Voinvich Accepts Dems Apology For Tying Him to Noe
Can someone explain why Reid felt the need to apologize to these crooks? Voinovich IS linked to Noe. Do the R's have something on Reid that makes him keep pulling his punches?

Voinovich accepts apology for attempt to tie him to Noe

Sen. George V. Voinovich was not very happy the other day when the Ohio Republican discovered that Senate Democrats had tried to link him to the Thomas W. Noe coin scandal. But Voinovich apparently was not the only GOP senator irritated with a press release issued by the office of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Reid’s office sent out a 27-page statement that charged more than 30 Republican senators with ethics violations or controversial statements.

It said that in 2003 and 2004, Voinovich accepted $21,000 in contributions from Noe and his wife. What irked Voinovich is that Noe and his wife gave $21,000 to Voinovich and a number of other Republicans in Congress, not just to Voinovich. Voinovich has returned his share of the Noe contributions.

Reid on Thursday wrote a letter of apology to Senate Republicans, saying the statement "went too far." Voinovich spoke with Reid on Friday and thanked him for the apology.

Marcie Ridgway, a Voinovich spokeswoman, said the senator "was pleased he received the letter of apology, but believes we need to be spending time on the people’s business."

1. It's the "I'm guilty but don't say I'm guilty" outrage
It's OK to be guilty - just don't broadcast it. It's the broadcasting it that makes the thugs mad.

2. Don't worry. This is all part of Reid's subtle plan to get news coverage..
... by caving in to -- no, wait.

By playing into Dem steroetyp -- no, hold it a sec.

By making sure the story is about Dem weakness instead of repuke crimes -- ah, heck.

I can't figure out why the hell he apologized either. Though the desperate rationalizations I've seen on DU do make for fascinating reading.

3. maybe...... reid went to far. ya think
i dont know, but seems like this gives reid more credibility if he did go to far to admit it. odd that i am, i like to see honesty, and integrity in the leaders that represent us. we have seen little to none from republicans. i will sit back and listen to what is up, and how this evolves to better understand. but to this point reid is doing a kick ass job. i am going ot trust there is a reason for him having expressed he went to far.

not a big deal. and not going ot make it one

he also said he wouldnt do what repugs demanded, fire someone?

6. How is it
that pointing out a Republican's connections to unethical and possibly illegal activities is a bad thing?

How is it that apologizing for saying so is a good thing?

Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 12:55 PM by seabeyond
reid is saying he went too far. i will have to hear why he thinks he went to far, or read up more on the event to answer. do you know he didnt go too far?

if he did go to far, then it is socially and morally and ethically to state so. it is the mature adultlike thing to do

but i dont have the information. i have been busy and havent done the research. if it is even out there yet.

8. You're not a lone in that
My grandmother on my dad's side is like that too. She doesn't like dishonest people and integrity. She used to support Bush but around Thanksgiving confessed she was no longer believing him or whether or not he was really a faithful person.

5. He's one of the most corrupt politicians
in Ohio history, and that's saying a lot. The news media has always, always covered up for him whether it was the corruption of his brother or of Paul Mifsud. Now we have his connections to Noe and we have Dems apologizing for bringing it up?

Maybe V sold his soul to the Devil or something...

9. Well thank goodness a democrat didn't let something stand!
I mean, what would we do if our leaders actually made statments and then stood by them? Where would we be then?

Voinovich avoids political fallout of Ohio scandals
BWC troubles disappoint senator

WASHINGTON - ...

While numerous confidants and appointees have found themselves on a crash course with investigators, government watchdogs, and political opponents, Mr. Voinovich has emerged unscathed.

"He's Mr. Teflon; he is able to sneak out of this stuff and nothing sticks," said Sandy Buchanan, executive director of Ohio Citizen Action, which has clashed over the last two decades with the two-term senator...

The Noe connection

During the mid-1990s, Mr. Voinovich's chief of staff, Paul Mifsud, recruited Terrence Gasper as the bureau's chief financial officer. The two pushed for a change in state law that widened the workers' compensation bureau's investment authority to include such things as rare coins.

In 1998, the final year of Mr. Voinovich's tenure as governor, the bureau made a pact to invest with a rare-coin dealer - Tom Noe, a Toledo-area Republican campaign contributor. By then, Mr. Voinovich already had appointed Mr. Noe to the Bowling Green State University Board of Trustees and the Ohio Board of Regents...

13. Voino created Coingate
by appointing Tom Noe and by allowing Ohio BWC to invest in Noe's coin schemes.

Like most of the GOP corruption in Ohio, it started under Voinovich and Taft inherited it and kept it going. Not to diminish Taft's corruption, but Voinovich is the grand master behind all of it.
