Happy Patriot Day!
In honor of Patriot Day, some thoughts.

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive – C.S. Lewis

This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears he is a protector – Plato

If Tyranny and Opression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. – James Madison

When the tyrant has disposed of foreign enemies by conquest or treaty and there is nothing left to fear from them, then he is always stirring up some war or other, in order that the people may require a leader. – Plato

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God. – Thomas Jefferson

There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetuated under the shield of law and in the name of justice. – Charles de Montesquieu

Necessity, the tyrant’s plea. – John Milton

The only tyrant I accept in this world is the “still small voice” within me. – Mahatma Gandhi

Slaves would be tyrants were the chance theirs. – Victor Hugo

Find out just what the people will submit to and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress. - Frederick Douglass

The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well meaning but without understanding. - Justice Louis D. Brandeis

Under conditions of tyranny it is far easier to act than to think. – Hannah Arendt

Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem to lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. – Thomas Payne

I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. – Thomas Jefferson
