IDIOCRACY....Curt Weldon's latest bright idea
From Political Animal:

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2006_09/009464.php

The second-ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, who is a strong supporter of the U.S. military mission in Iraq, has drafted a resolution that would give military commanders — instead of President Bush or Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld — decision-making authority over when American troops should return home....Weldon is one of the foremost Republican military experts in the House.

....Weldon initially contemplated introducing his proposal as regular legislation, but opted instead for a sense of the House resolution after learning that legislation would conflict with the president’s constitutional war powers.

Let me get this straight. Weldon is one of the "foremost Republican military experts in the House," but he didn't realize that stripping the president of the authority to determine troop dispositions would be a plainly unconsitutional infringement of his commander-in-chief powers? Apparently the Republican Party really is a living, breathing example of the fictional world of Idiocracy. How else could a guy like Weldon rise to the top of the heap?

1. Does he not understand what "Commander in Chief" means?
or is this an admission that W and Rummy can't be trusted?

2. A combination, clearly.
This being an election year when Bush's Iraq policies are hurting Republicans...

3. Weldon is having a "Dark Night of the (Republican) Soul"
He's one of the politicians from my area (Philly), so I try to keep up with him. He's having serious qualms about the direction in which his party has gone.

Not that I'm feeling sorry for him. When you lie down with dogs, you have to expect to get up with fleas. I look at it as a signal that the Republican Party and the Conservative movement are starting to crack up and break down. Weldon, clearly, is beside himself over this recreational war.

Such head-scratchingly weird behavior will only become more common.

4. Bush doesn't believe in upholding the Constitution, but I do. The Pres is
Commander in Chief. Our trouble right this minute is that Congress is not doing their oversight responsibilities to the Pres - and naturally he has run amok.

The answer is to remove the current Congress. The answer is NOT letting a bunch of brass take over. When armies rule - we're in for big trouble that would make us long for the good ol' Bush days - and that says a lot.
