GEE! I just got another communication from Saxby Chambliss!
I received a phone call from his office 2 days ago regarding my request that he vote against Alito! This morning, I receive an email response to my complaint about wire taping.

Here's a copy of his response, and my response back to him!

I'm still not sure why he's all of a sudden responding to me????

Thank you for contacting me regarding the National Security
Agency's (NSA) monitoring of conversations connected to terrorist activity.
I appreciate hearing from you.

The President has publicly discussed certain activities of the NSA
that he authorized in the weeks following the September 11, 2001 terrorist
attacks on our nation. As described by the President, the NSA intercepts
certain international communications into and out of the United States of
persons linked to terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda and its affiliated
groups. The President has said that the purpose of the Presidential directive
is to prevent another catastrophic attack on our country.

As the 9/11 Commission pointed out, two of the terrorist hijackers
who attacked the Pentagon, Nawaf al Hamzi and Khalid al Mihdhar, were
communicating with other members of al Qaeda overseas while they were in
the United States preparing for their deadly attack. Regrettably, we did not
know this until it was too late. The President's actions attempt to address
weaknesses in our early warning system, making it more likely that
terrorists, like the 9/11 hijackers, will be identified and located in time to
prevent another disaster.

As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I am
aware that Administration briefings of this type are limited to a very few,
and that Congressional leaders from both parties were briefed on several
occasions.

The world changed on September 11, 2001, demonstrating that it is
vitally important that the President of the United States must have the power
and authority to act on information to protect the American people from
future acts of terrorism by al-Qaeda and terrorists who target the United
States.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. As always, I
appreciate hearing from you. In the meantime, if you would like to receive
timely e-mail alerts regarding the latest congressional actions and my
weekly e-newsletter, please sign up via my web site at:
www.chambliss.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

Saxby Chambliss
United States Senate

(My response)

Senator Chambliss, I appreciate the response to my email, but you are continuing to simply restate the Republican talking points about the President must be able to authorize wire taps, and the world changing after 9/11. That simply tells me that YOU aren't thinking for yourself, and representing US as your constituents.

The President DOES have the ability to authorize wire taps already! But he is required to obtain a warrant through FISA. why does he have a problem with complying with the LAW? Don't tell me that it takes too long! There is a 72 hour window that he can use AFTER he's already begun the tap!

IF, and it's a big if, the President feels the current law is too restrictive, then he should have gone to Congress and asked that it be changed!

Just because someone doesn't like, or agree with a law doesn't permit him to ignore it! And YES, that applies to the President too!

Sincerely,

2. Good Letter. A further suggestion came to mind.
I liked the suggestion of a poster some time back. Include in your letter, a xeroxed copy of a $100.00 bill and tell him that is your contribution to the State Democratic party (or his opponent, or another progressive organization working to defeat him) in light of his BS response.

3. That won't work with him. He's not up for election till 09!
Besides, where am I going to get a $100 bill to copy?

I just find it very strange that I got 2 responses from his office in the last 2 days! I've been writing to him for over a year, and I NEVER hear anything! He obviously knows I'm a Dem, so why am I all of a sudden important enough that he's paying attention???
