Are you tempted to take a week-long nap?
I am. if I could, I'd do a mini-Ichabod Crane and fall asleep until all of the 9-11 Fifth Anniversdary Spectacular hubub is over and done with.

9-11 was horrible. Okay. I'll acknowledge that. Terrorism is an ongoing problem we have to deal with. I'll buy that.....Now, can we get back to life in 2006?

I agree we should not bury our head in the sand. But I don't need to be "reminded" of the danger.

And I did my own wallowing and mourning in the weeks after 9-11. I don't WANT to reexperience 9-11 or those awful couple of years of its' aftermath.

We've already been through four 9-11 anniversaries. It's unfortunate that we tend to see anniversaries of fives as important, especially since this one has to coincide with the Fearathon being waged by the GOP in an attempt to salvage the 2006 elections.

So we'll see GW trying to rouse and "inspire" the nation in an attempt to regain his lost luster. We'll see endless mindless post-mortems by the pundits, and idiotic and dishonest miniseries and shallow pseudo-documentaries that will just rehash everything we already know.

We'll be innundated with bathos to make us remember the victims (as if we've forgotten them) and put law-and-order officials back on the post-9-11 pedestal.

Got any Sleep-Eze anyone? About a week's worth?

3. What blm said
I could take a nap that long...cause the aftermath of "September" will be with us for a long, long time. Bush did that much damage.

a GREAT song that actually helps young people to put Sept 11 in perspective and to realize how Bush has used it for political exploitation.

2. Just don't watch TV for a week.
Nothing they show will be anything they won't re-run a million times in the following six months, and most of it will be available on DVD in short order.

6. I might take the pledge to do that...
Problem is that I'm a news junkie. Ohhhhhh, that'll be hard.

10. Get your news from an over-seas source on the internet instead.
Then, you'll get your fix and some extra perspective.

12. I've been doing that for years

Used shortwave before the Internet.

But I also like junk food, so I have the unfortunate habit of watching junk journalism (all of cable news) too.

7. I'm planning on watching (again) all fifteen episodes of
the BBC "Sharpe" series -- I'll even watch the extras on the DVD's. 30-plus hours of nothing to do with the modern world should get me through most of the week.

I may try subtitles this time around, since the Yorkshire accent gets a bit thick, though I suspect once I've watched them all I'll be able to understand how you can get an "O" and an "H" into the word "bugger"! Not knocking the accent, btw, just my failure to grasp the nuances . . .

:-)

9. Maybe I'll rent I Claudius
and have a marathon of the decadence and corruption of ancient Rome.

But then again, maybe there are too many parallels. John Hurt as GW.

16. How about renting a few Oscar Wilde favs?
They've got a little bit of everything EXCEPT nasty politics. I agree that I, Claudius may be a bit close to reality -- which is a truly horrific commentary on the state of our nation.

Personally, at this point I'm for anything that ups the titillation factor and downplays the facts!

Alternately, there is always premier league football, which requires beer (a good sign) and provides ample opportunity to use words that I normally would not use in public (as a relatively well-bred female of "a certain age") -- particularly directed at a certain manager who can't seem to get his team on the winning side of the board . . . sigh

You must seek distractions best you can, and turn off the "news."

18. Maybe a Honeymooners marathon
Lose myself in Ralph Cramden for a week.

That and non-stop drinking (even though I don't usually drink much) could make for drowsy weeklong cocoon.

11. I watch the news for a living.
I am dreading Monday, as I have to monitor all the pablum I'll have to dictate. My only relief is a recording of the Howard Stern show during the 9-11 attacks, which will probably be the most sincere thing I hear all day.

14. You have my sympathy
..Although, despite my better judgement I must admit I'll probably have it on in the background on Monday too out of morbid curiousity.

Maybe you can handle it by pretending they're dictating a bad novel or something.

19. It's pretty bad out there and will probably get worse...if anyone could
have imagined that Bush's poll numbers would be in the crapper and the media would still be tring to fish him out. As much as us Media Junkies knew the MSM was controlled I wonder how many of us had an idea that it was as massive as we are seeing.

I've got some old BBC Mini-series VHS's I'll dust off and see if they aren't too sentimental to bury myself in for a few days.

Somehow I think the Bushies will pull more stunts that will drag us all back to the tube, though.

"I still hear you and the world still hears you..."

or something like that.
