The guy is facing some pretty serious charges (as he should), but he still is entitled to legal representation.

My mother, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and several good friends are/were lawyers.
My father worked in local government for decades prosecuting criminals.
My mother worked for local government for decades as well.
My grandfather worked for 60 years to clear the name of Husband Kimmell, who was unjustly scapegoated for Pearl Harbor.
My great-grandfather was chief justice of the Massachusetts state supreme court.
So there are a few lawyers who have dedicated a portion, if not all, of their careers to serving the public good.
As far as the defense attorneys arguing vociferously for their clients, I say thank God. It's an adversarial system, and the more guys out there beating the crap out of the prosecution lessens the likelihood of innocent people going to jail. It ain't perfect, but it's the best system 30,000 years of societal development has come up with.
Everyone hates lawyers...until they need one.

One quibble though. You say there a few lawyers who have dedicated a portion, if not all, of their caeers to serving the public good. I think there have been many. And they are usually the ones that you never see on Rita Cosby, that's for certain.

I have two lawyers in my family; one is a decent-enough guy and the other is a waste of air (Guess which one sued me, and which one defended).

14. Umm, did you know you are not above the law? |
|
You can get arrested. There is nothing about being a corrections officer that makes you immune.
If you believe it is because you would not commit a crime, did you know it is possible to be accused of a crime you didn't do?
Would you prefer a police state? You get to arrest 'em and lock 'em up and no one able to question it?

20. So you hate the founding fathers? |
|
The majority of the founding fathers were lawyers, you know. That would be why we "are a nation of laws, not men."
The Constitution and the Bill of Rights are at their core, legal documents. Those legal documents guarantee that each and every one of us has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The right to be represented at trial, to be tried by a jury of our peers, to be safe from government intrusion into our homes without probable cause in the form of a warrant from an impartial judge. And many other rights, including the right to be considered innocent in the eyes of the law until proven guilty in a court of law. These are fundamental to our freedom and our liberty.
Sure, the guy was caught on tape kicking and beating someone without provocation. But in America, his right to be represented by an attorney is inviolable. Sure the guy's an asshole. But in protecting HIS rights, we protect our own.
