition to the crimes of the Bush's administration and the complicity and corruption of the Republican Congress has formed, and will be unrelenting in upholding the law and protecting Americans from any further abuse.

Congressman Conyers, as you know, yesterday held a remarkable hearing on Bush's abuses of FISA, the National Security Act and the 4th Amendment of the United States -- in a basement room.

Senator Frist, for once, spoke the truth and declared that Alito is "the Democrats worst nightmare." He was gloating. In the face of a totally corrupt Executive and a relentlessly complicit Republican Congress, the Democrats are the butt of a chuckle from a guy who should already have been forced to resign. He chuckled as the Nation is now threatened with a life-term appointment of a person to the Supreme Court who has been more than eager to transform the Office of the President into the Throne of the King.

The scale and scope of lawlessness, avarice and disregard for humanity that characterizes Bush's neoconster regime and the 108th and 109th US Congress are historical facts. To sit in the people's house and give witness to a President who has admitted breaking the law and brazenly declared he'll continue breaking is simply not acceptable.

If you want to see the Democratic Party be the force that repels the nearly complete destruction of the Republic and the nearly complete transformation of America into a lawless totalitarian state, then the way to announce that to all our fellow Americans is to Boycott SOTU.

And, during the broadcast of the boycott, deliver the message that business as usual is over until Bush, Cheney, Rove, DeLay, Frist and many others are brought to justice. Make it clear to every American and to the whole world, that an opposition party has emerged and it will not stop until those who have done so much damage to our society and humanity are held accountable.

Please use your considerable influence to convince our fellow citizens to call upon their representatives in the Senate and the House and urge them to Boycott SOTU.

Thank you for your continued leadership,

Peace.

10. If they are present, no matter what they do, they are validating ...
... his lies. If they stand and depart when he begins to speak they are sending the message that an avowed criminal, who claims he's going to continue committing crimes against his Nation, will not be tolerated.

If the Dems have the strength of character to take that action, they will indicate that the law is above politics.

As to November, best to approach through actions, not words.

Peace.

You've been far more prolific than I. LOL

Really impressive. Have you ever received direct, as opposed to auto generated responses? Those, "thank you for sharing your thoughts. Though we appreciate your concerns and opinions we receive so much mail, it is impossible for us to respond to each individually. . . " blah blah blah blah blah . . .letters disuaded me from sending any more after having done so for many years.

Now I'm far more likely to send to journalists and academics than politicians. My two Senators even sent me snail mail that had absolutely nothing to do with my inquiry. That didn't exactly make me too terribly thrilled.

A walk out of the SOTU would be a wondrous watershed event. It is totally warranted. IMHO

They could even hold a constitutional convention on the steps of the Capital with every single smeared whistleblower, disgruntled former government and military and intelligence agent and employee,

Yes. A substantive event, numerous folk speaking the truth to the lies being told inside the people's house by Bush.

As to response -- have never received even a form letter and, actually, that's way ok by me. I'd rather they read the letters and do stuff, than take time to respond. Some day, it might be cool to get a postcard from Gov. Dean -- maybe with a photo of all our reps gathered after they walked out of SOTU!! -- and a simple "thank you."

Peace!

3. I respect your right to disagree. At the same time, I see nothing ...
... to be gained by giving witness and legitimacy to a person who has never been elected President of the United States of America, and who has committed grievous crimes against our fellow citizens and humanity.

I appreciate your kind words regarding my writing efforts. Thank you.

4. The fact is I'm not sure Dean will--what does that say about the party?
I'm not just talking about Dean in particular. I'm talking about all the Dems in Congress. So many of them hold views that conflict with the views of other Dems, and several of them have done things against the interests of working Americans. It's hard to tell if the party wants to move anywhere but sideways with the Republicans. I'm a registered Dem, but I dunno what's the message anymore.

I know where I stand on the issues, but it's hard to tell what leaders several thousand miles away are thinking sometimes. I think the biggest handicap everybody is facing today is the corporate news media. That, above all else, is a danger that nobody talks about. I doubt even an FDR New Deal-type Democrat could win an election today with a hostile corporate news media.

6. There should be a statement by the Dems
but walking out does seem to be rude to me. What if the Dems decided not to show up at all? Or as someone suggested upwards, just to stay seated so as not to recognize Bush.

9. I agree with you. An organized walkout would be a thing of beauty
The State of the Union Address is supposed to be about a bipartisan coming together to address the problems of the nation.

This administration has been anything but bipartisan. If Bush says anything about "responsible dissent", "bipartisan cooperation" or anything else which smacks of rank hypocracy, the Democrats should just quietly get up, walk out and present their rebuttle in some appropriately dramatic patriotic place--personally, I'd opt for the Lincoln Memorial.

They should do everything in the most dignified manner, of course.

The Republicans would howl, their media toadies would scream but the look on The Littlest Emperor's face as the Democrats follow Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi out the door would be on the front page of every newspaper in the country.

It's probably not going to happen but a girl can dream, can't she.

as much as the Democrats hate GWB... they attended the State of the Union Address for eight years, and you suggest that the Dems just walk out??? Actions like a boycott or walk-out will ensure that the Democratic Party remains the Minority Party.

13. Clinton worked with Republicans
Building a bipartisan consensus was a major part of Clinton's playbook. Bush and the Republicans in Congress have used naive Democrats where necessary and closed them out of any real input.

There's no comparison.

17. I am opposed to a boycott but in favor of a walkout. The Dems
timidity is what has made them a minority party. No one wants to support people who won't fight for what's right.

The Republican's have been accepting money from organized crime.

Do you counsel the Democrats to do like wise because the Republican did?

A boycott would be a disaster for the Dems, but a walkout, at the first lie, would be the beginning of a rejuvenation of the Democratic Party that would have very beneficial long term effects.

It would signal the end of acceptance of lies, corruption, and crime.

23. Actually, I've adjusted the letter I'm sending to Gov Dean to state ...
... that all the Dems should be in the "people's house" until Bush enters and as he is entering they begin leaving. He's already a criminal and has vowed to continue violating the people's rights. So, by the time he opens his mouth, the Dems would have left the room demonstrating an unwillingness to give witness, in the "people's house," to a criminal, irrespective of what he has to say.

Thank you for your comments.

24. I just had a thought. How about a walkout with the exception
of a handful of Dems?

Have Kerry, Hillery, Kennedy, of the Senate, and Murtha, Conyers, and Pelousi walk behind the exiting group, then return to their seats. Later they can say they agreed to stay just to keep an eye on bush, because they can't trust him.

This would drive the right absolutly crazy.

Yeah, it's a fantasy but a guy can dream.

26. That is an elegant idea. PM Will Pitt with it and, if you have time, ...
... write each of the six you mentioned and not only urge the walk-out but that, as leaders, they should consider your suggestion.

Everything should be done to laser focus on the fact that Bush is a self-admitted criminal who has proclaimed to continue his lawless ways -- having a few return to their seats while their colleagues are explaining that Bush had to be monitored by the leadership would amp the power of the laser considerably!!

12. The real question is would they cut away from the SOTU to cover it?
Would the CM actually cut away to the steps? Would they show the walkout? Would they show the empty seats?

Trees falling and all that. Still, it should be done.

18. No, they wouldn't cut away to cover it, but they would show it as
it happened.

Then they would interview afterwards as to why.

The Dems could get lots of camera coverage of a "Peole's State of the Union and release footage for a week or two that would be shown after the fact.

If the Repos charge disrespect of the office, The Dems would say lying us into war, corruption, and criminal behavior by the current occupant is the height of disrespect of the office.
