We need to keep China from getting to the moon. If China ever establishes a moon base, if we haven't destroyed ourselves already, they will rain moon rocks on us and use russian oil to invade our destroyed cities, then we all start speaking Chinese. The Dark Future is now and so much of what was sci-fi for the past 100 years has become reality that I don't think this is as far fetched as one might think at first glance.

It sounds paranoid, but look around you. They would never be able to make a beach head today, but they are a patient people and they think generationally (unlike we here in the US who barely think past tomorrow). Our shortsightedness is going to be our undoing and they will pounce on us as soon as 1) our economy collapses 2) we descend into true revolution 3) They establish a militarized moon base.

They don't want to do it tomorrow, they will wait decades to do it if they have to, but they are preparing for it today (check out Rummy's trip to China late last year, it wasn't a social visit, we don't send the secretary of defense to drink tea and eat dim sum).

Our flag is there, we got there first, and, laugh if you like, but in 100 years when WWV or WWVI is being fought and there are populated colonies up there it will be an instrumental weapon. A piece of moon rock weighing no more than a semi-truck can be catapulted at earth with relatively no energy (compared to earthside launch). It will escape and just fall, faster and faster, until it can obliterate a good portion of a city. All you need is an electromagnetic propulsion system a little more powerful than a roller-coaster launcher and BLAM! (this is sci-fi only in application, all of the technology exists today to make this weapon, all you need to do is get it to the moon)

Again, the Chinese think generationally and we can't see past the end of our own noses half the time. They will bide their time, especially if we ignore them or think they are our friends, and then one day we will say "WTF! I never thought of dropping Moon rocks on LA, San Francisco, and Seattle to pave way for an invasion. I wish we had stopped them before they started."

Should we stop their space program, no. Should we prevent them from going to the moon, no. Should we get back up there first and establish both research and militarized outposts, absolutely. We don't have to be the aggressors, we just need to build our own defenses against the most powerful non-nuclear weapon known to man.

You can laugh if you want, it won't happen tomorrow or even (probably) in my life time. But mark my words, we need to have this type of thing online as a deterrent long before anyone else does.
